Titelübersetzung:Women "together" : a study of women's communities in a milieu comparison

Liebold, Renate
Quelle: Wiesbaden: VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, 2009. 259 S.
Inhalt: "Wie funktionieren weibliche Gemeinschaften? Welche Rolle spielt Geschlechtlichkeit

Gender and the changing face of higher education : a feminized future?
Autor/in:
Leathwood, Carole; Read, Barbara
Quelle: Maidenhead: Open Univ. Press, 2009. 217 S.
Inhalt: "A notable feature of higher education in many countries over the last few decades has been the dramatic rise in the proportion of female students. Women now outnumber men as undergraduate students in the majority of OECD countries, fuelling concerns that men are deserting degree-level study as women overtake them both numerically and in terms of levels of achievement. The assertion is that higher education is becoming increasingly 'feminized' - reflecting similar claims in relation to schooling and the labour market. At the same time, there are persistent concerns about degree standards, with allegations of 'dumbing down'. This raises questions about whether the higher education system to which more women have gained access is now of less value, both intrinsically and in terms of labour market outcomes, than previously. This ground-breaking book examines these issues in relation to higher education in the UK and globally. It provides a thorough analysis of debates about 'feminization', asking: To what extent do patterns of participation continue to reflect and (re)construct wider social inequalities of gender, social class and ethnicity? How far has a numerical increase in women students challenged the cultures, curriculum and practices of the university? What are the implications for women, men and the future of higher education? Drawing on international and national data, theory and research, 'Gender and the Changing Face of Higher Education' provides an accessible but nuanced discussion of the 'feminization' of higher education for postgraduates, policy-makers and academics working in the field." Chancengleichheit in akademischen Berufen : Beruf und Lebensführung in Naturwissenschaft und Technik
Titelübersetzung:Equal opportunity in academic careers : careers and life in natural science and technology

Könekamp, Bärbel
Quelle: Wiesbaden: Dt. Univ.-Verl., 2007. 199 S.
Gender and academic careers in cross-national perspective : preliminary results from a WEU survey in Poland and Germany
Autor/in:
Majcher, Agnieszka
Quelle: Institut für Politikwissenschaft, FB 06 Erziehungswissenschaft und Sozialwissenschaften, Universität Münster; Münster (Training paper / Women in European Universities, Research and Training Network), 2004. 50 S.
Inhalt: "This paper presents preliminary findings from a WEU international survey of the academic men and women in Poland and Germany. In this paper we focus on selected aspects of academic careers linked to tensions that may arise from different and conflicting roles men and women play in professional and private spheres. We attempted to propose an explanatory framework that would allow us to explain cross-national differences between career patterns in both countries as well as the extend of gender differences within the countries. This explanatory framework is linked to different university cultures and organizational aspects academic careers as well as different contexts and histories of higher education feminization processes. In Germany they would be based on negative or discriminatory integration of women into German academia and in Poland the integration took through 'loyalty contract' with all positive and negative consequences (e.g. acceptance of patriarchal and paternalistic academic culture and resistance to the feminist discourse). We found that barriers and hindrances related to the problems with reconciliation between work and family do not play a major role in career outcomes of academic women neither in Poland nor in Germany but they still affect career strategies in Germany. Polish academia provides also much more room for reconciliation of work and family than German one and this seems to be even more crucial than availability or quality of childcare. Generally academic careers in Germany put more pressures on both men and women than in Poland. Moreover these pressures seem to have less to do with the workload but rather organization of academic careers." (author's abstract)
A qualitative review of the university in Spain : meritocracy, endogamy and the gendered opportunity contexts

Quelle: Institut für Politikwissenschaft, FB 06 Erziehungswissenschaft und Sozialwissenschaften, Universität Münster; Münster (Training paper / Women in European Universities, Research and Training Network, 03/01), 2003. S. 32-66
Inhalt: "As a consequence of profound changes produced by the recent legal reform on the system of Higher Education (HE) in Spain, the academic profession is facing significant new challenges. In December 2001, the Conservative government, despite massive opposition from many sectors of Spanish society, passed a new law to reform the university sector. The Ley Orgánica de Universidades (LOU), among another modifications, incorporates changes in the structure of academic posts and embraces the inclusion of a national habilitation. The implementation of the latter, already in force in European countries such as France or Germany, aims to correct the procedures of selection and promotion, perceived to be biased by the academic endogamy. Thus, the ultimate goal of the reform is to eliminate a longlasting endogamy, the cancer of the system. This paper gives a brief account of the newly implemented measures, outlining its nature and relevance in pursuing the ultimate objective. Moreover, through a qualitative analysis, a number of themes emerge when assessing the crucial 'weakness' of the system and the appropriateness of the newly implemented procedures for selection and promotion. Finally, the opportunity contexts are also discussed to identify not only the specific gender obstacles but also the recommendations suggested to attain a truly meritocratic and equalitarian modus operandi within the system of appointments at Spanish universities." Inhalt: "The present paper consists of a statistical analysis of the situation of women in academia in Poland. It will bring to completion a first training paper published in the framework of the Women in European Universities Network. That first paper aimed to present an overview of the Polish education system by focusing on current mutations (marketisation, financial reform, ) and career track. The paper stressed the following main facts: that the private sector is becoming more and more important, that the increase in the number of students was not followed by a similar increase in the number of academic staff, that Polish academia is, on a European scale, quite feminised, but that women are rare in the top-ranking positions. Moreover, the economic transformation led to a drop in the living standards of academic staff, whereas at the same time there appeared new opportunities in the private sector. The brain drain from the public to the private sector was mostly a male affair. So one could also analyse the above-mentioned feminisation from a very pessimistic perspective - according to Renata Siemienska (2000), women should be regarded as 'winners among losers'. In this second training paper we will analyse the current situation of women in academia and the evolution of the proportion of women among students and professors since the 70's. This study presents figures at the national and institutional level and is mainly based on data collected by the Central Office of Statistics (GUS). The aim is to clarify the impact of recent transformations on the situation of women in academia, and above all to enlighten the mechanism of the glass ceiling. This part of the research in progress allows us to sort higher education institutions according to the proportion of women among professors, and the feminisation process in general. These proportions could be regarded as indications of best and worse practices and thus help us to define a sample for the forthcoming case studies. Besides that, on the basis of problems we faced in collecting and analysing the data, we will propose some recommendations aiming at improving the gender sensitivity of Polish data. All the results presented in this paper must be regarded as hypotheses that will be subject to further analysis through a questionnaire survey and case studies. The paper is divided into four parts. The first deals with the quality of data available, the second proposes an overview of the women's situation in studentship, the third part will be dedicated to an analysis of the body of professors and the last part to the verification of common hypotheses concerning the structural determination of feminisation in academia."
