(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper addresses the exploitation of Cambodian men on Thai fisher boats. Exploitation is enabled through gender stereotypes that prohibit Cambodian men to identify themselves as victims. In addition, institutions dealing with legal support of victims are based on gender stereotypes. Thus, mainly sexual exploitation and female victims are focused by organizations of support and the state. There are no legal regulations to persecute exploited men and trafficking of men." Post-Socialist Fathers 'At Home' and 'Away from Home' in 'Old Europe': Facing the Challenge through Masculine Identity Talk
Autor/in:
Pajumets, Marion; Hearn, Jeff
Quelle: Studies of Transition States and Societies, 4 (2012) 1, S 31-47
Inhalt: "This article focuses on those Estonian male migrants to ‘Old Europe’ who spend most of their time in the domestic realm as caring fathers and supportive spouses to their wives, who are meanwhile advancing their transnational careers. In this context, masculine identity talk can be understood in terms of strategies employed in response to the challenge to the men’s masculinity that this atypical life choice is likely to entail. Identity is viewed in this article as a processual phenomenon that is relentlessly, although not always deliberately, (re)formulated in discourse, rather than determined by the assigned social roles. Analysis of in-depth interviews reveals that there are varied discourses in use that efficiently reconstruct the interviewees’ sense of personal significance. Interestingly, men predominantly combine ‘alternative’ discourses (‘caring father’, ‘supportive spouse’, ‘civilised adult’), which potentially undermine Estonian idealised masculinity, with the ‘conservative’ discourses (‘professional man’, ‘well-off ’), that reinforce the Estonian male norm. Men draw on a range of potentially oppositional and conflicting resources for constructing masculinity, without much reflexive selection from their part. Hence, the discourses men engage in position the men as much as the men appear to consciously position themselves in the discourses. This poststructuralist account of identity is located within a more structural historical context of transition and change in contemporary Europe." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses - from a theoretical and empirical point of view - how to integrate a transnational perspective into research. Therefore, the concept of articulation (Laclau/ Mouffe; Hall) will be introduced to analyze hybrid positions and their interrelation with dominant discourses, 'axes of difference' (Klinger/ Knapp/ Sauer) and power relations. To show some of the results from this analysis an interview will be presented. The focus of this analysis lies on positions in the context of migration and masculinity. Here one can find differences that lead to the question of how the interrelation between transnational localization and gender relations works." (author's abstract)

Integration im Spannungsfeld kultureller Differenzen: Islam und Geschlecht in der Marktgemeinde Telfs in Tirol

Hollomey, Christina
Inhalt: 'The aim of this paper is to show an example of a local integration project in the Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. How does a multicultural discourse contribute to the exclusion of women in the process of negotiating integration? Local municipalities, in trying to find new ways of ´living together liaise with migrant associations in order to get into contact with the local immigrant population. However, both actors often employ an essentialistview of culture that tends to naturalizehegemonic constructions of identity and finally leads to the reproduction of asymmetric structures of participation. Thus, integration projects may fail to address basic structural inequalities between social majorities and minorities. The focus of this paper is on women engaged in two Turkish Islamic associations in the Austrian Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. Discussing the example of a locally implemented integration project, it analyses how a multicultural discourse can serve to legitimate asymmetric participation structures within associations, as well as to reproduce them in the cooperation between migrant organizations and local municipalities.'
