Demarcation of population concepts and extrapolation in the microcensus

A frequent first step when working with the microcensus scientific use files (SUFs) is to compare simple marginal frequency counts in the SUF with published microcensus results from the Federal Statistical Office’s (Statistisches Bundesamt) specialist series (Fachserien). When doing so, it should be borne in mind that the SUF (basic file) represents a de facto anonymised 70% subsample of the households of the original microcensus data. When comparing the results of the frequency counts in the SUF with the Federal Statistical Office publications, the appropriate weighting variable must be used.
