Inhalt: "On exploring the gender imbalances in German higher education, two paths can be deduced from the empirical data. The higher the status, the lower the female participation ratio ('vertical gender inequality'); and there is 'horizontal gender inequality', i.e. with the exception of medicine and economics, women and men choose different subjects. When it comes to deciding on courses of study, men prefer science and engineering, and women prefer the humanities and social sciences, i.e. men prefer to take courses leading to graduation in the German system with a 'diploma', i.e. courses in theoretical mathematics, while women prefer courses leading to the 'state examination' and a teaching certificate, i.e. mathematics education. The ratio of women students of mathematics - a former men's domain - has more or less continuously increased over the past 25 years, without being followed by higher numbers of women in the higher status positions of the academia. With a survey (standardized questionnaire) issued at three German universities, the situation and perspectives of students of mathematics has been explored. A follow-up in-depth survey gave insight into the individuals' experiences during their studies of mathematics. The goal of these surveys was to ascertain whether the increase in female participation in mathematics has led to changes in the issues surrounding gender imbalance. We take an organizational theory approach, arguing with Joan Acker (1992) that universities are gendered organizations where gender imbalances exist and are reproduced on the structural level, on the symbolic level, on the level of interactions and, finally, on the mental level. Our assumption is that gendering also occurs within scientific disciplines. The question that we try to answer runs as follows: once structural processes of gendering begin to diminish - as is the case with mathematics - can we observe processes of de-gendering on the other three levels as well? The paper starts with a short overview on gender relations in german academia, with the main emphasis on mathematics and science & technology. In the second part of the paper, we explain the theoretical framework of the project as well as the methods applied. We then present the main results of our study and finally discuss whether our assumption proves to be right or has to be modified." (extract)

Inhalt: "Using a nationally representative sample of doctoral academic scientists and engineers, this study examines gender differences in the likelihood of having tenure and senior faculty ranks after controlling for academic age, field, doctoral origins, employing educational institution, productivity, postdoctoral positions, work activities, and family characteristics. Logistic regressions show that many of these controls are significant; that biology and employment at comprehensive universities have a gender-specific advantage for women; and that postdoctoral positions, teaching instead of doing administrative work, and having children have a gender-specific disadvantage. Although the statistical methods employed here do not reveal the exact nature of how gender inequities in science and engineering careers arise, the author suggests that they exist." (ICA2)

The research lab: a chilly place for graduate women

Inhalt: "Ph.D.'s in most graduate science programs require that graduate students spend large amounts of time conducting research in science laboratories. As a result, the environment in the research lab is key to the success or failure of graduate students, particularly women. This article is a case study of two graduate women in a chemistry department at a large research university. In-depth interviews, field notes from a support group for graduate women in science, and departmental records were used to examine the relationship between key factors of their work environment and the high attrition rate of graduate women in the department. Analyses of the data indicated that the social climate in the research lab, shaped by the attitudes and behaviors of the women's male colleagues and/ or research advisors, created a 'chilly place' for the female graduate students." Inhalt: "A review of the literature indicated that few empirical studies have been conducted
on either what factors influence or what factors deter women from pursuing information
technology (IT) careers. Much of the information that is available is anecdotal. Several
studies have focused on broader areas of women in science and/or technology; however,
information technology is rarely separated out as a specific field of study, possibly
because it is a relatively new field. Further, most studies have focused on girls
and young women in the K-12 education system. There are few studies of college women
and even fewer of special populations such as re-entry women or minorities. Additional
research on women's career choices relative to information technology is needed."
