Inhalt: While feminists have long recognised the importance of self-managed, alternative media to transport their messages, to challenge the status quo, and to spin novel social processes, this topic has been an under-researched area. Hence, this book explores the processes of women's and feminist media production in the context of participatory spaces, technology, and cultural citizenship. The collection is composed of theoretical analyses and critical case studies. It highlights contemporary alternative feminist media in general as well as blogs, zines, culture jamming, and street art.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The idea of passive-placid femininity and active-aggressive masculinity does not only become evident in traditional representations of male Gothic villains and female victim-heroes; it is also implicitly evident in works of cultural criticism that have become classics. Klaus Theweleit and Elisabeth Bronfen first of all focus on male subject positions, 'male fantasies'. Until today, the idea of women being less aggressive has led to their exclusion from genre theories and affects everyday life, from cliches of devoted motherhood to inequalities in employment. By analyzing characters such as the female serial killer Nike in Thea Dorn's novel Die Hirnkönigin ['the brain queen'], I would like to Show a cultural shift from female victim-hero to female monsterhero. In representations of the female monster-hero, new possibilities of identification become exemplary, as well as the need to rediscuss the relation between gender, genre and Images of violence." Inhalt: Cyborgs in Latin America explores the ways cultural expression in Latin America has grappled with the changing relationships between technology and human identity. The book takes a literary and cultural studies approach in examining narrative, film and advertising campaigns from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay by such artists as Ricardo Piglia, Edmundo Paz Soldán, Carmen Boullosa and Alberto Fuguet among others. Using and criticizing theoretical models developed by Katherine Hayles, Donna Haraway, Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault, the book will appeal to specialists and students of Latin American Studies; Posthuman Theory; and Literature, Science and Technology Studies.
Unpacking feminist consciousness and racial politics: representation and the vanguard in contemporary Cuban visual culture
Autor/in:
Lamazares, Alexander
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In the 1990s and 2000s, sensing that the critical situation had loosened with the fall of the Berlin Wall, post-Soviet aesthetics in Cuba ranged from bloodletting to bitching and from comical to grandiose. How then do women artists in Cuba deal with the contradictions, ironies, ambiguities and social negotiations in Cuban life? This paper will look at how Cuba's artists have participated and contributed to this discourse on gender and racial politics. Now more than ever, the artistic production represents a quasi-independent space in dialogue with the State in their views of the revolutionary experience. Drawing on a variety of experimental and conceptual contemporary Cuban artists this paper shows how they have challenged accepted artistic and political discourse not only in their own society but in the global arena, reversing conventional notions of 'center' and 'periphery' and embodying a provocative, ironic, humorous, and omnivorously critical approach. Their work sheds light on the everyday life of Cuban women living on the Island and abroad, gender and racial politics, sexuality and power, and the discourse of global feminism in a post-Soviet context." Titelübersetzung:Women in Mexico: importance, practice, structure
Autor/in:
Altmann, Philipp
(ICA2)

Inhalt: At the heart of Stripping, Sex, and Popular Culture lies a very personal story, of author Catherine Roach's response to the decision of her life-long best friend to become an exotic dancer. Catherine and Marie grew up together in Canada and moved to the USA to enroll in PhD programs at prestigious universities. For various reasons, Marie left her program and instead chose to work as a stripper. The author, at first troubled and yet fascinated by her friend's decision, follows Marie's journey into the world of stripping as an observer and analyst. She finds that this world raises complex questions about gender, sexuality, fantasy, feminism, and even spirituality. Moving from first hand interviews with dancers and others, the book broadens into a provocative and accessible examination of the current popularity of "striptease culture," with sex-saturated media imagery, thongs gone mainstream, and stripper aerobics at your local gym. Stripping, Sex, and Popular Culture scrutinizes the naked truth of a lucrative industry whose norms are increasingly at the center of contemporary society. Daughters of Tradition: women in Yiddish Culture in the 16th-18th Centuries
Autor/in:
Ramos-González, Alicia
Quelle: European Journal of Women's Studies, 12 (2005) 2, S 213-226
Inhalt: This article focuses on the cultural world of Jewish women in Eastern Europe between the 16th century and the beginning of the 19th century. It reveals the extent to which Yiddish language and literature were a means of gaining knowledge for such women. This is because Yiddish - a Jewish language that developed around 1000 years ago among the Jews living in Ashkenaz - was the language of the people, of ordinary life, of business and social relations, and also of the home and the kitchen. It was the language of female spaces, stigmatized by its ‘humble’ associations with women and uncultivated persons. In turn, Yiddish literature was closely associated with women and a female readership.
Autor/in:
Lipp, Wolfgang
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The family is considered as a 'missing link' between culture and nature, representing the product and vice versa - once existing - the vehicle of an evolutionary process. In containing genetically determined 'natural' components as well as cultural, 'artificial' elements the family opens the view for a nature and culture integrating perspective on evolution. The family serves as the link, mediating within the evolutionary process between prehuman animal hordes and developed, ethnocultural kinship groups, containing transformative processes, e.g., from sex to gender, the 'invention of the father' and the process of emerging kinship."
