Inhalt: The current study explores the reasons for noninvariance of the measurements of gender role attitudes across countries. While previous studies have shown that noninvariance is a problem for comparative research and pointed out methods to alleviate the risks of drawing invalid conclusions, none has so far tried to explain why measurements of gender role attitudes are nonequivalent. Therefore, we use multilevel structural equation modeling to exploring measurement invariance and explain its absence. We use data assessing peoples' views on the specialization of roles by gender and the consequences of female employment on family's well-being from the International Social Survey Programme. We can replicate the findings from prior research indicating that scalar measurement invariance across countries is absent. Furthermore, we use two country-level variables to explain the noninvariance of particular items. The cultural value embeddedness explains noninvariance to a considerable degree while the Gender Inequality Index from the United Nations Development Programme does not. Therefore, we conclude that issues of comparability of gender role attitudes are related mainly to cultural rather than structural differences between countries.

Inhalt: Researching hard-to-reach populations which operate in spheres of illegality and violence is impacted by issues of rivalry, territorial inaccessibility, and distrust, as well as ethical and moral concerns. In this article I discuss the difficulties faced by female researchers carrying out fieldwork with gangs and focus on gender-based and race dynamics, which affect qualitative research in male-dominated spheres. Drawing on LEE's (1995) conceptualization of ambient and situational risks, I outline the risks related to conducting fieldwork with gangs in Trinidad and Tobago's violent outskirt areas. I furthermore stress the researcher's responsibility to survive fieldwork and draw on the privileges I enjoyed and the threats I faced as a young, white female. This study contributes to our understanding of how sampling techniques can successfully reach hard-to-reach populations in high-risk areas and within a limited time frame by introducing a refined sampling technique, the successive approach.

Demonstrating How to Best Examine Group-based Segregation: A Statistical and Conceptual Multilevel Approach

Inhalt: Segregation between ethnic or sociodemographic groups represents a longstanding key independent and dependent variable for the social sciences. However, researchers have only recently begun to take advantage of inferential rather than descriptive statistical techniques
in order to assess various aspects of segregation. Specifically, this paper shows that the multilevel binomial response approach suggested by Leckie et al. (2012) provides a particularly flexible framework for describing and explaining segregation in ways not previously possible. Taking the index of dissimilarity (D) as an example we demonstrate how the multilevel binomial response approach helps to reduce the problem of small unit bias, allows to asses segregation at different scales and enables researchers to better understand the role of individual- and contextual-level explanatory variables in shaping segregation. To this end, we employ three case studies focusing on different manifestations of ethnic and gender segregation using survey data from urban, national and cross-national settings.

Why were there three? Determinants of the presence of
an intimate partner during face-to-face interviews

Inhalt: This study analyses determinants of the presence of an intimate partner during face-to-face
interviews. Based on theoretical assumptions about opportunity structure, social control,
social support, and companionship, we investigated partner presence using data from the first
wave of the German Family Panel (pairfam). Descriptive results revealed that an intimate
partner was present in every seventh interview. Multivariate results using separate logistic
regression models for the presence of the female (n = 3,272) and the male partner (n = 2,348)
revealed that the opportunity structure, such as the couple’s living arrangements or their
employment status, had the greatest influence on the presence of both female and male
partners. Gender differences existed for social control, social support and companionship.
The results suggest that partner presence could most easily be prevented by taking into
account the opportunity structure.

Gender of interviewer effects in a multitopic centralized CATI panel survey
Autor/in:
Lipps, Oliver; Lutz, Georg
Quelle: Methods, data, analyses : a journal for quantitative methods and survey methodology (mda), 11 (2017) 1, S 67-86
Inhalt: "This paper is motivated by two recent articles which show that numerous studies which analyzed
gender of interviewer effects did not take interviewer nonresponse selection effects into account. For example, interviewers may be more successful at recruiting respondents with characteristics similar to themselves and who give answers that are similar to their own, and this may result in spurious gender of interviewer effects. Our research is novel because it uses data from a large panel survey in which the same respondent is asked the same questions repeatedly by interviewers of random genders using the centralized telephone
mode. We use the panel design to show the importance of checking for all relevant variables in models where selection may cause bias. To this end, we use respondent fixed effects models as a reference to yield unbiased coefficients. We find gender of interviewer effects that are in line with social desirability theory on gender issues such as female discrimination. However, not all gender-related questions are affected by gender of interviewer effects and, in addition, we do not find any effects on political and (factual) household task related questions. In line with the notion of social distance, there is a higher likelihood that answers respondents are less comfortable with are given to interviewers of the same gender regarding (sensitive) health questions." Analytical Strategy for Dealing with Neutrality Claims and Implicit Masculinity Constructions: Methodological Challenges for Gender Studies in Science and Technology
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 17 (2016) 3, 21 S
Inhalt: On the basis of an empirical example, we offer in this article a methodological discussion of the challenges and pitfalls gender studies scholars face when analyzing how gender norms are attributed to epistemic cultures in science and engineering. Faced with actors who claim neutrality and objectivity for themselves and their work, the challenge is to analyze gender norms that are mostly implicit without reifying gender differences. Committed to the goal of opening this black box, we propose an analytical strategy for qualitative empirical research to unveil these subtle, highly normalized, discursive practices of attributing gender norms to the epistemic subjects, objects and activities in science and engineering, and exemplify it with reference to our own empirical study. By comparing the patterns of distinction with respect to epistemic boundaries and to gender differentiations, it is possible to trace connections between the symbolic gender order and epistemic cultures within the data. The allegedly neutral scientist as well as the engineering scholar is then shown to be the androcentric construction of a masculine coded epistemic subject.
Titelübersetzung:When no one must suffer: a cultural comparative analysis of practices of conflict management in schools

Fritzsche, Bettina
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this contribution the practical handling of differences is analysed as being framed by norms of recognition, which are examined in relation to their inclusive, respectively exclusive effects. The theoretical framework of this approach is informed by practice theory as well as Judith Butler's theory of recognition and its reception in education. This approach is demonstrated by an interpretation of two video scenes, which both show practices of handling conflicts. Those scenes are taken from an ethnographic, cross-cultural and comparative research project, which targeted pedagogical relationships in two primary schools, situated in London and Berlin. On the basis of a comparative analysis of both scenes, on the one hand, culturally different norms of recognition and their inclusive and exclusive effects can be shown. On the other hand, the potential of the chosen theoretical framework and methodical approach based on video-analysis is carved out." (author's abstract)
"We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are": questioning the "outsider" in Polish migration research

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: This article offers a reflexive account of conducting research on Polish migration to Scotland from the perspective of the "outsider". The contribution argues for a revision to the insider/outsider dichotomy viewing it as inadequately nuanced in relation to the multiple intersectionalities performed through the research encounter. It is based on data collected from biographical-narrative interviews with Polish young people living in Edinburgh, Scotland. The article explores the interview encounter between an English researcher and Polish young people about the experience of EU mobility and argues that as migration narratives unfold the distinctions between the "researcher" and the "researched" blur. In particular, I focus on the intersections of gender, class and nationality to show how different positionalities are negotiated and confronted through reflexivity. The interview is a creative process involving co-construction of narratives through dialogue, embodied performances and non-cognitive associations that draw out the multiple intersectionalities of both parties. Through this process the binary of insider/outsider is called into question and this article examines the usefulness of this dichotomy as a framework for understanding the research relationship.(author's abstract)
Deciphering political utopias: unions, female night work, and gender justice

Inhalt: "The group discussion is a qualitative method perfectly suited for analyzing attitudes and opinions at the supra-individual level and tracing the process of how they emerge. Psychoanalytic group theories expand our understanding of group processes by adding the dimension of the unconscious: groups, too, display defense reactions arid forms of repression. By adding this dimension, the authors can show how social groups proceed to collectively relegate important issues to the realm of the unconscious. In this way, social defense processes are reproduced in actu. In group discussions involving female union members, the predicament of working mothers comes to the fore particularly clearly. An excerpt from a group discussion illustrates that the women seem to perceive night work as the only realistic solution to the problem of reconciling work and family. Only when we turn to a psychoanalytic hermeneutics of scenic understanding are we able to reveal a repressed conception of life looming behind the paradoxical demand: the desire to overcome the separation of productive and reproductive labor in the lives of both sexes; a desire that can only be achieved if labor unions, too, perceive gender relations as a political challenge demanding their attention." (Autorenreferat)
