Inhalt: "New instruments of promotion policy enforce scientific and equality policy requirements on to the training of postdoc researchers in the universities, with the intention of reducing the wellknown difficulties of women in this phase. The paper presents a case-study, which analyses the measures to promote women within the junior researcher program of a natural sciences cluster, founded in the German Excellence Initiative. It is shown that these measures sometimes lead toparadoxical consequences for the careers of the women enrolled, due to the constantly changing interplay between the logics of science and equality, and the organizational structures."
Titelübersetzung:Marie Curie and her laboratory : promoting women's right to science?
Autor/in:
Hat Marie Curie also Frauenförderung 'avant la lettre' betrieben?" (Textauszug)
Inhalt: "During the last twenty years gender studies of science have shown that science in its social aspects is marked by gender-based exclusions. Regarding the laboratory built up and directed by Marie Curie between 1906 and 1934, it is astonishing to find a remarkable number of mainly foreign female scientists. The author outlines how Curie used the university system to expand her staff and discusses her possibilities to promote women against the background of the educational system in France. Curie's staffing policy is related to her experiences during her scientific education, her teaching at the 'Ecole normale de jeunes filles' in Sèvres, her marriage to Pierre Curie and her relation to her daughter Irène Curie." The assessing women in engineering project : a model for sustainable and profitable collaboration
Autor/in:
Marra, Rose M.; Bogue, Barbara
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 10 (2004) No. 3, S. 283-296
Inhalt: "Women in engineering (WIE) programs work to recruit and retain women in undergraduate engineering programs and are a crucial part of the nation's effort to attract more women into engineering professions. For WIE programs to be maximally effective, they must have access to validated assessment instruments for measuring the effectiveness of their recruitment and retention activities. The Assessing Women in Engineering (AWE) project, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, aims to develop such instruments. This article describes the AWE project's unique collaboration between a WIE director and an assessment professional to develop exportable assessment instruments and models for WIE programs nationwide, thus allowing them to assess their programs' activities and ultimately provide data for making well-informed evaluation decisions." Recruiting female faculty members in science and engineering : preliminary evaluation of one intervention model

Stewart, Abigail J.; LaVaque-Manty, Danielle; Malley, Janet E.
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 10 (2004) No. 4, S. 361-375
Inhalt: "The representation of female faculty members in science and engineering fields lags behind that of their counterparts in the social sciences and humanities and also fails to keep pace with the production of female science and engineering doctorates. Research has shown that equity cannot be achieved by waiting for women to fill the applicant pool; instead, institutions must intervene by changing hiring practices and retention policies. This article describes and evaluates early results of one intervention at the University of Michigan: the creation of a faculty committee designed to improve the recruitment and hiring of female faculty members through peer education. One hiring cycle after the committee's creation, the authors found (a) reports of changed practices in some search committees and departments, (b) an increase in the number and proportion of new hires who were women, and (c) a substantial increase in the knowledge and motivation of the members of the recruitment committee with respect to improving the climate for female faculty members."
