Inhalt: A partir des données de la première vague d’enquêtes du projet Générations et Genre en Russie, en Roumanie et en Bulgarie, et à partir d’une enquête comparable en Hongrie, toutes conduites récemment, cette étude s’intéresse aux taux d’entrée en union conjugale et non-conjugale. Nous avons utilisé des éléments du cadre descriptif de la seconde transition démographique comme grille d’analyse pour donner une cohérence aux données des quatre pays, et pour y explorer les traces de ce modèle de transition. Chaque pays a un contexte à part; en particulier, les évolutions récentes dans les modalités de formation des unions ont des calendriers variables, mais d’après notre étude le processus a commencé partout avant la chute du communisme, et donc avant la transition à l’économie de marché dans les années 90.

Inhalt: Using data from the first round of the national Gender and Generations Surveys of Russia, Romania, and Bulgaria, and from a similar survey of Hungary, which were all collected in recent years, we study rates of entry into marital and non-marital unions. We have used elements from the narrative of the Second Demographic Transition (SDT) as a vehicle to give our analysis of the data from the four countries some coherence, and find what can be traces of the SDT in these countries. The details vary by country; in particular, latter-day developments in union formation patterns did not start at the same time in all the countries, but in our assessment it began everywhere before communism fell, that is, before the societal transition to a market economy got underway in 1990.

Inhalt: L’Italie a longtemps été considérée comme le pays par excellence où la cohabitation hors mariage est exceptionnelle, mais la situation a récemment changé, compte-tenu de la forte progression de ce type d’union au sein des jeunes générations en Italie. Cet article, qui est consacré à l’étude du choix de la forme d’union entre 1980 et 2003, s’appuie sur les données de la première vague de l’Enquête italienne Générations et Genre. Nous considérons que le choix de débuter une union par une cohabitation hors mariage et le choix de la débuter par un mariage sont associés à des risques compétitifs, et démontrons que l’incidence de la cohabitation est toujours plus faible que celle du mariage, mais qu’elle a augmenté de près de 70 % sur la vingtaine d’années couvertes par notre étude, pendant que l’intensité du mariage baissait d’autant. Nous observons également d’importantes variations entre les grandes régions du pays: la hausse de la cohabitation est limitée à l’Italie du Nord et du Centre, alors que la nuptialité a fortement décru dans tout le pays. A l’opposé des travaux antérieurs, nos données suggèrent que la cohabitation hors mariage pourrait être en train de supplanter le mariage civil -au rôle toutefois réduit- comme forme d’union en Italie.

Inhalt: Italy has long been regarded as the country with negligible non-marital cohabitation par excellence, but lately the pattern has begun to change and entry into consensual unions has increased strongly in younger Italian generations. This article is devoted to a study of such features between 1980 and 2003 based on the data from the Italian variant of the Gender and Generations Survey, Round 1. We consider entry into marriage and entry into cohabitation as competing risks and show how the incidence of cohabitation consistently much lower but has increased by some 70% over the 20-odd years of our study, while the marriage rate has dropped by almost as much. We find great variation across major regions of the country. The rise in cohabitation is confined to Northern and Central Italy, while the risk of marriage formation has declined strongly all over the country. Unlike previous investigations, our data suggest that non-marital cohabitation may be taking over whatever minor role civil marriage has had in Italian union formation.

Inhalt: Combining the data of the 1986–2001 Microcensus surveys, I reconstruct trends in fertility intentions across time and over the life course of Austrian women born since the 1950s. Young adults in Austria expressed fertility intentions that were below the replacement-level threshold as early as in 1986 and women born since the mid-1950s consistently desired fewer than two children on average throughout their reproductive lives. A two-child family norm, however, still clearly dominates the fertility intentions of different age, cohort and education groups. Uncertainty about childbearing intentions is rather common, especially among younger and childless respondents. Different assumptions about reproductive preferences of undecided respondents affect estimates of the mean intended family size. Although Austrians were among the first in Europe to express low fertility intentions, their position is no longer unique. By the early 2000s, young women in a number of other European countries also expressed sub-replacement fertility intentions.

Inhalt: Le report de la procréation s’observe à travers l’Europe, mais les ressorts sous-jacents à cette évolution diffèrent considérablement d’un pays à l’autre. En Pologne, de même que dans d’autres pays du centre et de l’est de l’Europe, la majorité des femmes ont leur premier enfant à un âge relativement jeune. Cet article se penche sur le rôle des normes d’âge dans le maintien de la maternité précoce. La mise en relation des perceptions de l’âge et des choix procréatifs des jeunes adultes nous a permis d’établir l’importance de la dimension de l’âge dans la structuration et la régulation des choix individuels en matière de procréation. L’approche qualitative de notre étude fournit un éclairage sur la manière dont les normes d’âge sont expliquées, argumentées et approuvées. Enfin, nous reconstruisons les mécanismes de l’influence normative des âges limites sur le comportement procréatif afin de mieux comprendre le calendrier de la procréation.

Inhalt: The postponement of childbearing is occurring across Europe, but the paths of this trend differ profoundly from country to country. In Poland, as in other Central and Eastern European countries, most women have their first child at a relatively young age. This article asks about the role of age norms in sustaining the pattern of early motherhood. We investigate young adults’ perceptions of age in relation to their fertility choices. We find that age is, indeed, a salient dimension that structures and regulates individual childbearing plans. The qualitative approach of our study allows for gaining insights into how age norms are explained, argued about and sanctioned. Finally, we reconstruct the mechanisms of the normative influence of age limits (deadlines) on fertility behaviour, improving our understanding of the timing of childbearing.

Inhalt: Le but de cet article est d’examiner les déterminants des intentions de fécondité, en prenant en compte de façon explicite la concordance ou la discordance au sein des couples. La pertinence des intentions de fécondité du partenaire est bien établie dans la littérature, mais à ce jour peu d’analyses approfondies des intentions des deux partenaires ont été réalisées. Nous avons exploité les données des ménages dans l’enquête Family and Social Subjects (famille et sujets sociaux) menée par l’Institut national de la statistique en Italie en 2003, qui renseigne les caractéristiques des deux partenaires. La perspective adoptée est celle du couple, ce qui a permis de fournir une vision unifiée des intentions concordantes ou discordantes au sein du couple. Il apparaît qu’un désaccord au sein des couples en Italie est à même de se produire lorsque le rôle de la femme est moins traditionnel. En particulier, les femmes cohabitantes, très instruites et actives sont celles qui ont la probabilité la plus forte d’être en désaccord avec leur partenaire concernant les décisions d’avoir un premier enfant. La religiosité peut également être associée à des désaccords en matière d’intentions de fécondité. Nos résultats mettent en lumière tout l’intérêt de la prise en compte des deux membres du couple dans les études des intentions de fécondité.

Inhalt: The aim of this article is to examine the determinants of couples' childbearing intentions, by explicitly taking into account the agreement or disagreement of the two members of the couple. The relevance of the partner's reproductive intentions has been well recognised in the literature, but few studies have provided in-depth analyses of the fertility plans of both partners. In our study, we used the household-level data from a survey on "Family and Social Subjects", carried out by the Italian National Statistical Office in 2003, which provides characteristics on both partners. We adopted a couple's perspective which allows us to give a unitary picture of the concordant or discordant nature of partners' first child intentions. We found that a lack of agreement in the reproductive decision-making process is likely to occur in the Italian couples where the role of the woman is less traditional. In particular, cohabitant, highly educated and working women are more likely to be in disagreement with their partners in the decisions concerning having a first child. Being religious may be also a source of discordance in the couples' reproductive plans. Our findings support the utility of taking a couple-based approach in studies on fertility intentions.

Inhalt: Cet article examine l’effet que l’intention de commencer des études et l’intention d’entrer dans la vie active peuvent exercer sur les intentions de procréation et la procréation ultérieure. L’analyse tient compte également de l’impact du comportement correspondant : être en cours de scolarité, ou être en situation emploi. Le cadre théorique s’appuie sur l’étude par Barber des attitudes concurrentes, et met l’accent sur les intentions concurrentes. A partir de données d’enquêtes et d’état civil rassemblées en Bulgarie, les analyses menées révèlent l’effet des intentions concurrentes. Par exemple, l’intention de commencer des études entrave la construction et la réalisation ultérieure des intentions d’avoir un enfant dans les deux années à venir. Il en est de même pour le fait de d’être en cours de scolarité. Les deux effets sont le plus prononcés pour l’intention de devenir parent et pour l’entrée dans la parentalité. A l’opposé, l’intention d’entrer dans la vie active favorise les intentions de procréation, et, pour les hommes, il en est de même pour le fait d’être en situation d’emploi. Pour les femmes, être en situation d’emploi favorise l’intention d’avoir un second enfant. Tout ceci indique que pour analyser les intentions de procréation et la réalisation de ces intentions, il est préférable d’étudier séparément les personnes ayant exprimé l’intention concurrente de commencer des études, ou de les grouper avec celles qui sont en cours de scolarité, plutôt qu’avec celles qui ne le sont pas. Des modèles de régression logistique et des effets d’interaction ont été mis en œuvre dans les analyses.

Inhalt: This article examines the effect that intentions to start studying and to enter into employment may have on childbearing intentions and subsequent childbearing. The analysis also includes the impact of the corresponding behaviour: currently studying or being employed. The theoretical background draws on Barber's study of competing attitudes, with an emphasis on competing intentions. Based on survey and register data for Bulgaria, the analyses reveal the effect of competing intentions. For example, the intention to start studying hampers the construction and subsequent realisation of intentions to have a child within 2 years. The actual behaviour of currently studying has the same effect; both effects are most pronounced for intentions to become a parent and for actual entry into parenthood. Inversely, an intention to enter into employment facilitates childbearing intentions and, for men, so does the behaviour of being employed. The latter result holds for women’s intention to have a second child. The findings indicate that when childbearing intentions and realisation are analysed, it is preferable to consider persons with a competing intention to start studying either as a separate group or group them with those who are currently studying, not with those who are not. Logistic regression models and interaction effects are applied for the analyses.

Inhalt: Les taux de fécondité sont connus pour être plus élevés dans les banlieues que dans les villes. Cette caractéristique pourrait s’expliquer soit un effet du 'contexte' suburbain sur le comportement des individus, soit par le rôle de la 'composition' de la population. De plus, les migrants récemment arrivés en banlieue et qui souhaitent avoir des enfants pourraient exercer une influence significative sur les taux de fécondité dans ces zones. A l'aide de données longitudinales de registre finlandais, nous établissons que les taux de fécondité sont plus élevés dans les banlieues et les zones rurales que dans les villes. Les variations entre contextes résidentiels se réduisent significativement après prise en compte des caractéristiques démographiques et socio-économiques des femmes. Toutefois, ces variations ne disparaissent pas entièrement, ce qui laisse penser que le contexte local pourrait exercer une influence sur la fécondité. Alors que les nouveaux arrivants dans les banlieues ont une fécondité plus élevée que les habitants de longue date, leur rôle reste limité car ils ne constituent qu'une petite part de la population suburbaine.

Inhalt: Fertility rates are known to be higher in city suburbs. One interpretation is that the suburban 'context' influences the behaviour of individuals who reside there while an alternative is that the 'composition' of the suburban population explains the higher fertility levels. Furthermore, suburban in-migrants who intend to have children may have a significant influence on suburban fertility rates. Using Finnish longitudinal register data we show that fertility rates are higher in the suburbs and rural areas and lower in the cities. Fertility variation across these residential contexts decreases significantly after controlling for women's demographic and socio-economic characteristics. However, it does not disappear entirely suggesting that the local context may have some influence on fertility. While movers to suburbs do display higher fertility levels than non-migrant residents, their overall impact is not great because they form a small share of the suburban population.

Inhalt: Les intentions et les idéaux en matière de taille de famille ont connu un regain d’intérêt dans les sociétés développées au cours des années récentes, en partie sur la base du constat que la fécondité réalisée était plus basse que la fécondité souhaitée. Cet article s’intéresse à la question de savoir si les intentions en matière de fécondité sont stables ou pas. A partir du “life-span theory of control” de Heckhausen, l’hypothèse émise est celle d’un changement des intentions des jeunes adultes en matière de taille de famille en fonction de leurs expériences dans les domaines de la famille et de la vie professionnelle. Les données exploitées sont celles d’un panel Néerlandais au sein duquel les sujets ont été interrogés sur leurs intentions en matière de taille de famille à 6 reprises sur une période de 18 ans. Les résultats indiquent que les intentions ne sont pas stables, et qu’elles sont ajustées au fur et à mesure que l’âge avance. En moyenne, l’ajustement se fait à la baisse, mais certaines personnes ne varient pas, et d’autres ajustent à la hausse. Beaucoup de ces différences d’évolution avec l’âge peuvent être expliquées par des changements dans l’histoire des unions, le parcours éducatif et les carrières professionnelles des jeunes adultes. Ne pas réussir à trouver un partenaire et poursuivre une carrière professionnelle—pour les femmes—sont des facteurs importants. Le calendrier des naissances est également d’une importance capitale. Les sujets qui reportent la procréation jusqu’à la trentaine ont une probabilité beaucoup plus forte d’ajuster leurs intentions à la baisse que ceux qui débutent plus tôt.

Inhalt: Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in the interest in family size intentions and ideals in developed societies, partially stemming from the idea that realized fertility in these societies is lower than intended fertility. This paper addresses the question of the stability of family size intentions. Based on Heckhausen’s life-span theory of control, it is hypothesized that young adults’ family size intentions are likely to change as a result of their experiences in the family and occupational life domains. To study this issue, data are used from a Dutch panel survey in which respondents are questioned on their family size intentions six times over the course of 18 years. The results show that family size intentions are not stable, but are adjusted as people age. On average, the adjustment is downward, but some people do not adjust their intentions or even adjust them upwards. Much of this difference in age patterns can be explained by changes in the partner, educational, and occupational careers of young adults. Not finding a suitable partner and pursuing a career—for women—are important factors. But also the timing of the fertility career itself is of major importance. If respondents postpone having children until their thirties, they are much more likely to adjust their intentions downwards than if they start their childbearing career earlier.
