Inhalt: "Die Übergänge in Ausbildung (1. (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Transitions from school to vocational training or studies and work seem to be major junctions in lifespan. In the course of societal changes these transitions are getting increasingly unsecure and challenge adolescents. For coping with those high demands educational processes taking place in non-formal leisure activities become more important: They are able to promote personal development and moreover impart qualifications useful for the labor market. The current paper aims to answer the question whether organized leisure activities and cultural activity at the end of compulsory schooling affect vocational goal orientation and transitions from school to vocational training and work positively. Therefore the Resource Model of Coping with Life was applied as theoretical framework. A secondary data analysis wasconducted using the Transition Panel of the German Youth Institute. Three measuring points were integrated in logistic regression modeling: 1) Baseline-survey at the end of compulsory school (N=3922), 2) survey half a year after compulsory school (N=1701), 3) survey five years after school (N=873). As expected small relationships between leisure activities and vocational goal orientation were found. No effects of leisure activities could be found for the transition half a year after school. Hence for the transition five years after compulsory schooling little positive effects could be found for organized leisure activities. The effects persist while controlling for socio economic status, migration background and sex." (author's abstract)

What makes a difference for disadvantaged girls? Investigating the interplay between group composition and positive youth development in sport

Inhalt: It has been suggested that group composition can influence the experiences of individual group members in social programmes (Weiss, 1998). The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between peer group composition in sports programmes and positive youth development (PYD) in disadvantaged girls, as well as to determine whether it was moderated by personal characteristics. Two hundred young women aged between 10 and 24 completed a questionnaire including, among others, the "Youth Experience Survey for Sport" (YES-S) (MacDonald, Côté, Eys, & Deakin, 2012) and questions regarding participants' socio-economic characteristics (i.e., nationality, education, family situation). Multilevel regression analyses were performed to take into account the hierarchical data structure. At the group level, a higher percentage of girls from a low educational track and with a migration background predicted greater PYD, as indicated by higher levels of personal and social skills, cognitive skills and goal setting. Results showed interaction effects between the respondents' family structures on the participant and team levels. The overall statistical models for the different developmental domains accounted for variance ranging from 14,7% (personal and social skills) to 30,3% (cognitive skills). Results indicated that the extent to which disadvantaged girls derive benefits from their participation in sport also depends on the group composition. The interaction effects between the group composition and individual characteristics suggest that when girls participate in a group of similar peers, those from non-intact families will derive more benefits than their counterparts from intact families.
Inhalt: In this article, we explore the efficacy of sport as an instrument for social inclusion through an analysis of the film Bend it Like Beckham. The film argues for the potential of sport to foster a more inclusive society in terms of multiculturalism and gender equity by showing how a hybrid culture can be forged through the microcosm of an English young women's football club, while simultaneously challenging assumptions about traditional masculinities and femininities. Yet, despite appearances, Bend it Like Beckham does little to challenge the structure of English society. Ultimately, the version of multiculturalism offered by the film is one of assimilation to a utopian English norm. This conception appears progressive in its availability to all Britons regardless of ethnicity, but falls short of conceptions of hybrid identity that do not privilege one hegemonic culture over others. Likewise, although the film presents a feminist veneer, underneath lurks a troubling reassertion of the value of chastity, masculinity, and patriarchy. Bend it Like Beckham thus provides an instructive case study for the potential of sport as a site of social inclusion because it reveals how seductive it is to imagine that structural inequalities can be overcome through involvement in teams.

Experiences and perceptions of young adults with physical disabilities on sports

Inhalt: People with disabilities seldom get a chance to voice their opinions on their sport experiences. A deeper understanding of the context-related experiences of sport is a prerequisite for teachers and leaders to be able to provide adequate, inclusive and meaningful activities. The aim of this qualitative case study was to examine how young people with disabilities made sense of sport, within both the compulsory school system and the voluntary sports movement. The study involved 10 young adults (aged 16 to 29 years) with disabilities, five males and five females. All the participants had rich experiences of sport. An inductive approach to qualitative content analysis of semi-structured interviews was used to enable individuals to explain and give meaning to their experiences of sport including those pertaining to gender and inclusion. The findings illustrated that dominating gender and ability norms influenced the interviewees' understanding of themselves in relation to sport; as a consequence, some of the female interviewees had a more diverse, sometimes contradictory experience of sport than the male interviewees. The basic premise of this study is that researchers can develop more insightful understandings of inclusion by studying the subjective meanings that are constructed by people with disabilities in their sport experiences.

Inhalt: In the burgeoning field of sport-for-development, the benefits of participation for youths have been widely discussed. However, it has also been noted that some youth are excluded based on ability, location, economic means, and gender and are thus not participating. We considered that this might be an issue of ideologies. Thus, it was the purpose of this study to use a critical occupational approach to explore how sport-for-development ideologies in Zambia shape the participation of young people. Drawing on empirical data gathered from five case studies of sport-for-development organizations in Lusaka, Zambia, three themes were identified that describe ideological beliefs within the Zambian sport-for-development context. The first, sport benefits all, contributed to the practice of sport being used uncritically as an activity for all youth. The second, good people do, perpetuated what were considered acceptable activities that boys and girls could do in the local context. Finally, a belief that sport is the way out privileged boys who play football as well as athletic non-disabled boys in opposition to girls, poor youths, rural youths, and girls and boys with disabilities. Together these beliefs have contributed to successes (careers in sport) and shortcomings (occupational injustices) associated with the sport-for-development phenomenon. (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The critical discourse studies the rote of the public debate on 'homosexuality and football' in Germany. The analysis is based on the fact that the football dispositive is male-centred. Furthermore the football dispositive taboos male homosexuality through certain discourses and practices. From the point of view of a sociology of gender it was discovered that the constant medial 'request for an outing' equates a 'request for order': homosexual football players are expected to confess their sexual orientation in order to be identified and alienated." Inhalt: "Starting from the assumption that cultural historical analyses can help our understanding of changes in life cycles and life courses, this article explores the way in which a specific socio-cultural phenomenon, sport, changed and defined the life courses of women in pre-war Netherlands. While similar questions are often being researched from a psychological or sociological and hence short-term perspective, here a long term and biographical analysis is being applied. Focusing on a group of medal winning participants in the Olympic Games, the leading question is whether their physical talent allowed these women to pursue a different life course. A second question is how their international careers matched with dominant cultural life scripts, which stated that young women should prepare to become wives, mothers and homemakers. It can be concluded that the presented biographies reveal an ambiguous reality. On the one hand, sporting successes opened up several possibilities for the women concerned, who became public figures and their country's first national female sport heroes. Thus, they embodied the beginning of a new cultural feminine ideal that opened up existing scripts. Their personal life course underwent profound changes as well, albeit of a confusing nature. All coming from lower class families, they saw their social careers set off because of their swimming, but also getting disrupted because of it. Sport-related disagreeing life scripts were tensional rather than advantageous. At least in hindsight, the women blamed their sporting career for the strenuous course their lives took." Inhalt: "Football likely presents itself as a modern subsystem of society which provides 'unifying power' and values like 'fairplay, cooperation, care, sympathy, broad-mindedness and solidarity' (bundesliga-stiftung.de). In contrast it can be considered as one of the most unprogressive bastions in modern Western societies due to everyday violence, the latent racism and discrimination of women and homosexuals. This ambivalence makes football a fascinating domain of empirical social research. For that purpose our research project Fußball intersektional carried out since 2007, has focused on the interaction of different inequality structures in the football microcosm. We conducted nine group discussions where we used visual stimuli in the form of a poster instead of key questions. This article shows that in qualitative social research, the use of visual media is not only appropriate when discussing difficult and sensitive topics but also an efficient means of counteracting the problem of reification, which means the introduction of preliminary considerations and personal attitudes." Socio-economic inequalities in physical activity practice among Italian children and adolescents: a cross-sectional study

Inhalt: Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate whether socio-economic inequalities in the practice of physical activity existed among children and adolescents, using different indicators of socio-economic status (SES). Subjects and methods: Data were derived from the Italian National Health Interview Survey carried out in 2004–2005, which examined a large random sample of the Italian population using both an interviewer-administered and a self-compiled questionnaire. This study was based on a sample of 15,216 individuals aged 6–17 years. The practice of physical activity was measured on the basis of questions regarding frequency and intensity of activity during leisure time over the past 12 months. Parents’ educational and occupational level, as well as family’s availability of material resource, were used as indicators of SES. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the contribution of each SES indicator to the practice of physical activity, adjusting for potential confounding factors. The results of the regression models are expressed as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: About 64% of children and adolescents in the sample declared that they participated in moderate or vigorous physical activity at least once a week. After adjustment for gender, age, parental attitudes towards physical activity and geographical area, the practice of physical activity increased with higher parental educational and occupational level and greater availability of material resources. Children and adolescents whose parents held a middle or high educational title were 80% more likely to practice moderate or vigorous physical activity than subjects whose parents had a lower level of education (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.40–2.33), while subjects with unemployed parents had an odds of practicing moderate or vigorous physical activity 0.43 times that of those children whose parents belonged to the top job occupation category (administrative/professionals). Socio-economic differences were about the same when the practice of vigorous physical activity only was considered instead of that of moderate or vigorous physical activity. Conclusion: Interventions that promote the practice of physical activity, and especially those aimed at the wider physical and social environment, are strongly needed to contrast socio-economic differences in physical activity among children and adolescents.

(ICF2)
