Inhalt: The aim of this study was to start developing knowledge that can contribute to creating an inclusive environment for all academics. Since research has shown that women academics face more barriers during their academic career and are still underrepresented in senior positions (LNVH 2017, Van den Brink and Benschop 2014), this study focused on the experiences of women. This is only a first step, and the report is explicitly meant to be a starting point for more elaborate and extensive research into the topic of harassment in academia – also among men and non-binary academics. Starting from the experiences of women academics, this study was guided by the following research questions: 1. What practices of harassment can be identified in the stories and narratives of academic women? Is it possible to discern multiple manifestations of harassment? 2. What experiences are reported by whom? Which preliminary patterns can we discern? 3. What structural and cultural characteristics and developments in the academic system facilitate harassment? 4. What are the consequences of harassment for individuals, organisations and science in general? 5. What are promising suggestions for limiting negative consequences and for preventing harassment in academia? This research provides a qualitative exploration that analyses the “what, why and how” of harassment, rather than its prevalence or other quantitative characteristics.

Inhalt: Mit dem Hochschulranking nach Gleichstellungsaspekten 2019 liegt die neunte Ausgabe dieses etablierten und langjährigen Instruments zur Qualitätssicherung für Gleichstellung an Hochschulen vor. Das Ranking beruht auf einem mehrdimensionalen Indikatorenmodell und berücksichtigt über das Kaskadenmodell die Fächerprofile der Hochschulen. Verwendet wurden Daten der amtlichen Hochschulstatistik für das Jahr 2017. Zusätzlich zu dem Hochschulranking beinhaltet die Veröffentlichung ein Ranking der Bundesländer, das auf ähnlichen Indikatoren beruht. Die Veröffentlichung wendet sich an alle, die in Hochschulen und Politik an der Qualität und dem Innovationspotenzial unserer Hochschulen interessiert sind.

Inhalt: This volume presents a series of analyses that range from the presentation of the cognitive framework from the theoretical point of view, to that of the (few) data available. We grouped the themes into four parts 1. What do we know? 2. How to address the problem: solutions 3. How to address the problem: prevention 4. Wider perspectives The first part with the contributions of Claudine Hermann, Colette Guillopé, Sylvie Cromer, Ilaria Di Tullio, Francesca Torelli, provides a crosssection of the state of the analyses carried out in Italy and abroad. Knowing the terms of the question and the boundaries of the problem is the preliminary step to find the tools to deal with it and, hopefully, solve it. What solutions can be envisaged? What can be done? In the second part Ann Olivarius, Chiara de Fabritiis and Fernie Maas discuss the issues referring to the different contexts. The third part deals with the question of possible solutions to the problem from the prevention side, such as the development of guidelines and regulations that prevent problems from arising, rather than punish them later. Lorenza Perini, Laura Chlebos, Agata Sangianantoni, Valeria De Paola, Ingrid Hunstad, Maria Luisa Chiofalo and Tiziana Metitieri present some of the possible areas of intervention to avoid repeating episodes that are no longer tolerable. The fourth part collects some contributions of selected authors that widen the perspective between history and discrimination. Mirella Orsi, Anna Lisa Somma, Sona Grigoryan, Antonella Nappi, Federica De Luca, Mariella Paciello, Pietro Greco and Monica Zoppè contributed in this final part.

Inhalt: Das Grundgesetz enthält das Recht auf einen Vornamen, der mit der Geschlechtsidentität in Einklang steht. Dies ist nicht nur gefestigte Rechtsprechung des Bundesverfassungsgerichts, sondern vom Grundsatz her auch im einfachen Recht anerkannt. Wo letzteres eine mindestens dreijährige Wartezeit und bestimmte Begutachtungserfordernisse für einen Vornamenswechsel aufstellt, bindet dies nicht auch die sich selbstverwaltende Universität. Ihr ist es ohne Weiteres rechtlich möglich, den Wunschvornamen in Hochschulangelegenheiten zuzulassen und damit die erheblichen Belastungen inter-und transgeschlechtlicher Studierender im Vorfeld der amtlichen Transition zu lindern, Nachteile auf Grund der Geschlechtsidentität zu beseitigen, das allgemeine Persönlichkeitsrecht zu wahren und Chancengleichheit beim Zugang zu Bildung zu verbessern. Dies gilt auch für Handlungen mit Außenwirkung wie die Ausstellung von Zeugnissen und Diplomen

Inhalt: Internationale Studien belegen die vielschichtigen Wirkungsweisen des Gender Bias in der Wissenschaft. Vor allem in der Postdoc-Phase zeigen die Eckpfeiler des wissenschaftlichen Karrieremodells (Mobilität, hoher Publikationsoutput, permanente Verfügbarkeit) in Verbindung mit nach wie vor wirksamen Geschlechterrollen und -zuschreibungen deutlich geschlechtsabhängige Auswirkungen. Van den Besselaar und Sandström (2017) sprechen hier von einem Teufelskreis (vicious circle): Der Gender Bias führt dazu, dass Frauen eher in den unteren und mittleren wissenschaftlichen Positionen zu finden sind, wo sie über weniger Ressourcen und Entscheidungskompetenzen verfügen. Dies hat einen negativen Einfluss auf ihre Performance und Sichtbarkeit (z.B. Anzahl an Publikationen, Grants, Drittmittel), was wiederum den Gender Bias reproduziert. Die vorliegende Handreichung möchte dazu beitragen, diesen »vicious circle« zu durchbrechen und versteht sich als Anregung, die Mechanismen des Gender Bias – aber auch andere Aspekte des unconscious bias – in wissenschaftlichen Auswahlverfahren zu reflektieren.

Inhalt: We investigate whether competitive selection processes generate gender inequality in the context of a prestigious graduate fellowship program. All applications are scored remotely by expert reviewers and the highest ranked are invited to an in-person interview. The data show a very large gender gap in success rates: women's success rate is 36% lower than men's. About one third of this gap is due to the lower grades of female candidates, which is surprising given women's higher GPA in the population of college graduates. Adjusting for GPA and a rich set of fixed-effects, women's success rate remains 16% lower than for comparable male candidates. We show that this gap is explained by reviewers engaging in gender balancing. Namely, reviewers favor the minority gender in each field of study but, except for STEM, all fields are female-dominated. Our simulations show that the interview plays an important role, but the quantitative scoring has a more profound effect on the award allocation. Merging administrative records on the population of graduates from a large university, we document an important gender gap in participation. We find that high-GPA female graduates are much less likely to apply to the fellowship program. The combination of the gender gaps in participation and success in the program imply that high-GPA female graduates are almost 50% less likely to obtain a fellowship than their male counterparts.
