Inhalt: While women in Europe who wear the Islamic headscarf are generally seen as outsiders who do not belong to the nation, some countries are more tolerant towards the wearing of headscarves than others. France, Germany and the Netherlands have developed different policies regarding veiling. In this paper we describe how headscarves became regulated in each of these countries and discuss the ways in which French, Dutch and German politicians have deliberated the issue. The paper is based on a content analysis of parliamentary debates on veiling in France (1989-2007), Germany (1997-2007) and the Netherlands (1985-2007). Our aim is to discuss what these national political debates reveal about the way in which the social inclusion of Islamic women in (or rather exclusion from) the nation is perceived in these three countries. Our claim is that veiling arouses opposition because it challenges national self-understandings. Yet, because nations have different histories of nation building, these self-understandings are challenged in various ways and hence, governments have responded to headscarves with diverse regulation. While we did find national differences, we also discovered that the political debates in the three countries are converging over time. The trend is towards increasingly gendered debates and more restrictive headscarf policies. This, we hypothesize, is explained by international polarization around Islam and the strength of the populist anti-immigrant parties across Europe.
Visions of the daughters of Albion: the influence of Mary Wollstonecraft's life and career on William Blake

Abbasi, Pyeaam; Keshavarzian, Ramin
Quelle: International Letters of Social and Humanistic Sciences, (2014) 40, S 48-63
Inhalt: The present study discussed the influence of one of the eighteenth-century British women of color, the feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, on William Blake. By adopting a biographical and also a comparative approach, the authors tried to highlight the influences of Wollstonecraft's personal life, character, and career, chiefly her A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), on one of William Blake's less-referred-to poems Visions of the Daughters of Albion (1793). The study will help readers to both know Wollstonecraft's prominence and also to grasp more of William Blake and his poetry. The authors also attempted to show that William Blake was part of the early feminism of the late eighteenth century.

Autor/in:
Friauf, Heike
Quelle: GENDER - Zeitschrift für Geschlecht, Kultur und Gesellschaft, 4 (2012) 1, S 54–74
Inhalt: "Die politische Emanzipationskraft der in den
1960er und 1970er Jahren entwickelten femi
nis tischen Kunst ist heute teilweise der
Genderdebatte zum Opfer gefallen. Weiterhin
notwendige feministische Arbeit wird
vernachlässigt, feministische Kunst musealisiert
und entpolitisiert. Außerdem führt die
populäre Beschäftigung mit Genderfragen
mit unter zur Vernachlässigung künstlerischer
Fragen. Dabei bietet das „Neogeschlecht“
spannenden Stoff für künstlerische Selbstrepräsentation.
Die Grenzen zwischen den
Genres werden aufgelöst, auch die Grenzen
zwischen realem Abbild und Wunschprojektion,
klassischem Selbstporträt und gendersensitiver
Selbstinterpretation verfl ießen." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Part of the emancipatory force of 1960s and
1970s feminist art was lost along the way because
the gender debate now dominates public
discourse. While feminist action is still necessary,
feminist art is being historicized and
depoliticised. In addition, the popular focus
on gender issues sometimes results in a neglect
of artistic issues. Nonetheless, “neogen
der” offers exciting material for artistic
self-representation. The boundaries between
genres are melt away as do the distinctions
between realistic image and desired icon,
classic self-portrait and gender-sensitive selfinterpretation." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:The renaissance of the Jewish community in Poland from women's perspective
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The Jewish community in Poland has been experiencing a revival since the democratic transformation in 1989. Proof of that is the growing number of Jewish institutions, educational programmes and the increasing interest in preserving Jewish heritage. However, when analyzed from a gender perspective, this revival is problematical. One of its symptoms is the strengthening of gender biases and hierarchies that keep women in underprivileged positions. On the other hand, Jewish organizations serve as a vehicle of emancipation for Polish Jewish women. This article presents some aspects of women's experience in the contemporary Jewish community in Poland. It is based on qualitative research done between 2006 and 2009 in Krakow and Warsaw and gives a critical analysis of a phenomenon that is generally seen as very positive." (author's abstract)
Der Postfeminismus-Vorwurf: Beobachtungen zum feministischen Selbstkonzept junger Theaterkünstlerinnen und Journalistinnen am Beispiel des Missy Magazine
Titelübersetzung:The reproach of postfeminism: observations on feminist self-conceptions among young theatre artists and journalists in Missy Magazine
Autor/in:
Gerdes, Gesche
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Since cultural scientist Angela McRobbie began publishing her studies, at the latest, female artists working in pop culture have been suspected of commercializing and trivializing feminist issues. The reproach of post-feminism can often be heard in Germany too in the debate about 'old vs. new feminism' in relation to the art of young and successful women. Missy Magazine portrays various pop cultural female artists, whereby there is always some reference to feminism. This article is dedicated to the female theatre-makers portrayed in Missy Magazine and their feminist self-conceptions. The category 'post-feminism' is thereby subjected to a critical examination and is compared to contemporary female theatre-makers' self-image. Drawing on the theory of post-dramatic theatre, the similarities that exist in a young theatre generation are underlined." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Chambre Close: Monsieur X. and women
Autor/in:
Pufalt, Katja
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article looks at the nude photographs in Bettina Rheim’s Chambre Close series and shows that she was wrongly accused of degrading and exhibiting women. Particular attention is paid to putting into perspective the reproach that the women portrayed were objectified and delivered up to the male observer’s gaze. The article aims to show that the impact of Chambre Close is in particular based on the interplay between photographs and the literary testimony of Monsieur X. By combining images and texts, Bettina Rheims and Serge Bramly succeed in creating additional room for the viewer’s reflections, which raises questions regarding the relationship between the artist and the model, women’s self-portrayal, as well as the possibility of a feminine aesthetics and a different type of reception." The changing face of the sacrificial Romanian woman in cinematographic discourses
Autor/in:
Andreescu, Florentina
Quelle: Studia Politica: Romanian Political Science Review, 11 (2011) 4, S 661-674
Inhalt: Taking as a starting point one of the most relevant Romanian/Eastern European myths, Craftsman Manole, the article examines the female ideal set forth by Romanian filmography before and after 1989. During communism the female ideal had two variants: heroine worker and heroine mother. In the films produced after 1989, we identify a topic that, though not having changed its position within the structure of fantasy, has lost its grip on female desire and consent. The sacrifice performed by women now lacks its moral foundation and is portrayed as an action performed at the behest of a selfish, obscene patriarchal interest. The female sacrifice, performed without a moral justification, becomes a traumatic event. The female ideal after the revolution has two versions: the traditional role of the wife or daughter and the disaffiliated role of a prostitute.
Das Profil der Täterin: neue Monsterheldinnen im Horrorgenre
Titelübersetzung:The female culprit's profile: new female monster-heroes in the horrorgenre
Autor/in:
Miess, Julia
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The idea of passive-placid femininity and active-aggressive masculinity does not only become evident in traditional representations of male Gothic villains and female victim-heroes; it is also implicitly evident in works of cultural criticism that have become classics. Klaus Theweleit and Elisabeth Bronfen first of all focus on male subject positions, 'male fantasies'. Until today, the idea of women being less aggressive has led to their exclusion from genre theories and affects everyday life, from cliches of devoted motherhood to inequalities in employment. By analyzing characters such as the female serial killer Nike in Thea Dorn's novel Die Hirnkönigin ['the brain queen'], I would like to Show a cultural shift from female victim-hero to female monsterhero. In representations of the female monster-hero, new possibilities of identification become exemplary, as well as the need to rediscuss the relation between gender, genre and Images of violence."
