This thematic issue presents a multidisciplinary look at the field of communicating on and with different members of minority groups who, based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or a background in migration, experience relative disadvantage and marginalization compared to the dominant social group. The contributors to this thematic issue present a variety of professional contexts (i.e., portrayals in journalistic content, in fiction and non-fiction audiovisual content, on social media platforms and in health care). Taken together, the contributions examine various theoretical angles, thereby adopting new research directions through the use of quantitative, qualitative or mixed methodologies.

Intersektionalität und Gouvernementalität: die Regierung von Prostitution in Luxemburg
Autor/in:
Mauer, Heike
Titelübersetzung:'Games of truth': Diversity versus or inclusive Intersectionality?
Autor/in:
Krell, Gertraude
Quelle: Soziale Probleme, 25 (2014) 2, S 194-208
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In the field of Gender Studies, we often find contrasting juxtapositions of 'intersectionality' and 'diversity' that tend to devalue and reject diversity. From a Foucaultian perspective, I perceive these juxtapositions as discursive fabrications and as 'games of truth'. As a player in this game, I will debunk these images of diversity and suggest different ones - while investigating the rote of disability in the two concepts. I will also show that pioneer studies in the field of U.S. diversity management have long been drawing an intersectional arguments since they focus an discrimination as well as an the interdependence of social categories from a theoretical perspective. Moreover, theoretical and empirical work on diversity and using diversity - with an emphasis on criticism and (de)construction - is also the motto of (Critical) Diversity Studies, an approach there again based on intersectionality. Finally, I argue against 'diversism' and plead for recognition and cooperation on a level playing field instead of demarcation and devaluation." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Intersectional perspectives in social work: a productive research approach in work with drug using female sex workers
Autor/in:
Schrader, Kathrin
(ICE2)

Violence against Women and Ethnicity: Commonalities and Differences across Europe
Herausgeber/in:
Thiara, Ravi K.; Condon, Stephanie A.; Schröttle, Monika
Quelle: Opladen, 2011. 426 S
Inhalt: This book draws together both: theory and practice on minority/migrant women and gendered violence. The interplay of gender, ethnicity, religion, class, generation and sexuality in shaping the lives, experiences and choices of minority/migrant women affected by violence has not always been adequately theorised within much of the existing writing on violence against women. Feminist theory, especially the insights provided by the concept of intersectionality, are central to the editors' conceptual frameworks. Violence against women has received greater political attention across Europe since the 1990s, leading also to increased research in this area. While the responses to the issue vary in different European contexts, there are clearly some similarities reported about the forms and impacts of violence against women. Research and practice traditions on the issue also vary, depending on the level of importance and resources attached. Despite extensive research on violence against women generally, knowledge on the issues and experiences of women and children from minority/migrant groups is more fragmented and at times scant. This leaves a clear gap and no book has yet drawn together both existing research and practice on minority/migrant women and gendered violence in a theorised way. Such a book is long overdue. It has far reaching relevance as minority/migrant communities are settled in all major countries across Europe, which are all struggling with similar issues in research and practice.
Migration, Geschlecht, Gewalt: Überlegungen zu einem intersektionellen Gewaltbegriff
Titelübersetzung:Migration, gender, violence: towards an intersectional concept of violence
Autor/in:
Sauer, Birgit
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political measures against as well as scientific debates about so-called 'traditional harmful practices' against women in western immigration countries put the necessity of an intersectional concept of violence on the feminist scientific agenda, Such a concept should aim to escape the trap of culturalizing the 'Other'. It should also build the ground to guarantee sustainable harm reduction without stigmatizing minority groups nor victimizing women affected by violence. In the context of a broad feminist notion of violence the article suggests the re-theorization of the concept of violence against women. This conceptualization should include first the interplay of structures and discourses of violence, second the interaction of structures of inequality between minority groups and dominant society, and third the intersection of structures of inequality and violence between gender, culture, ethnicity, religion, and class."
