Inhalt: "There is a tremendous shortage of information technology (IT) talent in the United States today. Reports suggest that the demand for such talent will continue to increase. Despite the need for qualified personnel, women are underrepresented in this field. Those entering the profession often leave. This article discusses possible sociological factors influencing the number of women entering a career in information technology and their advancements to management positions. The relationship of these variables with perceptions of organizational justice in career advancement is considered. Members of Systers, an on-line forum for women in technology, were surveyed and the results are presented." (author's abstract)

Gender, race, and the college science track : analyzing field concentrations and institutional selectivity
Autor/in:
Mullen, Ann L.

Inhalt: "This study examines the effects of gender, race, and ethnicity on the pursuit of scientific fields of study among college students. It builds on previous research by considering variation among fields of science and variation across institutions in selectivity. The findings reveal that African American students graduating with degrees in science are underrepresented in elite institutions, principally because of their concentration in historically Black colleges and universities. The evidence does not indicate that female science majors are underrepresented in elite institutions. Both groups are concentrated among the science fields with the lowest labor market returns. These findings demonstrate that female and minority students are more disadvantaged than studies of their simple representation in science would suggest." (author's abstract)

Gender and physics : a theoretical analysis
Autor/in:
Rolin, Kristina
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 7 (2001) No. 1, S. 1-8
Details
Inhalt: "This article argues that the objections raised by Koertge (1998), Gross and Levitt (1994), and Weinberg (1996) against feminist scholarship on gender and physics are unwarranted. The objections are that feminist science studies perpetuate gender stereotypes, are irrelevant to the content of physics, or promote epistemic relativism. In the first part of this article I argue that the concept of gender, as it has been developed in feminist theory, is a key to understanding why the first objection is misguided. Instead of reinforcing gender stereotypes, feminist science studies scholars can formulate empirically testable hypotheses regarding local and contested beliefs about gender. In the second part of this article I argue that a social analysis of scientific knowledge is a key to understanding why the second and the third objections are misguided. The concept of gender is relevant for understanding the social practice of physics, and the social practice of physics can be of epistemic importance. Instead of advancing epistemic relativism, feminist science studies scholars can make important contributions to a subfield of philosophy called social epistemology." (author's abstract)

A course in spatial visualization and its impact on the retention of female engineering students
Autor/in:
Sorby, Sheryl A.
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 7 (2001) No. 2, S. 153-172

Inhalt: "Spatial visualization skills have been shown to be important to success in engineering and other technical fields. Unfortunately, the 3-D spatial skills of women often lag behind those of men. At Michigan Technological University, a special course designed to enhance 3-D spatial skills has been offered for several years. Development and improvements to this course have been supported by the National Science Foundation through a series of grants. This article outlines the efforts at improving spatial skills undertaken at Michigan Tech since 1993 and presents results from this project as they relate to the retention and overall success of female engineering students."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Throughout the world men hold the overwhelming majority of top political and business posts. Scholars considering explanations for women's rarity in economic and political elite positions have identified numerous individual and structural factors. Among these factors are informal mechanisms - such as the importance of mentoring or inclusion in powerful informal networks - that might work to maintain male advantage in leadership positions, even when some women have attained them. This paper investigates the putative informal isolation of the small number of women in elite posts. We use data from the Comparative Leadership Study, a survey of over 1200 women and men in equivalent elite positions in politics and business in 24 industrialized nations. Results indicate some male advantage in elite interaction within and across political and economic organizations in these industrialized nations. Still, this research offers some reason for optimism about increasing gender equality in national elites. When women business and political leaders have personal and organizational characteristics equivalent to their men counterparts, their disadvantage in male-centered networks of power is negligible. These rare 'women at the top' appear to be less disadvantaged in their performance and networking in elite positions than in achieving such a position in the first place." (author's abstract)

The contradiction of the myth of individual merit, and the reality of a patriarchal
support system in academic careers : a feminist investigation
Autor/in:
Bagilhole, Barbara; Goode, Jackie
Quelle: The European journal of women's studies, Vol. 8 (2001) No. 2, S. 161-180
Details
Inhalt: "This article draws on data from a qualitative research study undertaken in an old
(pre-1992) UK university with the main aim of investigating the issue of the gender
dimension of academic careers. It examines the idea of an individualistic academic
career that demands self-promotion, which is still used as a measure of achievement
by those in senior positions. However, there is a basic contradiction. While this
idea is upheld, men simultaneously gain by an in-built patriarchal support system.
They do not have to make a conscious effort to be helped by it, thereby perpetuating
the cultural hegemony of individualism. Women are not admitted to this support system,
and if they are seen as needing or wanting to set up their own system, this is viewed
as a weakness. The answer appears to be for women to strategically harness feminist
ways of working in a collaborative and supportive way." (author's abstract)|

Older women in academia : contemporary history and issues
Autor/in:
Bronstein, Phyllis
Quelle: Journal of women's history, Vol. 12 (2001) No. 4, S. 184-201
Details
Inhalt: "Although some older female scholars have risen to positions of prominence and respect
in their institutions and fields, many more have remained in the background or on
the periphery, marginalized by age-related discriminatory practices that are both
pervasive and unacknowledged. This article examines the social and institutional factors
that have shaped the present-day careers and experiences of older women in academia.
It analyzes the effects of institutional disregard and denigration of family role
demands on older women's careers, as well as the age-related stereotyping, exclusion,
and exploitation that have often limited their advancement and their satisfaction
in their work. In addition, it considers the ways in which older women's internalization
of societal and institutional ageism has helped to perpetuate their marginality, and
proposes means by which the combined ageism and sexism affecting the careers of older
women faculty can be addressed." (author's abstract)|
