(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The engineering profession in Germany developed a male dominated faculty monoculture. In particular women succeed slowly being effective and sustainable in this field. A lot of diverse programs try to change this situation. Their success is based on demographical change, talent shortage and the concept of Diversity Management. These economical motivated factors force the needs of the cultural opening and a change in engineering." (author's abstract)

Doing gender/ doing profession in Finnish working life
Titelübersetzung:Doing gender/ doing profession im finnischen Arbeitsleben
Autor/in:
Roininen, Ella
Quelle: St. Gallen, 2008. VIII, 284 S.
Inhalt: "Societal inequalities are by and large based on economic inequalities. Economic inequalities are based on ordering people in hierarchies, where some categories of people have easier access to the world's economic and other resources, and others are restricted in this access. The gender system, including the gendered organisation of work, is one foundation for such inequalities and touches all of our lives. This study contributes to the feminist understanding of gender's operation in society by examining how gender differences are created in Finnish working life. Employment markets in Finland are persistently gendered: the public sector work of care and education is numerically over-dominated by women, and the private sector work in technology and production by men. This leads to a number of labour market inequalities, such as significant wage differences. The study examines how Finnish ICT engineers, acting in an extremely male-dominated field, and Finnish primary school teachers, acting in an extremely female-dominated field, discursively construct gender and professionalism as related to their work contexts. Twelve different interpretative repertoires are identified; each repertoire works via different rhetorical constructions and/or relationships between subject and object to give meanings to professional practices, so that some function to retain gendered practices in the professions, while others hold the potential to challenge them. The study concludes by suggesting ways in which the findings can help us understand how gendered structures are also created or challenged in other gender-biased professions in Finland. While studying gendered working life, the researcher takes advantage of different critical and feminist writing practices, and by so doing, explores her own identity as a feminist writer-researcher." Gender earnings differentials in the engineering profession in Greece
Titelübersetzung:Geschlechtsspezifische Verdienstunterschiede bei Ingenieuren
Autor/in:
Patrinos, Harry Anthony
Quelle: Higher education : the international journal of higher education and educational planning, Vol. 30 (1995) No. 4, S. 341-351
(IAB)
Inhalt: "Engineers in Greece undergo a heavy schooling investment - five years of university study instead of the usual four. Greece is atypical in that women make up a realtively large portion of the engineering work force. Working women earn substantially less than do men and there is evidence of labor market discrimination. In this paper a recent survey (1987) of employed engineers is used to examine earnings differentials between men and women and to compare the results with an examination of the results of an earlier survey (1977). Results indicate that most of the difference in earnings between male and female engineers in Greece is not accounted for by differences in productive characteristics such as education and experience and, therefore, most of the difference may be due to discrimination. Moreover, the proportion of the earnings differential not explained by productivity has increased over time. (author's abstract, IAB-Doku)

Gender segregation in the engineering and science professions : a case of continuity and change
Titelübersetzung:Geschlechtersegregation bei Ingenieuren und wissenschaftlichen Berufen - Ein Fall von Kontinuität und Wandel
Autor/in:
Devine, Fiona
Quelle: Work, Employment and Society : a journal of the British Sociological Association, Vol. 6 (1992) No. 4, S. 557-575
(IAB)
Inhalt: "It has been argued that gender segregation may be declining or, at least, that more complex and subtle forms of gender segregation are now discernible as women acquire the necessary educational credentials to enter previously maledominated professional occupations. Drawing on a case study of engineering and science, it will be seen that the 'gendered' nature of subject choices in the educational system accounts for the persistence of gender segregation in the technical professions. Moreover, despite the introduction of equal opportunity legislation, the small number of women acquiring technical degrees still face discrimination from hostile managers in the reccruitment process, and childcare and domestic responsibilities continue to block their occupational mobility within organisations where uninterrupted linear careers are the norm. The 'liberal feminist' strategy of acquiring the necessary 'human capital' to undermine social closure, in other words, has not substuntially reduced horizontal and vertical gender segregation in technical professions historically almost exclusively dominated by men." Männerberufe für Frauen? : zum Selbstverständnis von Chemikerinnen und Informatikerinnen
Titelübersetzung:Men's jobs for women? : the self-conception of female chemists and female computer scientists
Autor/in:
Roloff, Christine
Quelle: Studium Feminale: 3. Band der Bonner Vorträge. Bonn: B & T Verl. (Studium Feminale), 1989, S. 75-90
(BB)
