Inhalt: The starting point for this article is the supposition that two significant female 20th century intellectuals, Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel, have so far received only modest recognition for their achievements. The article briefly outlines the remarkable achievements of these two authors and activists and then analyzes the reception of their work. A number of events and processes can be identified which resulted in the misinterpretation and less than satisfactory consideration of their contributions. Theoretical approaches in the fields of political philosophy and political sociology are applied in the course of this analysis. Both the political system and asymmetrical gender power relations contributed in various ways to the false interpretation of the achievements of the two intellectuals. On account of their untimely deaths, both women were unable to build up their academic reputations, for example by means of being visible to and in contact with the public. The article demonstrates the need for further research into the biographies and legacies of Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel, including from the feminist perspective. It also aspires to stimulate this critical discourse.
Fathering and Gender: Transformation in Zimbabwean Transnational Families

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: Migration research in Southern Africa has paid little attention to migrant men's involvement in the family, including their emotional and cognitive work, as well as associated gender transformations. Based on a qualitative study of six Zimbabwean migrant fathers in Johannesburg and three non-migrant women in Zimbabwe, this article argues that transnational migration at once presents opportunities for and obstacles to the reconstitution of gender-normative forms of parental involvement in migrant families. The analysis of the narratives of migrant men and their spouses demonstrates that, although maternal and paternal roles may become considerably indistinct in the context of transnational separations, non-migrant women may emphasize gender-normative expectations in their negotiations with distant fathers when faced with huge responsibilities at home. Such negotiations tend to reinforce gender-normative parenting in transnational split families. (author's abstract)

Terrorist transgressions: exploring the gendered representations of the terrorist

Inhalt: The primary aim of the Terrorist Transgressions network which is presented here was to analyse the myths inscribed in images of the terrorist and identify how agency is attributed to representation through invocations and inversions of gender stereotypes. Although terrorism, its contexts, histories and forms, has been the focus of intense academic activity in recent years, especially in the fields of politics and international relations, cultural representations of the terrorist have received less attention. While the terrorist is predominantly aligned with masculinity, women have been active in terrorist organizations since the late nineteenth century. Particularly since the 1980s, women have perpetrated suicidal terrorist attacks, including suicide bombing, where the body becomes a weapon. Such attacks have confounded constructions of femininity and masculinity, with profound implications for the gendering of violence and horror. The network established that there is a shift away from analyses of cultural representations of the Red Army Faction, which have dominated the literature since the 1980s. New work has emerged examining representations of the terrorist and gender, including investigations of material from the 1970s, recently made available in archives. There also has been a shift in terms of military discourses around the figure of the enemy or terrorist insurgent in relation to visualizing the invisible enemy. Emerging work on colonial insurgencies contributed to a historical understanding of such debates.

Inhalt: This article focuses on 20th-century terrorist phenomena as gendered objects of knowledge produced and disseminated through history books, mass media and state institutions. By taking 1970s West German terrorism as my field of inquiry, this article will critically discuss how a bourgeois understanding of violence as fundamentally masculine has shaped the way terrorism has been represented, conceptualized and historicized thus far. I will go on to problematize the mas-culine gaze of mass media and state institutions and their tendency to objectify the terrorist. Last but not least, I will delineate how mass media and historiog-raphy of terrorism have relied on a narrative structure that pits rebellious sons and masculine daughters against figural and literal fathers, a frame that is overtly masculine and familial. In so doing I will point to blind spots in the study of 1970s terrorism, namely masculinity and the gender of state institutions. My goal is thus to show how not just individual and symbolic, but also institutional facets of the bourgeois gender order influence the way terrorism has been conceptualized and historicized thus far.

Escaping/transgressing the feminine: bodies, prisons and weapons of proximity

Quelle: Historical Social Research, 39 (2014) 3, S 115-134
Inhalt: Assuming that gender relationships are essential to any analysis of terrorism and political violence, I shall examine how the sex-gender stereotypes work, as well as their transgressions. The female military protagonists in the Abu Ghraib media scandal and the women prisoners of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the dirty protest in Armagh (1980) are used as a framework in which issues of visibility/invisibility, independence/ dependence, invulnerability/ vulnerability of women will be addressed. The paper pays particular attention to both the violence against the body and also to the use of the body as a political weapon. From this perspective I analyse both the differences and similarities of menstrual blood as a weapon of proximity in both contexts. The two cases have in common the fact that they occurred in prisons and that women embodied non-traditional roles: soldiers, women political prisoners, allowing for reflection from feminist perspectives on the female inclusion in the citizenship, on participation in political violence and terrorism and on agency and autonomy.

Inhalt: The common assumption within Gender Studies that gender patterns are undergoing a consistent process towards equalization on the discoursive level (but not on the level of everyday practice) is called into question. While there are demanding elements in the public discourses to flexibilize the limits of one's "gender identity" to acquire new potentials, there also persistently exist essentializing, biologizing and anti-feminist positions. This dualistic character is identifiable in the socialization-theoretical paradigm of "self organization" (Hurrelmann), too. Here gender identity is understood as a cultural and trainable reshaping of a natural potential. By means of a psychoanalytically oriented criticism of this particular approach it is shown why the gender relations of habitualized everyday practice are persistent and which unconscious mental functions this practice of Doing Gender has. The essentialistic patterns are as rationalizations closing the gap between "rhetorical modernization"! (Wetterer) and "habitus" (Bourdieu).

Autor/in:
Michalitsch, Gabriele
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Referring to Foucault's concepts of government and governmentality the contribution focuses on modern economic knowledge and, in particular, the dominant definition of 'economy' as elements of gender government. Adam Smith's writings, shaping the tradition of modern economic thought, show how reproduction and femininity are linked and eliminated from the notion of the economic and how, in this way, a masculinist definition and understanding of 'economy' are established. They still determine economic gender hierarchies in the present, since alongside Smith's equation of market and economy profit-oriented competition of (male) individuals became a crucial mode of government characterising the governmentality of the modern state, which is inseparably tied to a 'secret' governmentality based on hidden reproduction following a logic of care and connected to femininity." Reflektionen zu Gender und politischer Partizipation in Asien: Einleitung
Titelübersetzung:Reflections on gender and political participation in Asia: introduction
Autor/in:
Fleschenberg, Andrea; Derichs, Claudia
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The introduction to this issue of femina politica highlights some of the central topics and questions in the broader context of gender and political participation in Asia. While it is impossible to provide an overview of all relevant issues 'in Asia' or in 'Asian politics', some of the cross-national and cross-regional concerns and challenges for women in politics are introduced. The authors then select three sub-themes that they consider revealing for a portrayal of gender and political participation in Asia. These are (a) female parliamentarians, voters, and ambivalences of gender policies, (b) female ministers and heads of states and governments, and (c) international intervention and gender-specific instruments of intervention politics. Some of these sub-themes are subsequently elaborated upon in more detail by the respective authors of this volume. The authors close with the notion of the importance of postcolonial perspectives, which is picked up in an individual contribution, too." (author's abstract)
