(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In an international division of reproductive labour, responsibilities over domestic and care work in many high and middle income countries have increasingly been shifted towards an exploitable migrant work force. Restrictive migration regimes, gender discriminations, and flexible labour markets allow for extreme exploitation and human rights abuses rendering working conditions at times akin to forms of unfree labour. In Lebanon, domestic workers from diverse Asian and African countries experience the consequences of these global trends, while attempts to improve their situation face obstacles constituted by the complex and far-reaching structures of exploitation. However, the agency of migrants and the civil society has recently led to an increase of initiatives aimed at mobilizing and empowering workers, most notably a union for domestic workers established in January 2015. In view of these developments, the article will present the structural challenges migrant domestic workers face on global and national levels and the internal divisions that constrain collective organisation and resistance. Particular attention will be paid to inequalities in the international division of reproductive labour and to the social relations and interests which perpetuate the continuous exploitation of migrant workers making a profound change of conditions without substantial collective and transnational mobilisation unlikely." Causes and consequences of the gender-specific migration from East to West Germany
Autor/in:
Melzer, Silvia Maja
Quelle: Bielefeld (IAB-Bibliothek (Dissertationen), 358), 2016. 236 S
Inhalt: Although German reunification took place 25 years ago, differences between East and West Germany still remain. After German reunification, people migrated from the east to the west because of differences in living standards and the new opportunities available. Silvia Maja Melzer analyses the causes and consequences of intra-German migration, both theoretically and empirically, from a gender-specific point of view and finds answers to the following questions: Which factors are decisive for the relocation of men and women? How does education influence the gender-specific decision to migrate? Who is relocating or commuting more often, men or women? In order to present a more comprehensive picture of gender-specific migration, contrasts are drawn respectively between men and women or singles and people in partnerships. How does the migration behaviour of East and West German couples and singles differ? What financial consequences result from migration? And: Are east-west migrants happier?

Beyond insiders and outsiders in migration research: rejecting a priori commonalities; introduction to the FQS thematic section on "Researcher, migrant, woman: methodological implications of multiple positionalities in migration studies"

Inhalt: This editorial discusses the main strings of debates linking the discussions of insider research, gendered identities and concerns of methodological nationalism and groupism in migration studies. The insider/outsider dichotomy has been discussed in the academic literature for many years and in migration research this usually takes the form of ethnic/national categories. We suggest that researchers now need to think of abandoning these narrow and static views of their participants so as to challenge the dominance of the ethnic lens in migration studies. In this introductory article and in the articles that make up this thematic section, we aim to open a critical discussion of gender, identity, sameness, difference and ethnicity to explore the complex, shifting and multilayered dynamics that under-pin research encounters. Far from the assumed commonalities usually associated with "insider" research, we suggest instead that starting from a position of "uncertainty" challenges taken for granted groupist notions and enables researchers to be open to a wide array of possibilities in their encounters with participants. Zwischen Schutz und Scham? Konfliktbedingte Flüchtlingssiedlungen, Gewalt und Geschlechterverhältnisse

Inhalt: This article discusses how gender relations change in refugee camps and the role sexual and gender-based violence plays. The majority of refugees are displaced due to conflicts, making refugee camps post-conflict spaces. Despite protection and assistance measures, such camps are criticized for prevailing restrictions and the prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence. Based on an empirical study of a refugee camp in Uganda, this article explores and analyses the structures in the refugee settlement, the forms and conditions of sexual and gender-based violence, as well as changing gender relations. It is argued, on the one hand, that diverse interdependent forms of sexual and gender-based violence, as well as victims and perpetrator structuresexist, and, on the other hand, that the violence is linked with the changing gender relations as well as traumatic experiences made in the refugee contexts, during conflict and flight.

Socialization and gendered biographical agency in a multicultural migration context: the life history of a young Moroccan woman in Germany
Autor/in:
Al-Rebholz, Anil
Quelle: Zeitschrift für Qualitative Forschung, 15 (2014) 1-2, S 79-96
Inhalt: "In light of the challenges of globalization, hybridization of cultures, and transnational migration movements worldwide, some central deficits of socialization theory have been identified. As a response to these challenges, the necessity of developing 'biographical socialization research' and a 'subject-oriented socialization theory' are underlined. In this paper, the notion of 'biographical agency', embedded in the social and temporal context of biographies, is proposed to overcome shortcomings of the theories of socialization. Drawing on the concepts of biographical knowledge, biographical work and biographical reflexivity, biographical research can show how individuals develop biographical agency and engage in meaningful social actions within their life courses under the conditions of globalization. On the basis of Samira's case, I will point out the kinds of multiple exclusion/ inclusion mechanisms that operate in multicultural societies, mechanisms produced both by majority and minority groups, and how daughters of migrants can acquire biographical resources through their socialization in multicultural contexts to struggle against hierarchical gender norms, conflicting expectations, and restrictive social sites as well as enlarge their sphere of action." Three women in a city: crossing borders and negotiating national belonging
Autor/in:
Pape, Elise; Takeda, Ayumi; Guhlich, Anna
Quelle: Zeitschrift für Qualitative Forschung, 15 (2014) 1-2, S 39-56
Inhalt: "The major theoretical literature has considered the concept of nation primarily from a macro level. This article explores the question of national belonging departing from an individual's point of view, more precisely from the life story of three migrant women. Migration and transnational practices have challenged the perception of the homogeneity of nations, questioning the idea of fixed boundaries, and showing how different national and social forms of belonging may develop simultaneously through migration experience. Drawing on biographical interviews conducted with three migrant women, Amina El Asri, Gule Yildiz and Zuzana Svitá, the present analysis focusses on the construction of national belonging of the women in an intersectional perspective. Mrs. El Asri, Mrs. Yildiz and Mrs. Svitá originate from different countries (respectively Morocco, Turkey and Czechia). They have different social origins and ages, but share the same sex, their residence in the same city in West Germany and the fact that they all have children. The analysis reveals the profound impact of the socio-historical contexts the women come from on their construction of national belonging, but also of age and of transmission processes to their children. It is mainly through passing on their mother tongue and reshaping their conception of national belonging over time that the women manage to establish strong ties to their children, and contribute, by articulating different lines of belonging, to the redefinition of (trans)nation building processes."

Autor/in:
Straßburger, Gaby; Aybek, Can M.
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses to what extent three different factors influence the autonomous action of individuals who are part of a marriage arrangement: The conditions found in transnational marriages are first compared to the ideal-typical cycle of stages and conditions in marriages in the local context. Then the question is raised to what extent the current legal conditions regulating the immigration of spouses have an impact on the dynamics of transnational intimate relationships and the balance of power between partners. Finally the article discusses whether and to what extent the development of internet-based or mobile communication technologies over the last two decades has changed the way intraethnic marriages are arranged. The empirical point of departure is a longitudinal qualitative study of marriage migration from Turkey to Germany (Aybek et al. 2011). The results obtained from this project are compared with the analyses done by Straßburger (2003a) on intra-ethnic marriages arranged locally in the first half of the 1990s." (author's abstract)

The Male Au Pair: "Doing Masculinity" by Performing Housework and Providing Childcare
Autor/in:
Rohde, Caterina
Quelle: Universität Bielefeld, Fak. für Soziologie, Centre on Migration, Citizenship and Development (COMCAD); Bielefeld (COMCAD Working Papers, 129), 2014. 20 S
Inhalt: Male au pairs responding to the "call for more men" in private and professional childcare have gained some popularity in recent years. Au pairs, both male and female, are positioned in hybrid work settings in that they not only perform housework and provide childcare, but living with families also assume roles of family members. Drawing on the concept of "doing gender", the article compares how the position of male and female au pairs is constructed by allocating specific duties to them, and how men's suitability for au pairing is legitimized. It is shown that, because a gendered division of family work continues to be the prerequisite for "doing gender", male au pairs perform only housework that is compatible with hegemonic masculinity, and that this is inherent in their main duty of functioning as male role models to aid in the socialization of the families' children when the children's fathers fail to fulfill this role.
