Inhalt: "Despite near numeric parity in graduate schools, women and men in science and mathematics may not perceive the same opportunities for career success. Instead, female doctoral students' career ambitions may often be influenced by perceptions of irreconcilable conflicts between personal and academic goals. This article reports the results of a career goals survey of math and science doctoral students at the University of California, Davis. Fewer women than men began their doctoral programs seeking academic research careers. Of those who initially favored academic research, twice as many women as men downgraded these ambitions during graduate school. Women were more likely to feel geographically constrained by family ties and to express concern about balancing work and family, long work hours, and tenure clock inflexibility. These results partially explain why the percentage of women in academic applicant pools is often well below the number of Ph.D. recipients. The current barriers to gender equity thus cannot be completely ameliorated by increasing the number of women in the pipeline or by altered hiring practices, but changes must be undertaken to make academic research careers more flexible, family friendly, and attractive to women."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper analyses gendering processes in research organizations. The focus is on the gender subtext of organizations. How do organizational structural arrangements and negotiation processes generate gender relations? How are these arrangements interrelated with the individual qualification and motivation of scientific personnel? Which impact do they have on career chances of men and women? The most striking results of our comparative case study of three research organizations of the 'Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz' (WGL) is the misfit between organizational conditions, career tracks and individual career aspirations. Both, men and women, face this misfit, which nevertheless is heavily gendered. The analysis of the interplay of organizational micro-politics highlights these gendering processes. Especially lack of individual power of defining the relationship of occupational and the so-called private sphere reproduces disadvantages of women. Heterogeneous research arrangements and diverse organizational demands facilitate gender equality." (author's abstract)

The role of interest in understanding the career choices of female and male college students
Autor/in:
Morgan, Carolyn; Isaac, James D.; Sansone, Carol
Quelle: Sex roles : a journal of research, Vol. 44 (2001) No. 5-6, S. 295-320
Inhalt: "Mismatch between college students' work goals and perceived goal affordances of physical/ mathematical science careers may help explain gender differences in interest and career choice. In Study 1, the desire for interesting work was cited by most students in the sample (89% White, 6% Asian, 5% other). Compared to men, women reported interpersonal work goals more and high pay and status work goals less frequently. In Study 2, students (79% White, 12% Latino, 5% Asian, 4% other, predominantly middle class) perceived physical/ mathematical science careers as less likely to afford interpersonal goals and more likely to afford high pay and status goals compared to other careers. Interpersonal goal affordances predicted greater interestingness for all careers, whereas high pay and status goal affordances predicted greater interestingness only for physical/ mathematical sciences. Interestingness positively predicted likelihood of career choice." (author's abstract)
Geschlechtliche Normierung von Studienfächern und Karrieren im Wandel

Quelle: Historical Social Research : the official journal of Quantum and Interquant ; an international journal for the application of formal methods to history, Vol. 25 (2000) No. 2, S. 23-53
(ICA)
Inhalt: "Common wisdom holds that from the beginning women entered some academic fields such as the humanities and avoided others for example physics or mathematics. Developments in Germany up to the 1930s contradict this assumption: In the natural sciences and mathematics, the percentage of female students was higher than the average percentage of female students in all other academic fields. What contributed to, what caused this unexpected distribution? How can we explain the discontinuities in the long-term developments of female students' relative frequencies in specific academic subjects? Some answers to these questions are discussed in this study, containing results of a current research project financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The basic assumptions refer to the theory of doing gender: This theory claims that what is characterized as typically male or female is historically variable and constructed according to specific cultural and social contexts. Thus essentialism is negated. The main data base of this project are educational statistics of German universities. Our statistical analyses (e.g. loglinear analysis) and data from other sources show interrelated effects of the development of girls' secondary schools, their preparations for university studies, chances on the labour market and social status on the subjects of study as well as an professional careers. New academic fields like social sciences and economics became gendered very quickly, resulting in segregation of careers by sex. The cultural and educational system and even official recommendaeions constructed gender stereotypes of professions. These stereotypes increasingly influenced female pupils in their career patterns during the 1930s. At that time employment chances in some professions were drastically reduced and administrative restrictions against women were introduced. This occured even before the Nazis seized power."
(Autorenreferat)
