Inhalt: The transition of early career researchers into academic posts is understood to be a crucial career step and marks a point at which representation of women declines significantly. The research adopts a participatory qualitative research methodology through career narrative interviews and group discussions with women engineers recently appointed into academic posts. It was found that academic careers are ‘hoped for’, but not described as a straightforward option in terms of either securing tenure or future career development. The collective career paths outlined were rarely linear and featured key moments of crisis and self-doubt, culminating in ‘tentative’ career identity formation in the face of gendered career structures. There is evidence of a pre-emptive and continuing uncertainty about the feasibility of an academic career that begins years before embarking on a PhD. The distinctive contribution of the study is the consideration of gendered early processes of forming an academic identity and ongoing collective experiences of becoming an academic.

Inhalt: In many countries, engineering remains a field in which women are highly underrepresented, raising questions not only of equal access, but also of underutilized and wasted potential in engineering talent. The United States is one such country, with women representing only 15% of the engineering workforce. Moreover, even if initially entering the field, women in the United States are more likely than men to leave engineering altogether. This study further analyzes this situation, recognizing that women are a demographically varied group and questioning how differences among them might be reflected in engineering participation outcomes. Emphasizing race and gender, and employing logit regression and marginal effects tests, it considers intersectional configurations to examine probabilities of staying and working in engineering occupations among recipients of engineering degrees. Different gendered patterns are revealed for working in engineering among Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, African Americans, and White Americans. Moreover, gender and race groups present varying retention rates in engineering occupations over time. Findings also confirm inter- and intra-group gender and racial/ethnic differences and disparities that would not have been revealed without attention to intersectional effects on participation in engineering fields.

Inhalt: This article discusses whether or not gender-related disparities exist within the academic fields of mathematics and physics regarding the application of career knowledge and the experiences of disadvantage in relation to recognition of performance, assessment of professional competencies, and integration into networks. To answer this question, primary data was collected with a structured online survey addressing graduates in both academic fields (n=5,174). The article considers a subsample of respondents working at a university or university of applied sciences (n=1,613). Apart from the gender perspective, other factors potentially influencing the academic careers of mathematicians and physicists, such as being in a certain subject, age cohort or having children, are also considered. Some of the key findings are: a) more gender differences occur in mathematics than in physics; b) the experiences of disadvantage in the workplace constitute a cross-disciplinary phenomenon caused by the gender differentiating academic culture; and c) more female than male academics in both disciplines accept constraints or abandon career goals due to child care. /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Normale Tabelle"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;}

Inhalt: "This article focusses on factors for successful careers of female senior researchers in SET subjects from Eastern Europe at German Universities. Grown up in a social system where sciences and engineering was less gender stereotyped as - for example - in Germany, these female researchers who were interviewed in a qualitative study allow a 'view from outside' on the gendered substructure of the German scientific system. At the same time these women are a very specific, highly qualified and selective group of academics who made a scientific career from the level of PhD students up to a leading position in science or a professorship against the background of own migration experiences. In this study the question was investigated if there are differences among these women with regard to their careers and individual traits such as occupational achievements, self-assessments and motivations, in comparison to German female SET senior researchers without migration background. It was explored which potentials as well as barriers were entailed by their migration. Against that background the article discusses, if the careers of the female researchers with migration experiences can be seen consistently as successful, which resources they brought along for their careers, but also which constraints they had to accept. Moreover, these questions were embedded into the analysis of the private lives of Eastern European female scientists with migration experience with specific focus on reconciliation arrangements between family and career. These arrangements are compared with the ones of the German female scientists without migration background who were socialized into the SET profession under conditions of strong gender stereotyping." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article aims to analyze a specific discourse on the careers of female and male chemists in the journal Nachrichten aus der Chemie. The article is based on the assumption that the scientific culture in the field of chemistry frames these careers. Are chemists' careers presented in a gender-sensitive way? And if so, how does this presentation differ? Based on content analyses of the Nachrichten, the study shows that the chemists' careers follow a multi-annual development process which is determined by a chronology of identified career steps. These generally go hand in hand with an increase in prestige or status in the community. A key characteristic of a successful career in chemistry is having to overcome difficulties at every stage in one's career. In conclusion, it is apparent that (1) the careers of male and female chemists follow a career path which is full of obstacles and apparently leaves no space for a private life, without regard to sex and gender roles; (2) female chemists do climb the career ladder, but these women are presented as male/ masculine chemists. (3) The journal does not generally refer to sex and gender; where gender does play a role, it is presented as an obstacle which women have to overcome." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper examines the interplay between intensifying competition among scientific institutions, on the one hand, and career opportunities of young scientist, on the other hand, using chemistry-departments in German universities and non-academic research institutes as an example. Drawing on Bourdieu, the authors construct and analyze the filed in which institutional competition takes place. The power relations in the field are structured by the relative amount of 'pure scientific capital' and/or 'institutional capital' available. In an analysis of professorial appointments they show that the field's structure has little impact on junior scientsits' career opportunities. In contrast to the US, where pervasive institutional competition goes hand in hand with a high degree of social closure in academic careers, the authors find that career opportunities are (still) relatively open in the German case, in spite of growing competition. This openness is due to the special institutional framework that provides the German academic field with a relatively high degree of autonomy. As recent changes in science policy aim to alter the institutional framework, they also jeopardize the autonomy of the academic field." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "The lack of new students in the MINT subjects - particularly the lack of women - is a reason for numerous root cause analyzes. The author reviews this field from the opposite direction. In her article 'Male-dominated computer world - women's paths to informatics' she further unveils this phenomenon by analyzing biographies of women, who already found their way into computer science. In her biographical approach, the author has these women report on their motives for choosing informatics. There are many reasons why relatively few women are studying MINT subjects. As the author points out, social stereotypes play a major rote when choosing subjects. But causes can be found in learning theory as well. Students (and mostly female students) are impaired because teaching in science-related lessons often benefits serial learners, while holistic learners - to which the majority of students belong - have their difficulties with this kind of teaching. And since students use preferences and achievements in school to predict a possible success in their studies they turn away from MINT subjects." (author's abstract)
