Inhalt: While scientific challenges raise relevant debates about the ethics of science, the scientific ethos, shattered by post-Mertonian studies, has received neither due attention nor further conceptualizations in view of the transition to knowledge society. On the contrary, in our investigation of Italian women scientists, it appears to have survived as a reference for scientists, even if the context has changed. Indeed, the ethos of scientists is no longer conceivable as exclusive, but is instead seen as open and dynamic in interaction with other symbolic references. Therefore, instead of scientific ethos, it is preferable to speak of scientific habit, including the individual symbolic universe and the social practices linked to the scientific role. In so doing, other habits come into focus and interact. In particular, we investigated the interaction between the scientific habit and the gender habit. We argue for a conflict between two such habits and for the existence of a symbolic violence suffered by women scientists. Lastly, a new dimension of the scientific ethos is defined which is not included in the Mertonian definition: a scientific responsibility among scientists in society. Such a picture could shape a new perspective of re-gendering science in society from the standpoint of women's experience as scientists in the knowledge society.

Deciphering political utopias: unions, female night work and gender justice

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The group discussion is a qualitative method perfectly suited for analyzing attitudes and opinions at the supra-individual level and tracing the process of how they emerge. Psychoanalytic group theories expand our understanding of group processes by adding the dimension of the unconscious: groups, too, display defense reactions and forms of repression. By adding this dimension, we can show how social groups proceed to collectively relegate important issues to the realm of the unconscious. In this way, social defense processes are reproduced in actu. In group discussions involving female union members, the predicament of working mothers comes to the fore particularly clearly. An excerpt from a group discussion illustrates that the women seem to perceive night work as the only realistic solution to the problem of reconciling work and family. Only when we turn to a psychoanalytic hermeneutics of scenic understanding are we able to reveal a repressed conception of life looming behind the paradoxical demand: the desire to overcome the separation of productive and reproductive labor in the lives of both sexes; a desire that can only be achieved if labor unions, too, perceive gender relations as a political challenge demanding their attention. Lane, Laura; Taber, Nancy; Woloshyn, Vera
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 13 (2012) 3, 17 S
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article explores the authors' experiences with negotiating tensions when conducting research. As three female researchers in various stages of their academic careers, they describe their own reflexive accounts of the research process as they negotiated their roles and responsibilities in relation to academic institutions and feminism. They discuss the literature related to responsibilities of academics, the tensions associated with conducting research, and the feminist methodologies addressing gendered issues in the current study. The authors contextualize the research project by outlining their positionalities and the methodology for their reflexive process. They then discuss their experiences of negotiating ourselves within an academic institution and within feminism. They conclude by discussing the importance of creating a feminist space through collaboration within academic institutions." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "Fertility behavior is closely related to other dimensions of the individual life course, which are strongly interrelated themselves. Regarding the impact of job-related spatial mobility, empirical findings show a negative correlation between having children and commuting, particularly for women. Up to now, fertility intentions have not been thoroughly investigated in this respect. Longitudinal studies are lacking, too. In this paper, the effects of commuting arrangements of men and women on the intention of having a child within the next two years as well as the probability of realizing this intention are addressed. The assumption is, that after accounting for other important factors (employment status, level of qualification, type of consensual union, number of children, residential mobility), medium- and long-distance commuting is negatively related to the fertility intention of women and its realization. For men, effects are assumed to be nonexistent or even slightly positive. Longitudinal data from the first three waves of the German 'Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics' (pairfam) are used to test the hypotheses. Firstly, a cross-sectional, multivariate probit-regression (with correlated errors) on the intention to have a child within two years, on being childless and on medium and long- distance commuting is applied. The model shows no significant correlation between commuting and the intention to have a child; it does however show a correlation between medium- and long distance commuting and the probability of women to be childless. Secondly, a longitudinal difference model on changing fertility intentions between panel wave 1 and wave 3 is estimated. For women, a positive effect can be found of interrupting medium- and long-distance commuting or, surprisingly, continuing medium- and long-distance commuting on the intention to have a child within two years. Thirdly, for men and women who reported a fertility intention in the first wave, a longitudinal Heckman-selection probit-regression on the probability of having a child between wave 1 and wave 3 is estimated. It shows negative effects of medium- and long-distance commuting on having a child. Taken together, these findings support the assumption that commuting plays a characteristically different role in different phases of the fertility-related decision process." (author's abstract)

Der Kampf um Anerkennung in Gewaltkarrieren von Mädchen
Titelübersetzung:Struggle for recognition in girls' careers of violence
Autor/in:
Equit, Claudia
Quelle: Soziale Probleme, 23 (2012) 2, S 216-250
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this article, key aspects of girls' trajectories of physical violence will be identified. The discussion will focus on the influence of social institutions such as the family, school and youth welfare services on these dynamics. The biographical dynamics shows that the starting point of an expansion of trajectories of violence can be traced back to far-reaching degradations and denials in institutional contexts. These are also referred to as 'biographical drift', which are related to situational aspects such as the general physical readiness for battle, specific Patterns of action, violent attitudes and a distinctive self-image of girls. The integration of biographical and situational aspects of the trajectories of violence will follow the introduced heuristics of a struggle for recognition. It provides a comprehending access to the dynamic of trajectories of violence in the context of a defense of honor and doing gender based on a conception of the female corporeality." Die Einkommenssituation und -entwicklung Verwitweter in Deutschland
Autor/in:

Inhalt: "The participation of the elderly in social prosperity has been a successful development for a long period of time but lately seems to get stuck. Old‐age pensions of newly retired has been descending for years and real household income in later life is stagnating. Elderly people living in a single household are at an above‐average risk of income poverty, which leads to the assumption that widowed persons more often than other groups tend to live in precarious income conditions. Although the public survivors’ insurance compensates the effects of an income shock due to the death of a spouse up to a certain degree it does not necessarily enable to maintain the standard of living in widowhood. This article therefore addresses the development of the total income situation for widows and widowers. Using microdata from the German Ageing Survey (DEAS), income development can be traced from 1996 onwards, and effects of occupational and social determinants on the level of income are taken into account. Results show an increase of real equivalence income for the widows and widowers over time, with the exception of East German women. Gender, East or West Germany, social class, labour force participation and pillar of old age insurance are pivotal predictors for the income of widowed individuals. Women with low labour force participation over their lifecourse (housewife marriages) tend to have lower income and thus a higher poverty risk when their spouse deceases. The income of widowed civil servants is above average due to their pension provision."[author´s abstract]

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "There is hardly any other area in the knowledge based service sector in which a similar rapid erosion regarding employee status and working condition is taking place than in the academic and non-academic research institutions. In Austria, this development can be traced back to lack of financial resources provided by the state, personnel strategies at universities and declining collective/ trade union countervailing powers. Increasing de-professionalization and decreasing market-power lead to a rise in the propensity to act collectively. Our empirical findings demonstrate that field specific differences also affect upon trade unions' potential for strategic action: at universities (professional bureaucracies), appropriate strategies would aim at setting minimum standards in pay and (permanent) employment for all employees. This, however, cannot be enforced due to a lack of solidarity between the status groups. Market-oriented knowledge production in non-university research would need collective strategies aiming at market closure, therefore establishing a profession with certain entry barriers which cannot be realized at the moment due to heterogeneity in research fields and a lack of collective power." Frauen und Mütter im Deutschen Bundestag : eine explorative Längsschnittstudie

Autor/in:
Brockmann, Hilke
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Are women and men, mothers and fathers represented equally in the German Bundestag? Or does politics remain a male-dominated affair and is that owed to the fact that most women have and raise children, which restrains their availability for the demanding time schedule of a politician? This question is highly relevant, given the current debate about a female quota for leadership positions in Germany's economy. A comparison of legislative terms before and after the introduction of a female quota by political parties shows that indeed the number of women increased, but mothers remain considerably underrepresented. The degree of underrepresentation varies between parties. In the CDU/CSU and FDP it has increased significantly. However, a mother quota has potential advantages and disadvantages which are discussed." (author's abstract)

Autor/in:
Imboden, Natalie; Michel, Christine
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The problem of enforcement of the Swiss equality law almost 25 years after the first official expert report on equal pay was published in 1988, this article discusses the background to the Swiss equal opportunity law. It also sheds light on the enforcement concept compared to other similar political areas. The paper illustrates that the (in their view successful) opposition voiced by employers against more binding legislation results in an extremely weak implementation. Thus, the implementation problems of the equal opportunity law are home-made. The Swiss model is predicated on the intense involvement of interest groups in the drafting and enforcement of legislation. The equal opportunity law is atypical, since the involvement of social partners and contractual policy is structurally not part of the law. The more recent development of a tripartite dialogue on equal pay hints at an interesting approach how key actors - state, employers and trade unions - can cooperate in seeking solutions and in taking responsibility for the achievement of equality of outcome. However, it also becomes obvious that the state must be prepared for regulatory interventions in order to level an unequal distribution of power among the actors." (author's abstract)
