Inhalt: "This article presents quantitative results of a study of 139 academic women in the chemical sciences who participated in a professional development program sponsored by the Committee on the Advancement of Women Chemists. The study investigated variables frequently examined in the vocational psychology of women: approaches to achievement, coping strategies, career advancement, the home-work interface, workplace climate, and mentoring. The article presents and discusses results in the context of unique issues faced by women in scientific careers." (author's abstract)

(ICA2)

Women in science and engineering building community online
Autor/in:
Kleinman, Sharon S.
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 9 (2003) No. 1, S. 73-88
Details
Inhalt: "This article explores the constructs of online community and online social support and discusses a naturalistic case study of a public, unmoderated, online discussion group dedicated to issues of interest to women in science and engineering. The benefits of affiliation with OURNET (a pseudonym) were explored through participant observation over a 4-year period, telephone interviews with 21 subscribers, and content analysis of e-mail messages posted to the discussion group during a 125-day period. The case study findings indicated that through affiliation with the online discussion group, women in traditionally male-dominated fields expanded their professional networks, increased their knowledge, constituted and validated positive social identities, bolstered their self-confidence, obtained social support and information from people with a wide range of experiences and areas of expertise, and, most significantly, found community." The research lab: a chilly place for graduate women
Autor/in:
Ferreira, Maria M.
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 8 (2002) No. 1, S. 85-98
Details
Inhalt: "Ph.D.'s in most graduate science programs require that graduate students spend large amounts of time conducting research in science laboratories. As a result, the environment in the research lab is key to the success or failure of graduate students, particularly women. This article is a case study of two graduate women in a chemistry department at a large research university. In-depth interviews, field notes from a support group for graduate women in science, and departmental records were used to examine the relationship between key factors of their work environment and the high attrition rate of graduate women in the department. Analyses of the data indicated that the social climate in the research lab, shaped by the attitudes and behaviors of the women's male colleagues and/ or research advisors, created a 'chilly place' for the female graduate students." Women in science: can they be disturbing elements?
Autor/in:

Inhalt: "The results from interviews with Swedish women chemists and physicists concerning studies and work in academia are discussed in this article, with an emphasis on working life. We examine the take-up of postgraduate studies, deal with women's experiences of male power and dominance in academia and relate some positive experiences. We discuss the gendered culture of science and the connection between this culture and the organization of domestic work, and end with the question whether women can be disturbing elements and change the culture of science."
