Inhalt: The speech act of thanking is one of the fairly neglected areas of research in the Iranian context. The present study seeks to investigate the ways in which this social act is expressed by young male and female EFL learners. To collect the data for this study sixty participants (30 males, 30females) were selected randomly from among the population of BA and MA students of Najafabad university and students learning English in a language institutes located in Najafabad. The major focus of this study was the role that gender and individuals’ level of proficiency might play in the application of thanking strategies. Students were asked to complete a discourse completion test (DCT). They were supposed to read thirteen natural situations, and react to them via expressing gratitude. In order to analyze the utterances of thanking, Cheng's coding scheme was employed. Students' responses were further classified according to the gender and level of proficiency. The results revealed that the females were more cautious in selecting strategies of gratitude. Individuals' level of proficiency was also found to play an important role in the process of strategy selection.

Autor/in:

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article provides an example of psycho-societal analysis of work related learning. Initially a conceptual framework of learning and life experience is established drawing on Alfred Lorenzer and Oskar Negt, and the interactional development of psychoanalysis. A case of learning experience from research into a retraining program for unskilled workers, exposing a very conflictual subjective experience of a traineeship, is presented and commented. The worker's experience is interpreted focusing on the gender aspects of the conflicts, seeing the learning process in the context of a work identity process, which is related to a career shift enforced by labor market transition requiring male workers to retrain for a social work profession which used to be female, and more widely to a reconfiguration of the societal relation between work and gender. The final section discusses the methodological framework for analyzing learning processes by means of interpreting language use. The notion of language game connects the level of unconscious social engagements and level of formal learning and knowledge, and the opportunity for a deeper understanding of professional learning and identity is indicated by reference to one more example." Schönheitshandeln und symbolische Gewalt im Post-Fordismus
Titelübersetzung:Beauty Practices and Symbolic Violence in the Post-fordist Era
Autor/in:
Penz, Otto
Quelle:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article is based on Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice and applies his concept of 'symbolic violence' to discuss the power relations and male dominance in beauty practices. The findings are derived from qualitative research data, conducted through interviews, which show typical class and gender differences of beauty attitudes and beautification methods in contemporary Western societies. One surprising result of the empirical research is that the class differences within one gender category exceed the gender differences in some cases. However, the overall conclusion of the article points to persistent patriarchal power relations - that are represented and constituted in the process of beautification - and to the reconfiguration of symbolic violence since the Fordist era." "Leichtere Beschäftigungen": Geschlechterdifferenz als Leitbild der Forstlichen Arbeitswissenschaft

Autor/in:

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Forestry presents itself as a male domain. As a discipline, Forest Work Science (Forstliche Arbeitswissenschaft) has helped to shape this sphere of work since the 1920s. Content analysis of 'classic' texts from this sub-discipline of Forest Science allow the dominant gender image to be reconstructed as being based on differences in several dimensions. Women and men are described almost as different 'species'. That difference is in particular constructed in relation to physical ability and 'gender-specific' skills. Women are seen as being in need of protection. All these differences normalize the gendered division of work, assigning men the role of breadwinner and women that of being responsible for family work for the man. The article concludes by asking to what extent this differentiation still exists and wherein lie the advantages and disadvantages of switching from difference to diversity as the dominant mode of thinking in (Forestry) Work Science." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Batterer intervention was introduced in the United States in the 1970s as part of the fight against domestic violence. It has proved its worth in the context of the Community Coordinated Response approach. This article presents approaches from the United States that posit more diverse methods, for instance threat assessment or special services for specific perpetrators. Discussions in the United States about the evolution of batterer intervention are presented here since they have so far gone largely unnoticed in German-speaking countries." (author's abstract)

Top down or bottom up?: a cross-national study of vertical occupational sex segregation in twelve European countries

Inhalt: "Starting with a comparative assessment of different welfare regimes and political economies from the perspective of gender awareness and "pro-women" policies, this paper identifies the determinants of cross-national variation in women's chances of being in a high-status occupation in twelve West European countries. Special emphasis is given to size and structure of the service sector, including share of women in public employment and structural factors such as trade union density and employment protection. The first level of comparison between men and women concentrates on gender representation in the higher echelons of the job hierarchy, while in the second section we extend the scope of analysis, comparing women in high-status occupations and low-wage employment in order to allow for a more nuanced study of gender and class interaction. The first analysis is based on European Social Survey data for the years 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008, capturing recent trends in occupational dynamics. Results indicate that in general a large service sector and a high trade union density enhance women's chances of being in a high-status occupations while more specifically a large public sector helps to reduce channeling women in low-wage employment. Thus, equality at the top can well be paired with inequality at the bottom, as postindustrial countries with a highly polarized occupational hierarchy such as the UK show." (author's abstract)
Reporting Romania's 2009 European elections: press coverage and viability of the male and female candidates

Quelle: Eurolimes, (2011) Supl. 3, S 249-262
Inhalt: This article aims to analyze and compare the press coverage of the two most visible male and female candidates for a Member of the European Parliament office during the campaign for the European elections held in Romania, June 2009. The present study examines a month of coverage in the four most influential broadsheets and tabloids in Romania: Cancan, EvenimentulZilei, Gândul and Libertatea. Using a design of content analysis, the results of this paper emphasize that Elena Băsescu received less coverage than did George Becali. There were also found qualitative differences in coverage, attributed to Elena Băsescu’s gender, who was depicted as not being viable to represent the Romanians interests in Brussels.

Widerstand angesichts verleiblichter Herrschaft?
Titelübersetzung:Resistance in the face of embodied gender relations? Subject positions of victimized women struggling for recognition - conclusions for the prevention of violence
Autor/in:
Glammeier, Sandra
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "On the basis of a qualitative study this paper presents a new perspective an violence against women. It argues that women are not only suppressed and hurt by the violence experienced, but also by social constructions that position them as potential victims before, during and alter the violence. The article Shows the struggle for recognition as an important action orientation pattern for victimized women. However, this struggle is limited by means of the embodiment of male dominance. On the one hand this paper describes processes that interfere with resistance against violence and that play a decisive part in stabilizing patriarchal dominance systems. On the other hand it provides ways in which to counteract these processes." (author's abstract)
