(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The conference focused on theoretical and empirical approaches in postcolonial studies dealing with the terms migration, mobility and gender in public discourse and exploring their emancipatory potential as well as their function as instruments of oppression. The articles and discussions showed that the interdependence of migration and gender requires non-static research approaches to (self-)critically counter the normalization practices and migration policies of the majority society."

Inhalt: "Despite comprehensive care facilities in France, families rely on migrant care work to reconcile work and family life. This paper highlights this phenomenon and pursues two objectives: From an intersectional perspective I discuss how migrant care work is specifically connected to the categories of gender, class, and racelmigration and how it is embedded in the frameworks of the welfare state. Intersectional analysis reveals the construction of power relations and the establishment of hierarchical differences through the actions of the welfare state. Drawing on a normative analysis of care makes it possible to evaluate the care regime in France. For this purpose, principles have been evolved from the inclusive citizenship, sociability, and capabilities approach." (author's abstract)
Finding one's place: shifting ethnic identities of recent immigrant children from China, Haiti and Mexico in the United States

Song, Steve
Quelle: Ethnic and Racial Studies, 33 (2010) 6, S 1006-1031
Inhalt: This article examines the ethnic identity adaptations of recently-arrived immigrant children from China, Haiti, and Mexico. Overall, three main types of ethnic identity categories emerged: country of origin (e.g., Chinese), hyphenated (e.g., Chinese American), and pan-ethnic (e.g., Asian or Asian American). These three ethnic identities were examined to assess their relationships with various social and structural variables. While most of the participants retained their country-of-origin label throughout the five-year longitudinal study, a significant number of them showed divergent paths of ethnic identity shifts and formations. As a whole, only gender, annual household income, and parental educational level were significantly associated with different ethnic identity changes. Analyzed separately by national groups, Chinese participants’ ethnic identity adaptations were influenced by parental educational level, and Haitian and Mexican participants by gender. Potential explanations for the various ethnic adaptations are examined and limitations of the study discussed.

Inhalt: In European public debates, Islam is often described as an impediment to gender equality. By using data from surveys conducted in Germany, we analyze the role of high levels of individual religiosity in explaining Turks' and Germans' approval of gender equality and the way Turkish and German couples share household tasks. Results suggest that for both groups, individuals with strong religious commitments are less likely than secular ones to hold egalitarian gender role attitudes. At the behavioral level, this correlation between religiosity and gender egalitarianism only holds true for Turkish respondents. Furthermore, strong religious commitments contribute to generational stability in attitudinal and behavioral gender-traditionalism among Turks. However, when explaining Germans' more egalitarian gender-related attitudes and behaviors, religiosity turns out to be just one factor among others – and not a particularly important one. Further research is needed to disentangle the different cultural and religious aspects of Muslim migrants’ attitudes and behaviors.
Negotiating the transnationality of social control: stories of immigrant women in South Florida

Inhalt: Historically, young women have been the object of social control, often in the name of filial honor. This article addresses a particular phenomenon of such social control as it is experienced by first- and second-generation female immigrants from Cuba and Haiti who are living in South Florida in the United States. This theme is explored by analyzing the life stories of six immigrants from these countries. The biographical stories of immigrant women reveal how social control operates in the context of transnationalism through controlling processes, internalization of gender expectations, and dominating discourse. It is also argued how social control manipulates and restricts female spaces and operates across spaces in a transnational manner from homelands to host nations. The main conclusion of the study is that a family's relocation to the United States for the purpose of political, social, or economic freedom does not necessarily result in liberation from restrictive social control for young women from such immigrant families. The "transnationality of social control" is therefore understood as the hegemonic domination of female bodies and behaviors through the mimesis of reified and remembered spaces of homelands in host societies.

Reading affect - on the heterotopian spaces of care and domestic work in private households
Autor/in:
Gutiérrez Rodriguez, Encarnacion
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 33 (2008) 1, S 252-277
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The focus of this paper will be reading affect. By working through examples of ethnographic research with domestic and care workers and their employers in Germany from a discursive-deconstructive perspective, the author will show how a deconstructive reading of affect can add to our understanding of (a) 'the speaking subject' embedded within a discursive framework, and, (b) 'intensity' in the encounters between domestic and care workers and their employers. These encounters occur in a 'heterotopian space', a heterogeneous space ruled by the effects of affective bonds. In this space affect denotes a more or less organised experience, an experience which probably has empowering and disempowering consequences, registered at the level of encounter, and not necessarily to be understood in linguistic terms, but which is analysable as effect (Massumi, 1996, p. 237). It is by thinking through the words of those who inhabit this gendered and ethnicised heterotopia that the paper looks at the following questions: How can this encounter be read on the basis of affective bonds? How can we grasp affect as a moment of intensity in these relationships? What can reading Foucault, Derrida and Spivak and thinking through them add to the theorisation of affect?' Inhalt: 'Why are some families scattered over a larger area than others? In this article we use a dataset with the complete life courses of all children from 210 families, originating from the same village in the commercialized North-Western part of The Netherlands. We experiment with multinomial logistic regression on sibling sets to discover the factors behind geographical sibling dispersal. The most important factors turn out to be the survival of the parents, the civil status of the siblings, and the size and gender composition of the sibling set.' (author's abstract)|
