Die reale Begegnung: Kommunikationsmodi und
Medieninfrastrukturnutzung in der Frauenbewegung Se Non Ora Quando
Autor/in:
Näser-Lather, Marion
Quelle: kommunikation @ gesellschaft, 16 (2015) , 25 S
(Autorenreferat)

It's a Man's Wikipedia? Assessing Gender Inequality in an Online Encyclopedia

Inhalt: Wikipedia is a community-created encyclopedia that contains information about notable people from different countries, epochs and disciplines and aims to document the world's knowledge from a neutral point of view. However, the narrow diversity of the Wikipedia editor community has the potential to introduce systemic biases such as gender biases into the content of Wikipedia. In this paper we aim to tackle a sub problem of this larger challenge by presenting and applying a computational method for assessing gender bias on Wikipedia along multiple dimensions. We find that while women on Wikipedia are covered and featured well in many Wikipedia language editions, the way women are portrayed starkly differs from the way men are portrayed. We hope our work contributes to increasing awareness about gender biases online, and in particular to raising attention to the different levels in which gender biases can manifest themselves on the web.
Men eat on Mars, Women on Venus? An Empirical Study of Food-Images

Wagner, Claudia; Aiello, Luca Maria
Quelle: ACM Web Science Conference (WebSci '15); New York, 2015.
Inhalt: Culinary preferences contribute significantly to the sense of ourself [2]. While gender, race, sexuality and ethnicity describe our "major identity", preferences in music, style and food define our "minor identity". However, we find that only certain parts of them can be explained by gender-specific differences in the food consumption behavior, while other parts can be better explained by the media portrayal of food consumption.
Was bleibt?
Titelübersetzung:Chances and limits of a queer-feminist online-archive
Autor/in:
Koch, Ulrike; Zschokke, Anna
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Every day new blog posts, tweets, images, and videos appear, which take on social issues, discuss them from a (queer-)feminist viewpoint and initiate debates within (queer-)feminism. The resulting digital knowledge makes the lively discussions within the (queer-)feminist scene visible and cannot be separated from that scene anymore. However, most (queer-)feminist digital content is currently not recorded for posterity and thus at risk of disappearance and oblivion. Therefore the question of a (queer-)feminist meta-archive is posed by the authors, more precisely an archive which records digital content and makes it accessible to persons interested. This article presents a semi-utopian concept of how to organize and establish a meta-archive that could serve varying needs." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:Regulation of online-harassment: perspectives of feminist web politics on violent communication on the Internet
Autor/in:
Hentschel, Gitti; Schmidt, Francesca
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Communication is a key element of the internet. Violent communication has relevant effects on queer feminist internet activism. This article focuses on options and necessities of regulating such forms of violent anti-feminist and racist communication. How to prevent or to stop violent online-communication? Which resources of regulation in democratic states or internationally are already available? To what extent can the feminist achievements of the 1970/80s be revived?" (author's abstract)
Öffentlichkeiten im Internet: zwischen Feminismus und Antifeminismus
Titelübersetzung:Publics and the web: between feminism and antifeminism
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The concept of a public sphere ("Öffentlichkeit") has been of central concern to Gender Studies. Alongside the feminist critique of dominance changes of media and communication technologies have led to a reconsideration of the concept. Taking the Three-Layer-Model of the public sphere as the starting-point Ricarda Drüeke and Elisabeth Klaus examine how publics are constituted in the Internet, discuss the consequences for their formation and ponder their meaning for the processes of social debate and cultural understanding. The authors explore the prominent German antisexist twitter-debate #aufschrei as an example for alternative forms of political debates on the Internet and their potential for the formation of feminist counter-publics. However, #aufschrei was denounced on masculinist and antifeminist sites, thereby demonstrating the limits, problems, and risks of these new forums of communication. The empirically grounded analysis shows that antisexist and feminist positions remain contested in the process of public debate and cultural understanding, so that Internet publics are ambivalent as regards their potential to foster social change." Safe Spaces, Self-Care and Empowerment - Netzfeminismus im Sicherheitsdispositiv
Titelübersetzung:Safe spaces, self-care and empowerment - web feminism and the dispositif of security
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "During the last decades, security has turned into a contested and ambiguous leitmotif of western societies in the 21st century. Feminist net activist’s debates have also concentrated on security discourses, albeit with a somewhat different focal point: Feminist blogs as well as feminist conferences often focused on the creation of so called safe(r) spaces. Parallel, empowerment and self-care are discussed as important strategies to brace oneself for online abuse and harassment. The author analyzes if and how far these debates predominantly argue within the logic of the dispositifs of security, gouvernmentality and dynamics of precarization. What would it mean for feminist movements if current feminist debates largely reproduced mechanisms of governing and lost sight of 'the art of not being governed like that' (Foucault 1992)." Nerd-Pride, Privilegien und Post-Privacy: eine intersektional-hegemonietheoretische Betrachtung der Netzbewegung
Titelübersetzung:Nerd-pride, privilege, and post-privacy: analyzing Germany's Internet movement from the perspective of intersectionality and hegemony
Autor/in:
Ganz, Kathrin
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The 'Netzbewegung' (Internet Movement) is one of civil society's major voices in German debates about the internet and the social impact of digitalization. Drawing on concepts of hegemony and intersectionality, this paper analyzes the movement's political discourse. Contentions about the nerd stereotype, privileges, and the discussion of post-privacy show how social positions and inequality are inscribed into the movement's structures of subjectivization and demands. This contentious mode of self-reflexivity implies the influence of feminist and intersectional politics on cultural spaces of the net." (author's abstract)
