Inhalt: "This paper examines the living arrangements of Swedish children from 1970 through 1999 using the Level of Living Survey. Sweden, with low levels of economic inequality and a generous welfare state, provides an important context for studying socioeconomic differentials in family structure. The authors find that, although differences by parent education in non-marital childbearing are substantial and persistent, cohabiting childbearing is common even among highly educated Swedish parents. Educational differences in family instability were small during the 1970s, but increased over time as a result of rising union disruption among less-educated parents (secondary graduates or less). Children in more advantaged families experienced substantially less change in family structure and instability over the study period. Although cohabiting parents were more likely to separate than parents married at the child's birth, differences were greater for the less-educated. Data limitations precluded investigating these differences across time. They conclude that educational differences in children's living arrangements in Sweden have grown, but remain small in international comparisons." (author's abstract)
Vereinbarkeitsstrategien von Akademikerinnen in der intensiven Familienphase

Kroismayr, Sigrid
Quelle: SWS-Rundschau, Jg. 50 (2010) H. 4, S. 434-454
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper deals with the compatibility of work and family for academic women who return to work within a one-year period after birth of their child. To understand the interdependency between employment and family on theoretical grounds, the term 'strategy' should be regarded as being crucially relevant. In this context, the conceptual considerations of Pierre Bourdieu are helpful. He uses the mentioned term to show how actions of individuals are regulated without following rules. People do not follow rules, but pursue strategies to realize their interests. A remarkable connectedness between the implemented compatibility strategies of women and their social background can be determined. Differences become manifest with regard to the extent and comprehensiveness of work, the division of family work between the care-taking couple and the handling of internal crisis resulting out of the compatibility interest of work and family."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "There is a general perception that children show negative effects on the career of women because mothers behave differently in regard to education, the labor market, role-orientation and cost-benefit calculations in balancing family and work life. Do these mechanisms also apply to strongly career-orientated women with PhDs, and how do children affect the careers of male PhDs? We have investigated these questions by analyzing a unique dataset of more than 1,300 Swiss PhDs which includes their complete educational and professional pathways. Using event history models we analyze indicators of occupational success such as wage and professional status. Results show that women with a PhD rarely leave the labor market for a long time and return rather quickly to their jobs after giving birth to a child. Longer absences from the labor market and part-time work are associated with career penalties but there is no direct effect of children on the career success independent of such mediating factors. At the time of our survey there was, in management positions, an equal share of childless women and mothers. Male PhDs benefit from fatherhood by generating higher incomes and moving upward more quickly in management positions. Our results thus indicate that to speak, about children as career handicaps is not justified in the case of highly educated academics." (author's abstract)

Family life in power couples : continued childbearing and union stability among the educational elite in Sweden, 1991-2005

Inhalt: "This article studies continued childbearing and union stability among 'power couples', or dual-career couples. The determinants of these events are analyzed multivariately using longitudinal data on couples from population registers in Sweden, 1991-2005. Power couples are identified using their levels and fields of education, and their sectors of employment. Income and other variables are controlled for. The results show that power couples are more likely to continue childbearing, and are less likely to separate, than other couples. This implies that, despite the expected higher opportunity costs of childbearing and the small gains to specialization, power couples who start families are able to combine career and continued childbearing." Work-life-balance : Individualisierungsprozesse und Reproduktion von Geschlechterdifferenzen
Titelübersetzung:Work-life-balance : individualization and reproduction of gender inequalities
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Despite the heavily debated individualization of social structures, gender inequalities are steadily reproduced. Up to now, applied researches show the period of starting a family as a particularly critical moment in the reproduction and persistence of social structures. It is considered as revealing of the ambivalent relationship between tradition binding structures and processes of modernization regarding genders. Yet it remains often unclear how such reproductions take place. This research examines how five (married) couples organize their everyday life and why certain social structures cannot be transferred into individual patterns of action. These individual processes are analyzed on the basis of the work-life-balance concept and the theory of individualization (by Beck 1986). Through an 'apparent' individualization, social and political issues are forced on to the private sphere. Even if equal opportunities are generally assumed and considered as an accepted norm in Switzerland, it shows that individualization is greatly 'gendered'. The modernized respectively traditional civic models turn out to be the (seemingly) most pragmatic ones regarding the division between paid employment and family and domestic work. Thus, the male is still assumed to be the bread-earner. Genuineindividualized solutions are still in spare number. The apparent variety of options and space of action may therefore be considered as a remote ideal for most people." (author's abstract)
