Demarcation of survey units
In what follows, you will find information on certain survey units. For each survey year, the variables needed to form specific identifiers are indicated.
In the microcensus, the demarcation of private households usually takes place via the number of the sampling district and the number of the household in the sampling district. Moreover, in some microcensus scientific use files (SUFs), it is necessary to take the federal state (Bundesland) into account; in other microcensuses, demarcation on the basis of the household number is sufficient.
The following overview includes all the variables that are required to unequivocally demarcate a private household in the respective survey years. In these variables, persons who belong to the population resident in non-institutional and institutional collective dwellings should be coded as “Missing”.

A unique family number can be created in the microcensus by combining the household number and the family number. The following table provides an overview of the corresponding variables for the identification of families in the individual microcensuses.

Information about consensual unions has been available only since the 1996 Microcensus. To identify consensual unions, the household number can be combined with the number of the consensual union. The following table provides an overview of the corresponding variables for the identification of consensual unions.
