In the Fold Between Life and Art, a Genealogy of Women Artists' interviewt worden. (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this article, I look back in an art/ research experiment of convening an exhibition of women artists and inviting them to a round-table discussion in the context of a sociological conference. The artists who took part in this event had been previously interviewed for a feminist research project, entitled 'In the Fold Between Life and Art, a Genealogy of Women Artists'. The conference exhibition gave the artists the opportunity to appear to an academic audience and present their work while the round-table discussion created a forum for a narrative event where all women were invited to recount stories of becoming an artist. In looking at this event I want to explore questions around the possibilities and limitations of narratives in microsociological inquiries. In following trails of Arendt's theorisation of stories, I explore connections and tensions between social, political and cultural entanglements in narrative research." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: Feminism is a collection of movements which struggles for women's rights. Focusing on gender as a basis of women's sexual oppression, feminist scholarship attempts to establish equal rights for women politically, economically, socially, personally, etc. The Joys of Motherhood highlights Buchi Emecheta's critical view toward colonialism and racism affecting Third world women's lives. Besides this, Emecheta goes further to display African women's invisibility and marginalization-which were out of sight for a long time-in terms of some aspects of Western feminist discourse. Her creative discourse, in this regard, casts further light upon the issue of gender oppression in African feminist study. Hence, this study attempts to examine the way in which Emecheta furthers Western feminist ideology.

Outsiders within: framing and regulation of headscarves in France, Germany and the Netherlands

Inhalt: While women in Europe who wear the Islamic headscarf are generally seen as outsiders who do not belong to the nation, some countries are more tolerant towards the wearing of headscarves than others. France, Germany and the Netherlands have developed different policies regarding veiling. In this paper we describe how headscarves became regulated in each of these countries and discuss the ways in which French, Dutch and German politicians have deliberated the issue. The paper is based on a content analysis of parliamentary debates on veiling in France (1989-2007), Germany (1997-2007) and the Netherlands (1985-2007). Our aim is to discuss what these national political debates reveal about the way in which the social inclusion of Islamic women in (or rather exclusion from) the nation is perceived in these three countries. Our claim is that veiling arouses opposition because it challenges national self-understandings. Yet, because nations have different histories of nation building, these self-understandings are challenged in various ways and hence, governments have responded to headscarves with diverse regulation. While we did find national differences, we also discovered that the political debates in the three countries are converging over time. The trend is towards increasingly gendered debates and more restrictive headscarf policies. This, we hypothesize, is explained by international polarization around Islam and the strength of the populist anti-immigrant parties across Europe.

Inhalt: The present study discussed the influence of one of the eighteenth-century British women of color, the feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, on William Blake. By adopting a biographical and also a comparative approach, the authors tried to highlight the influences of Wollstonecraft's personal life, character, and career, chiefly her A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), on one of William Blake's less-referred-to poems Visions of the Daughters of Albion (1793). The study will help readers to both know Wollstonecraft's prominence and also to grasp more of William Blake and his poetry. The authors also attempted to show that William Blake was part of the early feminism of the late eighteenth century.

Dialogue with immigrant mothers from Chinese and Tamil communities to explore homogenization, normalization, and objectification of their body

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The influence of urbanization, modernization and acculturation processes as causes for the development of body image concerns and eating disorders are documented in the literature. Women exposed to a Western idea of 'beauty' as skinny and thin may be more vulnerable to body dissatisfaction. The elements of Western society that contribute to women's body dissatisfaction are captured and described in Bordo's empire of images (2003) and Fredrickson and Roberts' objectification theories (1997). Both theories rest on the assumptions that women's bodies are seen as passive elements in Western society, and that as a result women often engage in activities that measure, modify, and control their bodies to meet Western standards of beauty and attractiveness. Homogenization, normalization, and objectification have not been studied among immigrant women, nor have similarities and differences been explored across ethno-cultural communities. Participatory methodology informed the data collection process and analysis. A series of three separate parent focus groups were held with each of the Tamil and Mainland Chinese mothers of elementary school children respectively, for a total of six focus groups and 13 participants. Through dialogue, newcomer immigrant mothers were invited to define their cultural idea of beauty and to confront it with the Canadian one. For both Chinese and Tamil mothers, the homogenization, normalization, and objectification of their bodies appeared to occur in similar ways. Immigrant women and their daughters tend to internalize the Western ideals of women's thinness; this makes them self-conscious about their own bodies." (author's abstract)

notwendige feministische Arbeit wird
vernachlässigt, feministische Kunst musealisiert

Inhalt: "Part of the emancipatory force of 1960s and
1970s feminist art was lost along the way because
the gender debate now dominates public
discourse. While feminist action is still necessary,
feminist art is being historicized and
depoliticised. In addition, the popular focus
on gender issues sometimes results in a neglect
of artistic issues. Nonetheless, “neogen

Titelübersetzung:The renaissance of the Jewish community in Poland from women's perspective
Autor/in:
Czerwonogóra, Katarzyna
Quelle: GENDER - Zeitschrift für Geschlecht, Kultur und Gesellschaft, 4 (2012) 3, S 77-91
Details
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The Jewish community in Poland has been experiencing a revival since the democratic transformation in 1989. Proof of that is the growing number of Jewish institutions, educational programmes and the increasing interest in preserving Jewish heritage. However, when analyzed from a gender perspective, this revival is problematical. One of its symptoms is the strengthening of gender biases and hierarchies that keep women in underprivileged positions. On the other hand, Jewish organizations serve as a vehicle of emancipation for Polish Jewish women. This article presents some aspects of women's experience in the contemporary Jewish community in Poland. It is based on qualitative research done between 2006 and 2009 in Krakow and Warsaw and gives a critical analysis of a phenomenon that is generally seen as very positive." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Since cultural scientist Angela McRobbie began publishing her studies, at the latest, female artists working in pop culture have been suspected of commercializing and trivializing feminist issues. The reproach of post-feminism can often be heard in Germany too in the debate about 'old vs. new feminism' in relation to the art of young and successful women. Missy Magazine portrays various pop cultural female artists, whereby there is always some reference to feminism. This article is dedicated to the female theatre-makers portrayed in Missy Magazine and their feminist self-conceptions. The category 'post-feminism' is thereby subjected to a critical examination and is compared to contemporary female theatre-makers' self-image. Drawing on the theory of post-dramatic theatre, the similarities that exist in a young theatre generation are underlined." (author's abstract)

Chambre Close: Monsieur X. und die Frauen
Titelübersetzung:Chambre Close: Monsieur X. and women

Pufalt, Katja

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article looks at the nude photographs in Bettina Rheim’s Chambre Close series and shows that she was wrongly accused of degrading and exhibiting women. Particular attention is paid to putting into perspective the reproach that the women portrayed were objectified and delivered up to the male observer’s gaze. The article aims to show that the impact of Chambre Close is in particular based on the interplay between photographs and the literary testimony of Monsieur X. By combining images and texts, Bettina Rheims and Serge Bramly succeed in creating additional room for the viewer’s reflections, which raises questions regarding the relationship between the artist and the model, women’s self-portrayal, as well as the possibility of a feminine aesthetics and a different type of reception."
