A Genderless Protest: Women Confronting Romanian Communism
Autor/in:
Petrescu, Cristina
Quelle: Annals of the University of Bucharest / Political science series, 16 (2014) 2, S 79-101
Inhalt: Far from accomplishing its utopian plans of transforming society, communism did not turn gender equality into a reality either. This paper moves beyond the common-place approaches that simply underline the failures of this political system and presumes that women experienced communism in very diverse and often ambiguous ways, for public and private roles conflicted more often than not. From among the few individuals who dared to articulate critical thoughts on Romanian communism prior to its collapse of 1989, the present paper recuperates the experience of three women. Members of the urban educated elite, they believed nonetheless in different values and pursued different strategies of expressing discontent with the regime. These female critics of the communist system went beyond personal or group interests, but among the issues of public concern they raised none belonged to a feminist agenda. Yet, these women acted as if gender equality was a reality in Ceauşescu’s Romania: they considered themselves the equal partners of like-minded men, while their male peers accepted them as such, for equalitarian perceptions of genders shaped the public roles assumed by non-conformist Romanian intellectuals. The example of these three women does not prove that communism succeeded in redefining the status of women, but it illustrates how the urban educated social group experienced gender relations then. No feminists in thinking, these three women were so in their behavior. Their criticism of Ceauşescu’s communism was genderless, but it nonetheless strengthened the idea that women are no less than men.

The Electoral System and Women’s Political Representation in Romania
Autor/in:
Petrescu, Alexandra
Quelle: European Quarterly of Political Attitudes and Mentalities, 2 (2013) 2, S 1-8
Inhalt: Taking into account the influence of mentalities and attitudes on the construction of the political imaginary, the author is questioning the possibility if the parity or the quotas can become in the future a source of inspiration for the political representation of women in Romania. This essay analyses two francophone models, France and Belgium, where the quotas and parity are applied, and which represented during the last two centuries sources of inspiration for the electoral and constitutional framework of Romania.
From women's quota to "women's politics": the impact of gender quotas on political representations and practices in the Pakistani National Parliament
Autor/in:
Dutoya, Virginie
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In 2002, the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced that 17% of the seats in the National Assembly and Senate would be reserved to women. Though quotas for women were not a new phenomenon in Pakistan, they had never reached this level. Moreover, after they had been dropped in 1988, the representation of women in the Pakistani parliament fell under 3%. Thus the entry of more than 80 women in Parliament (about 20% of all MPs) in 2002 was considered as a game changer in Pakistani politics, and Musharraf's decision was generally praised by activists of the women's movement. The article tries to evaluate how women construct new ways to do politics in their discourses and practices, and what place gender norms and representations occupy in this process. While recognizing women's agency though quota regulations, it is also argued that a distinctive demarcation of 'women's politics' can bring about constraints, contribute to women's marginalization in the political field, and strengthen gender stereotypes." Rekrutierungsprozesse österreichischer Regierungsmitglieder im Geschlechtervergleich
Titelübersetzung:Recruitment processes of Austrian members of government in a gender comparative perspective
Autor/in:
Schwediauer, Veronika
Quelle: SWS-Rundschau, 52 (2012) 1, S 47-68
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political recruitment processes represent products of the societal and political power relations, which bear gendered structures. A gender-comparative analysis of political recruitment processes is apt to uncover these gendered power relations. A theoretical perspective on power is completely absent in the hitherto produced literature on political recruitment (and gender). Bourdieu's power-centered concepts of field and capital are valuable tools to bridge this gap and to endeavor a gender-comparative (power) analysis of recruitment processes. This article investigates the capital forms and the political careers of the Austrian members of government and their gender-specific effects from the time frame of 1966 to 2006." (author's abstract)

Einstellungen der ÖsterreicherInnen zu Familie, Familienpolitik und dem Geschlechterverhältnis: Forschungsergebnisse des 'Population Policy Acceptance Survey' (PPA)
Titelübersetzung:Attitudes of Austrians towards family, family policy and the relationship between the sexes: results from the 'Population Policy Acceptance Survey' (PPA)
Autor/in:
Tazi-Preve, Irene Marjam
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'This contribution is based on the presentation of the Austrian research project 'Population Policy Acceptance Survey' (PPA II), a questionnaire about demographic topics. In 2001, approx. 2.000 persons aged 20-65 were interviewed about their attitudes towards family, family policy and the relationship between the sexes in Austria. Results about the acceptance of non-traditional forms of living together show that marriage still retains a high level of social approval. At the same time, the increase in non-marital living alternatives is met with growing approval by respondents. Further results show that there is basically still the traditional division of labour within the families and that a division of household tasks disadvantaging women has a negative effect on the desire to have children. While Austria does not explicitly pursue a pro-natalist policy, the increased endowment of family-policy measures nevertheless aims at increasing the birth rate. However, when verifying this relationship, no empirical evidence could be found for any decisive influence of increased support allowances on the willingness to have a(nother) child. Furthermore our analysis shows that the sensibility of women for unequal treatment on the job is very pronounced and that they have great confidence in measures to promote the role of women.'
