Assessing the Role of Social Media in the Fight Against Sexual Assault

Inhalt: We examine the challenges faced by women for effective communication on social media. The majority of the data used in this study was primary, and it was gathered in the field using a questionnaire. The questionnaire utilized in this study was a written list of questions that had been carefully designed and selected to collect data. The questions were closed-ended and focused on women's issues and their use of social media. Cronbach alpha was used to test the dataset's validity, consistency, and reliability based on the obtained information. Cronbach's Alpha for all constructs or items was more significant than the minimum acceptable reliability coefficient of 0.5 to 0.9, indicating strong internal consistency.Furthermore, Cronbach's Alpha for all constructs was more than the minimal permissible reliability coefficient, indicating that they were valid and trustworthy and hence suitable for use. We notice that most respondents in this study reported that they had experienced social media harassment. Our findings show, in particular, that the majority of respondents in this study believe that women are usually overlooked when it comes to matters requiring social media opinions. We opined that information, education, and communication are empowering tools from the preceding. It is the challenge of women in leadership to dismantle the obstacles in the women's use of information media. No form of women empowerment will succeed until these challenges are met.

How Iranian Women Express Themselves through Social Media Photos: a Case Study of Instagram

Inhalt: In this study, the issue of using Instagram social network by different groups of Iranian women and their interests and desires in publication of photos is investigated. The purpose of the study is to identify the common aspects and differences in women's lives reflected in their self-expression efforts based on their social characteristics. Therefore, the women were classified into eight groups based on the elements affecting the way they show their daily lives, such as education level, occupation and marital status. Then, qualitative method, including virtual ethnographic techniques, content analysis and online interviews, was used. Photos posted on Instagram by 32 users were studied and analyzed, and these users were interviewed. Questions were asked about their tendency towards posting photos of their daily lives on Instagram via direct messages. The conceptual framework of the study included Bourdieu’s theory of 'distinction' and Baudrillard’s concept of 'system of objects'. Results showed that women in each group select specific approaches to the publication of photos based on their social conditions. In the present article, these differences are discussed in detail. The significance of this research lies in the possibility of understanding different aspects of women’s everyday life and their individual identity through self-reports in the new media as opposed to the traditional media which only presents a standardized type of identification. Since studying women's efforts in presenting themselves on social media has been neglected in studies conducted on social networks in Iran, this study leads to a better understanding of Iranian women's diverse identities.
Female Journalists’ Experience of Online Harassment: A Case Study of Nepal

Inhalt: This study examines the experiences of female journalists in Nepal in the context of rapidly growing expansion of broadband Internet. By examining the findings of the qualitative in-depth interview of 48 female journalists, it argues that online platforms are threatening press freedom in Nepal, mainly by silencing female journalists. The study also indicates that the problem is particularly severe in such a patriarchal society as a significant number of incidents of abuse go unreported, largely due to a culture of shame as well as ineffective legislation. Over the course of this article, I have attempted to show how social issues raised by second-wave feminism and online feminism are similar. The findings show that some of the female journalists experiencing harassment tolerate it by being ‘strong like a man,’ while many of them avoid social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to keep free of such abuse. The study also suggests that individual efforts to tackle the vicious issue of misogyny might not be enough and collective effort from legislation, media organisations, and feminists is required to address the issue.

Social Media as a Disguise and an Aid: Disabled Women in the Cyber Workforce in China

Inhalt: Existing literature shows that people living with physical impairment are systematically disadvantaged in the workforce and their voices are often silenced. With a perspective of intersectionality, this article looks into how disabled women suffer from multiple forms of discrimination and how social media may emerge as a tool of empowerment for them in both the workforce and their everyday lives. Drawing on five cases of Chinese disabled women in the cyber workforce, the study finds that the booming Internet economy enables more disabled women to financially support themselves. Social media appears as a cover for these women to disguise their disability identity and get more job opportunities. It serves as an aid in many cases to allow these women to increase social participation, to project their voice, and to form alliances. The risks and challenges that disabled women often encounter in the cyber workforce are also discussed.

Inhalt: Technik wird in unserer Gesellschaft noch immer mit Männlichkeit assoziiert. Das Bild eines Mannes, der mit einer schweren Bohrmaschine arbeitet, erscheint uns vertrauter als das einer Frau, die dieselbe Tätigkeit ausführt. Derartige Repräsentationen von Technik und Geschlecht werden auch von den Medien verbreitet und könnten so bereits Mädchen und jungen Frauen den Zugang zu Technik erschweren. Digitalisierte Medienwelten bieten allerdings die Möglichkeit, neue Technik-Bilder zu entwerfen und dominante Vorstellungen dadurch zu verschieben. Hier könnten Öffentlichkeiten für Mädchen und Frauen entstehen, die eine Selbstverständigung über technische Interessen und damit einhergehend eine Erfahrung von Kompetenz vermitteln könnten. Anhand von fünf Gruppendiskussionen mit 12- bis 15-jährigen Gymnasiastinnen wurden deren Technikverständnis, deren Nutzung digitaler Medien zu Technikthemen, vor allem aber auch deren Ideen zu einer für sie attraktiven Vermittlung von Technikthemen erfragt. Dabei wurden insbesondere die Vorteile einer symmetrischen Kommunikation im Netz deutlich.

Changing Media Ecologies in Thailand: Women's Online Participation in the 2013/2014 Bangkok Protests

Inhalt: Traditionally marginalized groups now have more access to new and unconventional means to participate in politics, transforming the media ecologies of existing political environments. Contemporary feminist scholarship has centered on how women use new media technologies to serve political agendas. However, this literature focuses predominately on women in the West, while women in developing countries, or Asia more generally, have been largely excluded from analysis. This article aims to fill in this gap by examining Thai women’s online activities during the 2013/2014 Bangkok political protests. Specifically, we ask how the rise of social and digital media has altered what it means to participate politically in the context of Thai women’s present-day political experience. To answer this question we looked at how women resorted to various digital and social media to discuss women’s rights and political issues, including Yingluck Shinawatra’s political leadership as Thailand’s first female prime minister (2011-2014). Moving beyond traditional notions of participation, we argue that there is a need to recognize the emerging dynamics of women’s online engagement in the political landscape of Thailand. In the context of a totalitarian state, speaking out against the ruling authority online embodies an additional layer of citizen resistance, a feature of digital life that is often taken for granted in Western democracies.

Inhalt: 'Die Mehrheit der deutschen Weblog-Autor/-innen ist weiblich, zu diesem Ergebnis kommt eine Bochumer Untersuchung aus dem Jahre 2006. Auf der Grundlage einer Zufallsauswahl von 464 Weblogs konnten Aussagen zu Geschlecht und Alter von Weblog-Autor/-innen gemacht werden. Es zeigte sich, dass besonders weibliche Teenager diese Form der Publikation im Internet nutzen. Ausgehend von der Fragestellung ob das Führen von Weblogs Ansatzpunkte für politische Beteiligung bietet, die auch von Frauen genutzt werden, wurden die Weblogs des Samples zudem inhaltsanalytisch untersucht. Dabei zeigten sich Unterschiede zwischen den Blogs männlicher und weiblicher Autoren. Im Vergleich zeigten darüber hinaus häufig verlinkte Blogs einen deutlich geringeren Frauenanteil. Insgesamt erscheinen die Ausdrucksformen innerhalb der deutschen Blogosphäre hochgradig gegendert.' (Autorenreferat)

Will e-Governance and e-Democracy Lead to e-Empowerment? Gendering the Cyber State

Inhalt: The onslaught of information and communications technologies (ICTs), the burgeoning popularity of the Internet, and the ideology behind the new information economy has coalesced into a force that is fundamentally reshaping the contours of the Canadian political landscape. This reorganization of the state will profoundly impact women’s opportunities to participate in and alter conventional notions of citizenship. The establishment of electronic or e-government and the implications behind the development of the cyberstate promise to revolutionize Canadian governance and our traditional understandings of democracy. While there is the political possibility of shaping the emerging cyberstate as a vehicle of empowerment for women and marginalized others, there is also the prospect that Internet-facilitated government will exacerbate inequalities and impair women’s citizenship status. Inhalt: Die Autorinnen berichten über den erfolgreichen Einsatz moderner Informationstechnologien in der Virtuellen Internationalen Frauenuniversität (Vifu), durch den die Vernetzung der Teilnehmerinnen von unterschiedlichen Standorten aus und über die Zeit der Präsenzphase der Internationalen Frauenuniversität (ifu) im Sommer 2000 hinaus ermöglicht wurde. Die ifu-Studentinnen kommen aus ca. 130 Ländern und verstehen sich gleichzeitig als Multiplikatorinnen, die technologische Innovationen in ihre Heimatländer tragen und neue, elektronisch geknüpfte Netzwerke weiter entwickeln. Die vorliegende wissenschaftliche Begleitung hat zum Ziel, die Bildungsaufgaben der Vifu zu unterstützen und nähere Erkenntnisse über den geschlechtsspezifischen Zugang zu Computern und Internet, zur computergestützten Kommunikation und on-line-community-Bildung sowie zur vorhandenen Arbeitsumgebung (z.B. Mailing-Listen, chat-rooms, Software-Oberflächen, Web-Design) zu vermitteln. Der Ausgangspunkt war die aus den Ergebnissen bisheriger Forschungen zu 'Gender und Informationstechnologie' entwickelte Leitfrage nach dem Einfluss der Variablen Geschlecht, Alter, Ethnizität und soziostrukturelle Bedingungen bei der Implementierung computergestützter virtueller Lernumgebungen. Dieser Frage werden folgende vier Untersuchungsdimensionen zugeordnet: Konzeption und Gestaltung virtueller Lernumgebungen (1); Computergestützte Kommunikation: Interaktion und Partizipation in virtuellen Kommunikationsforen (2); Web-Design (3) und Perspektiven für die Bildung stabiler Netzbeziehungen (4). Der vorliegende Bericht umfasst neben einem Überblick über die Forschungsliteratur zu den relevanten Arbeitsfeldern der Vifu die Ergebnisse von leitfadengestützten Interviews mit ExpertInnen im Bereich von virtuellen Lehr- und Lernformen sowie von Gender Studies in den Informationstechnologien. Abschließend werden Empfehlungen für die Weiterentwicklung virtueller Bildungsangebote und für pluralistische Formen der Wissensgenerierung herausgearbeitet. (ICI)
Inhalt: 'The use of modern information and communication technology as well as of internet-based networking facilities is the essential component of the Virtual International Women's University ('vifu'). The 'vifu' is the continuation of the International Women's University which was initiated in the framework of EXPO 2000 and was present at the EXPO for some time. The aim of the 'vifu' is to set up a virtual network of women from more than 130 countries. The investigation, which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and was conducted at the ZiF, provides an overview of pertinent research. Structured interviews were conducted with international experts to gain sociologically founded insights into the development of virtual teaching and learning environments as a field of practice. The analysis focused an the ethnic, social, gender- and culture-specific conditions of developing virtual learning environments, which constitute at present a large field of 'experimenting'. The recommendations that could be deducted from the Interviews show: It is important to take not only structural barriers to online communication into account (e.g. differences in income, education or local infrastructure). In the international context it is the (currently underrated) interaction of these factors with the categories of gender, ethnic group, and geographic origin that must taken into consideration. Internet-based communication in electronic networks should also be prepared for differing levels of knowledge and of expectations an the part of the participants. Maximal opportunities of participation and an 'intercultural' internet competence should be facilitated by using concepts that can be grasped intuitively, by transmitting knowledge (in the phase of face-to-face instruction), by providing surfaces that are easy to use and by keeping requirements of technical resources low while at the same time avoiding high-tech gimmicks and semantic codes. In spite of the high demand of development and coaching involved, learning environments based an information and communication technology can make existing educational options more flexible, can enlarge conventional correspondence courses and promote the institutionalisation of scientific networks. Above all one thing is needed to reach a wide and sustainable participation in IKT applications in teaching: a didactic concept which could be achieved through an intensive co-operation of experts and through an evaluation of the experience gained with the 'vifu'.'
