Inhalt: Far from accomplishing its utopian plans of transforming society, communism did not turn gender equality into a reality either. This paper moves beyond the common-place approaches that simply underline the failures of this political system and presumes that women experienced communism in very diverse and often ambiguous ways, for public and private roles conflicted more often than not. From among the few individuals who dared to articulate critical thoughts on Romanian communism prior to its collapse of 1989, the present paper recuperates the experience of three women. Members of the urban educated elite, they believed nonetheless in different values and pursued different strategies of expressing discontent with the regime. These female critics of the communist system went beyond personal or group interests, but among the issues of public concern they raised none belonged to a feminist agenda. Yet, these women acted as if gender equality was a reality in Ceauşescu’s Romania: they considered themselves the equal partners of like-minded men, while their male peers accepted them as such, for equalitarian perceptions of genders shaped the public roles assumed by non-conformist Romanian intellectuals. The example of these three women does not prove that communism succeeded in redefining the status of women, but it illustrates how the urban educated social group experienced gender relations then. No feminists in thinking, these three women were so in their behavior. Their criticism of Ceauşescu’s communism was genderless, but it nonetheless strengthened the idea that women are no less than men.

Experiences of migration as a space for reflection: renegotiating gender roles in family relationships

Inhalt: "Based on biographical narrative interviews with three migrant women, the article discusses how migration experiences can lead to a reflection of gender roles. In the three cases, there are various motivations for migration, different family arrangements and work experiences throughout the migration process, and also a change of roles of the women within their families. For the interview partners, the access to material resources achieved partly under great sacrifice and the possibility to compare different life contexts and gender regimes triggered an ambivalent process of reflection on gender relations. Their reorganization of gender relations can be rather incomplete or require strong legitimization upon return; it can also be transmitted as a project for the next generation to complete." Inhalt: Assuming that gender relationships are essential to any analysis of terrorism and political violence, I shall examine how the sex-gender stereotypes work, as well as their transgressions. The female military protagonists in the Abu Ghraib media scandal and the women prisoners of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the dirty protest in Armagh (1980) are used as a framework in which issues of visibility/invisibility, independence/ dependence, invulnerability/ vulnerability of women will be addressed. The paper pays particular attention to both the violence against the body and also to the use of the body as a political weapon. From this perspective I analyse both the differences and similarities of menstrual blood as a weapon of proximity in both contexts. The two cases have in common the fact that they occurred in prisons and that women embodied non-traditional roles: soldiers, women political prisoners, allowing for reflection from feminist perspectives on the female inclusion in the citizenship, on participation in political violence and terrorism and on agency and autonomy.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article provides an example of psycho-societal analysis of work related learning. Initially a conceptual framework of learning and life experience is established drawing on Alfred Lorenzer and Oskar Negt, and the interactional development of psychoanalysis. A case of learning experience from research into a retraining program for unskilled workers, exposing a very conflictual subjective experience of a traineeship, is presented and commented. The worker's experience is interpreted focusing on the gender aspects of the conflicts, seeing the learning process in the context of a work identity process, which is related to a career shift enforced by labor market transition requiring male workers to retrain for a social work profession which used to be female, and more widely to a reconfiguration of the societal relation between work and gender. The final section discusses the methodological framework for analyzing learning processes by means of interpreting language use. The notion of language game connects the level of unconscious social engagements and level of formal learning and knowledge, and the opportunity for a deeper understanding of professional learning and identity is indicated by reference to one more example." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The group discussion is a qualitative method perfectly suited for analyzing attitudes and opinions at the supra-individual level and tracing the process of how they emerge. Psychoanalytic group theories expand our understanding of group processes by adding the dimension of the unconscious: groups, too, display defense reactions and forms of repression. By adding this dimension, we can show how social groups proceed to collectively relegate important issues to the realm of the unconscious. In this way, social defense processes are reproduced in actu. In group discussions involving female union members, the predicament of working mothers comes to the fore particularly clearly. An excerpt from a group discussion illustrates that the women seem to perceive night work as the only realistic solution to the problem of reconciling work and family. Only when we turn to a psychoanalytic hermeneutics of scenic understanding are we able to reveal a repressed conception of life looming behind the paradoxical demand: the desire to overcome the separation of productive and reproductive labor in the lives of both sexes; a desire that can only be achieved if labor unions, too, perceive gender relations as a political challenge demanding their attention. (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article explores the authors' experiences with negotiating tensions when conducting research. As three female researchers in various stages of their academic careers, they describe their own reflexive accounts of the research process as they negotiated their roles and responsibilities in relation to academic institutions and feminism. They discuss the literature related to responsibilities of academics, the tensions associated with conducting research, and the feminist methodologies addressing gendered issues in the current study. The authors contextualize the research project by outlining their positionalities and the methodology for their reflexive process. They then discuss their experiences of negotiating ourselves within an academic institution and within feminism. They conclude by discussing the importance of creating a feminist space through collaboration within academic institutions." (author's abstract)

Geschlechterbilder und geschlechterpolitische Konflikte im postsozialistischen Polen

Fuchs, Gesine

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Since 1989, Poland has experienced strong political conflicts over gender. However, promoted gender order, prevalent norms, and social reality often diverge. How can this fact be understood and explained? Taking Birgit Pfau-Effinger's concept of gender arrangement as a starting point, the article shows inconsistencies between gender culture and gender order in Poland and analyses argumentative patterns in four parliamentary debates on a gender equality law between 1999 and 2005. Ultimately, it is shown that national-conservative discourses on gender models and mothers' roles are over-represented compared to the population. Liberal voices are almost absent and leftist proponents barely develop positive visions on gender equality. The article hypothesizes that past state socialism continues to influence the debate, as actors still rhetorically and politically distance themselves from the old regime. Furthermore, reasons for the gap between the hegemonic national- conservative discourses, actual ways of living and gender policies are discussed." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In the following article the influence of social and political developments on the negotiation of gender roles will be outlined using the example of Serbia. The analysis will focus on the years 1980 to 2009. Even though in socialist Yugoslavia gender equality had been legally confirmed its de facto implementation remained problematic. This will be demonstrated using, for instance, the example of the division of paid and unpaid work. When Yugoslavia was falling apart and a violent war of secession was being carried out in the region the gender-specific public-private division in Serbia was even more enforced by an increasing militarization of society. It was only when Milosevic' was overthrown that the democratization of Serbia could really begin. Since then nationalistic gender roles have slowly lost importance again. Instead the division of responsibilities between women and men has become more and more influenced by the implementation of market economy." (author's abstract)
