A history of the present on the "Sportsman" and the "Sportswoman"

Theoretisch/methodisch greife ich hierzu auf Michel FOUCAULTs Konzept "A History of the Present" – einen genealogischen Ansatz – zurück.
Inhalt: The purpose of this article is to disseminate the construction of manliness and womanliness in Swedish sport. Of particular interest is gender equity policy in sport as a new way of creating sexual/gender difference. Michel FOUCAULT's concept "a history of the present"—a genealogical approach—serves as an important tool in this work. Interviews with athletes in their teens (track & field athletics) and texts published by the Swedish Sports Confederation serve as empirical material. When asked about themselves as track & field athletes and their ways of seeing others participating in track & field, the boys often speak about themselves and other boys in a straightforward and unproblematic way. The girls on the other hand, speak about themselves and other girls in a problematic way. This is not an unexpected result, but the conventional interpretation is that it is a sign of gender inequalities in sport. From a genealogical point of view, it might rather be seen as an effect of gender equity policies. Gender equity policy can be seen as a practical strategy of guaranteeing women and men the opportunities to do the same thing—sport, simultaneously performing two distinct and clearly differentiated gendered subjects, to be equalised. As such, gender equity policies might be perceived as an apparatus that produces and regulates sexual/gender difference.

Gender and translocal networking through information technology

Inhalt: "This report presents papers and discussions from the workshop 'Gender and translocal networking through information technology', which took place on February 8th and 9th 2002 at the University of Bielefeld. The workshop was organised by the University's Gender Division of the Sociology of Development Research Centre and was realised in co-operation with the British political scientist Dr. Gillian Youngs, senior lecturer at the Centre for Mass Communication Research, University Leicester, who was invited as special guest and resource person. The workshop was attended by approximately 30 participants. The presentations given by staff members, doctoral students, and diploma students of the research centre were based on empirical fieldwork and raised questions about the fundamental role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the process of globalisation. As one of many possible ways of networking ICTs enable local actors to connect to global cultural and informational flows. The participants focused especially on the active part women play in the new media, given their translocal networking experiences, and the resulting challenges for an engendered analysis of technology and globalisation." Sustainable work - and women? Pleading for gender-sensitive socio-ecological research
Autor/in:
Littig, Beate
Quelle: Work, Employment and Society, 16 (2002) 1, S 111-132
Inhalt: This article deals with the emerging discourse on sustainable work, which has been triggered by the ecologically initiated discussions on sustainable development. It gives a critical overview of the most important approaches to this subject from a feminist perspective. From a feminist point of view many of the current concepts of 'sustainable society' and 'sustainable work' have several deficiencies. The main point of criticism is that these approaches do not consider gender differences appropriately, especially with regard to the gendered division of work. Feminist approaches to the sustainable redefinition of work, on the other hand, tend to be essentialist and therefore have to be looked upon critically, too. Trying to escape both of these pitfalls, the author suggests a gender-sensitive socio-ecological approach to the complex field of sustainable work. This approach views socio-ecological problems as gendered problems and appreciates a transdisciplinary access to questions of sustainable development.
Gender und Informationstechnologien im Kontext der Virtuellen Internationalen Frauenuniversität (Vifu)
Titelübersetzung:Gender and information technologies in the context of the Virtual International Women's University (Vifu)
Autor/in:
Pasero, Ursula; Landschulze, Maren
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 26 (2001) 1, S 4-125
(ICI)
Inhalt: 'The use of modern information and communication technology as well as of internet-based networking facilities is the essential component of the Virtual International Women's University ('vifu'). The 'vifu' is the continuation of the International Women's University which was initiated in the framework of EXPO 2000 and was present at the EXPO for some time. The aim of the 'vifu' is to set up a virtual network of women from more than 130 countries. The investigation, which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and was conducted at the ZiF, provides an overview of pertinent research. Structured interviews were conducted with international experts to gain sociologically founded insights into the development of virtual teaching and learning environments as a field of practice. The analysis focused an the ethnic, social, gender- and culture-specific conditions of developing virtual learning environments, which constitute at present a large field of 'experimenting'. The recommendations that could be deducted from the Interviews show: It is important to take not only structural barriers to online communication into account (e.g. differences in income, education or local infrastructure). In the international context it is the (currently underrated) interaction of these factors with the categories of gender, ethnic group, and geographic origin that must taken into consideration. Internet-based communication in electronic networks should also be prepared for differing levels of knowledge and of expectations an the part of the participants. Maximal opportunities of participation and an 'intercultural' internet competence should be facilitated by using concepts that can be grasped intuitively, by transmitting knowledge (in the phase of face-to-face instruction), by providing surfaces that are easy to use and by keeping requirements of technical resources low while at the same time avoiding high-tech gimmicks and semantic codes. In spite of the high demand of development and coaching involved, learning environments based an information and communication technology can make existing educational options more flexible, can enlarge conventional correspondence courses and promote the institutionalisation of scientific networks. Above all one thing is needed to reach a wide and sustainable participation in IKT applications in teaching: a didactic concept which could be achieved through an intensive co-operation of experts and through an evaluation of the experience gained with the 'vifu'.'
