Inhalt: The two parts of the gender revolution have been evolving side by side at least since the 1960s. The first part, women's entry into the public sphere, proceeded faster than the second part, men’s entry into the private sphere. Consequently, many employed mothers have carried a greater burden of paid and unpaid family support than fathers throughout the second half of the 20th century. This constituted women's "second shift," depressing fertility. A central focus of this paper is to establish second shift trends during the second half of the 20th century and their effects on fertility. Our analyses are based on data on cohort fertility, male and female labor force participation, and male and female domestic hours worked from 11 countries in Northern Europe, Western/central Europe, Southern Europe, and North America between 1960/70 and 2000/2014. We find that the gender revolution had not generated a turnaround, i.e. an increase in cohort fertility, by the end of the 20th century. Nevertheless, wherever the gender revolution has made progress in reducing women’s second shift, cohort fertility declined the least; where the second shift is large and/or has not been reduced, cohort fertility has declined the most.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article analyses how occupation-specific hours of employment influence the employment interruptions of women after family formation, and whether employment hours have an impact on different educational groups. This study uses detailed longitudinal data from the German National Educational Panel Study and aggregated occupational data from the Microcensus. Our results show how occupation-specific employment hours, even after controlling for individual characteristics, significantly influence the employment interruptions of mothers. The interruption duration of women with tertiary education is solely influenced by the amount of overtime working hours associated with specific occupations. This result indicates that the return-to-work of tertiary educated women remain mostly unaffected by their hours of employment, and likely to be attributed to both elevated opportunity costs and higher career orientations. Whilst medium and less educated women reduce their time-out from their occupation when the working hours are short and working from home is possible. Atypical employment hours, such as night-shift or weekend work, are found to be exclusively relevant for less educated women. Overall, our results demonstrate that hours of employment play an important role for the employment continuity of women without a tertiary education." (author's abstract)

Mentoring for young female practitioners and scientists in spatial and environmental planning in Germany - experiences of the joint mentoring program of the Academy for Spatial Research and Planning and the Association for Spatial and Environmental Research
Quelle: International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, 5 (2015) 4, S 129-138
Inhalt: In order to overcome the underrepresentation of women on higher management levels in planning, the Academy
for Spatial Research and Planning (ARL) and the Association for Spatial and Environmental Research (FRU) in
Germany jointly have elaborated a mentoring program for young female planning practitioners and scientists.
This article introduces objectives and elements of the mentoring program being considered a strategic talent
development in a network of excellence. Results from a survey among the mentees and mentors of five subsequent
years are presented revealing the principal verification of the program with its main elements: one-by-one
mentoring for one year each, joint events, qualification classes for the mentees, projects by mentees and support
with publications, and a final certificate. The survey reveals the need for several modifications, such as the
introduction of target agreements at the beginning of a mentoring period, the modification of the project study as
well as the extension of the mentoring period, which are discussed in detail. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the program efficacy and transfer.
Titelübersetzung:"...for me there's either the family path or the career path ..." - on the importance of normative requirements in young women's vocational orientation
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "To investigate the relationship between careers and gender, this article takes a genderfocused look at the normative requirements and career-relevant orientation which prove to be important as young women seek vocational orientation and plan their lives. Here ideas about 'pursuing a career' or being a 'career woman' can be understood as prestructured by normative discourses within which certain concepts of 'career' become dominant and have to be updated and adapted by the subjects. Normative requirements already frame the subjects' plans before they begin their working lives, and not only become relevant once they have embarked on a career and gained a certain amount of work experience. In light of this fact, the article shows how 'career' is understood and negotiated in group discussions with young women in the senior years of secondary school." (author's abstract)
