Assessing equal opportunities in the European Union
Titelübersetzung:Einschätzung der Gleichstellung in der EU
Autor/in:
Plantenga, Janneke; Hansen, Johan
Quelle: International labour review, Vol. 138 (1999) No. 4, S. 351-379
(IAB)
Inhalt: "To usefully evaluate the extent of equal opportunity demands innovative methodology. The authors select indicators of the relative opportunities of men and women (the 'gender gap'), including differences in employment, wages, and the sharing of unpaid work; and also indicators of women's absolute situation in the labour market. These indicators are then estimated empirically for 15 member states, with highly revealing results. To close the circle, the main determinants of equal opportunity are posited - including the rate of economic growth, tax systems, working-time regimes, childcare facilities and parental leave arrangements. Seeing country performance in that light produces compelling lessons for policy." (author's abstract)

Gendering the management of change in higher education : a case study
Autor/in:
Goode, Jackie; Bagilhole, Barbara
Quelle: Gender, work and organization, Vol. 5 (1998) Iss. 3, S. 148-164
Inhalt: "This article reports an investigation into the influence of gender at a pre-1992
UK university. Interviews with Heads of Departments and others defined as occupying
'middle management' positions reveal three distinct stances to the new higher education,
of 'collaboration', 'resistance' and 'transformation' and the article explores how
gender influences these stances. It attempts to move beyond a simple focus on gender
differences, towards answering Bacchi's (1990) call for 'a more useful political analysis
(which) would draw attention to the way in which the current economic system encourages
certain behaviours and discourages others'. It shows that women academics are taking
a transformational stance, but that the stances are not gender-specific. Gender is
institutionally embedded with other organizational characteristics, such as academic
discipline, departmental size, compatibility with external commercial activity, and
the ability or otherwise to generate funds. Questions are raised about the contribution
of such stances to the future of the new educational order." (author's abstract)|
Domestic service, migration and the social status of women at marriage: the case of a Dutch Sea Province, Zeeland 1820-1935
Autor/in:
Bras, Hilde
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 23 (1998) 3, S 3-19
(prh)
Inhalt: 'Some scholars have seen female domestic service as a 'bridging occupation', facilitating the migration of women from the countryside to the cities and enabling them to make advantageous marriages and become upwardly socially mobile. However, previous research has yielded contradictory results with regard to the marriages of female servants. On the basis of 1800 marriage records, in this article it has been estimated how social background, occupation and migration determined the status at marriage of women in the province of Zeeland the Netherlands, in the period 1820-1935. When holding everything equal, just exercising the occupation of domestic service didn't result in marriages with men of higher social positions as could be expected given the status of the job. However, living in a city by the time of one's marriage, did indeed offer women greater chances on a high status marriage.' (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:Pearls or sand in the gearbox? : women's colleges in the U.S.A; an ethnographic analysis, using Wellesley as an example
Autor/in:
Inhalt: US women drop out of research more often than men, so that by the time they reach the end of the 'leaky pipeline' — from undergraduates through to faculty appointments — they are substantially under-represented. By contrast, ethnic minorities — African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians — tend not even to begin science studies.
