Inhalt: Fertility rates are known to be higher in city suburbs. One interpretation is that the suburban 'context' influences the behaviour of individuals who reside there while an alternative is that the 'composition' of the suburban population explains the higher fertility levels. Furthermore, suburban in-migrants who intend to have children may have a significant influence on suburban fertility rates. Using Finnish longitudinal register data we show that fertility rates are higher in the suburbs and rural areas and lower in the cities. Fertility variation across these residential contexts decreases significantly after controlling for women's demographic and socio-economic characteristics. However, it does not disappear entirely suggesting that the local context may have some influence on fertility. While movers to suburbs do display higher fertility levels than non-migrant residents, their overall impact is not great because they form a small share of the suburban population.

Inhalt: Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in the interest in family size intentions and ideals in developed societies, partially stemming from the idea that realized fertility in these societies is lower than intended fertility. This paper addresses the question of the stability of family size intentions. Based on Heckhausen’s life-span theory of control, it is hypothesized that young adults’ family size intentions are likely to change as a result of their experiences in the family and occupational life domains. To study this issue, data are used from a Dutch panel survey in which respondents are questioned on their family size intentions six times over the course of 18 years. The results show that family size intentions are not stable, but are adjusted as people age. On average, the adjustment is downward, but some people do not adjust their intentions or even adjust them upwards. Much of this difference in age patterns can be explained by changes in the partner, educational, and occupational careers of young adults. Not finding a suitable partner and pursuing a career—for women—are important factors. But also the timing of the fertility career itself is of major importance. If respondents postpone having children until their thirties, they are much more likely to adjust their intentions downwards than if they start their childbearing career earlier.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The model of demographic transition and the research about fertility decline deals with elementary human behaviour but it seems to be 'without gender'. In general, family-planning is not treated as a question of conscious decisions of couples, women and men. Constructing a model of the demographic transition which takes into account gender, it is necessary to combine this model with findings from social history, gender history and cultural history with regard to the processes of the rise of a bourgeois middle class with special forms of organization work and family. This paper puts up some demographic results for discussion combined with questions of gender and demographic transition mentioned above. As source the authors can use a demographic database on 5,000 nineteenth-century families out of Stuttgart (1830-1910) containing data on marriage behaviour, births, and mortality, as well as numerous other data. The results demonstrate the importance and pioneering role of the early modern educated civil servants - the core of what was to become the modern educated middle class. Combining profession and the gender-specific division of work and family's household in this social group, they can show cultural patterns of motivation to reduce births and the demographic results of the inforcement of the bourgeois gender model. Above all, the authors can show the importance of women in decision making about birth control.' (author's abstract)

The decline of illegitimacy and the control of marital fertility during the demographic transition: testing the innovation-diffusion hypothesis using cohort fertility data from a Belgian town, 1850-1910

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'One of the major arguments made in the literature in support of the view that the European fertility transition was the result of the spread of an innovation called contraception, is that illegitimate fertility fell together with marital fertility. Indeed, the parallel decline of both illegitimacy and marital fertility in the final part of the nineteenth century suggests that individuals in Europe were applying new forms of contraceptive behaviour that were previously not done or even unthinkable. The aim of this contribution in to investigate one implication of the argument: if the diffusion hypothesis is correct, one would expect that women who got children before marriage would be less likely to control their fertility by means of parity-dependent stopping behaviour within marriage than comparable women without premarital births. This hypothesis is investigated with a logistic regression model of stopping behaviour using data from three birth cohorts living in the Belgian town of Leuven between 1850 and 1910. The results indicate that, at least in Leuven, the decline of illegitimacy can at most only partly be explained by the diffusion of innovative contraceptive behaviour. More than backing up the diffusionist interpretation, the findings lend particular support to the courtship model of premarital pregnancies and births. The findings also suggest that, during the initial stage of the fertility transition, non-marital childbearing may have reflected a liberal attitude towards reproduction for some. In turn, this liberal attitude in a 'bastardy-prone sub society' may also have been positively associated with early stopping behaviour.' (author's abstract)

Childless future? An insight from the analysis of childbearing preferences in Europe

Inhalt: 'The relatively low levels of ideal and ultimately intended family size manifested in some European countries (Goldstein et al. 2003; Testa, 2006) inspired a careful analysis of the childless preference in Europe based on the Eurobarometer surveys in 2001 and 2006. The aim of the current paper is to investigate the childlessness ideal, or the intention to stay without children, and their contribution to the current levels of ideal and intended fertility in Europe. The analysis is complemented by a comparison between childless women and women with children in respect to two relevant aspects related to childbearing and childrearing: the circumstances perceived as most important in the fertility decisions and the opinion on gender roles in family life. Findings show that young Austrian women hold the record for the lowest fertility ideals and intentions, which are on average definitely below replacement levels. Austria is also the country with the largest diffusion of the childless preference. However, the childless option only plays a secondary role in explaining the cross-national differences and childlessness - although quite high in some countries - is still very rare as an enduring or a lifetime choice. Interestingly, childless women are not significantly different from women with children in their opinion on the relevant childbearing decision- making factors and do not show different views on issues related to gender roles in family life.' Inhalt: In this article the authors review the trends & differentials in mortality from self-inflicted injury & poisoning in the Czech Republic between the early 1970s & the present in terms of their socio-economic & demographic associations. They describe the sources of data on suicide & explore the possible extent of under-reporting of deaths from suicide, & they examine the differences in suicide incidence by age & sex. With the decline in mortality from suicide, the male/female ratio of suicide rates increased from about 2.6 in the early 1970s to around 4.0 in recent years. Suicide rates increase steadily with age, & this pattern did not noticeably change during the period reviewed. The age specific suicide rates of older men & women declined more than the rates for younger people. As in other societies, married men & women have the lowest suicide rates; in contrast, divorce puts both men & women at the greatest risk of suicide. The authors attempt to investigate the social correlates of suicide by analysing the variation in suicide rates among districts in the Czech Republic & selected socio-economic & demographic characteristics of the district populations. Stepwise regression analysis is used to identify three independent variables that explain 50% of the variation in suicide rates among districts: the abortion ratio, the percentage of locally born population, & the percentage of adults with limited education.
