Die Bedeutung des Geschlechts im evangelischen Pfarramt
Titelübersetzung:Gender in the protestant ministry

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In most protestant churches in Germany, clergywomen gained equal rights in the 1970s. The access admission of women to the ministry is a result and expression of an ongoing lasting change in the relation to the place of the sexes and the social construction of gender in the Protestant church. The article explores how clergy women adopted the formerly exclusive male ministry for themselves. It analyses how the office of clergywomen was discussed in German protestant churches by theologians, church leaders and the clergy women themselves. It demonstrates that, in the process of integration of women in the protestant ministry, traditional constructions of gender were picked up, adopted, and refined." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Women in Jewish reform liturgy: the Israeli case
Autor/in:
Marx, Dalia
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Gender related issues have been discussed in liberal Judaism in North America since the 1970s, and are probably the most heated topics in contemporary Jewish liturgy and worship. This article discusses the unique challenges of gender language in Israeli Reform liturgy over the last two decades. The article addresses: inclusive language when referring to the congregation; adding representative female characters; reclaiming and adapting old rituals; creating new rituals; and gender-balanced metaphors for God. Arguably the greatest challenge is addressing the pronounced gender specification of the Hebrew language. The article delineates the parameters of gender language in Israeli liturgy, where the vernacular is also the Holy language and the language of the prayer." (author's abstract)
Zwischen Schöpfung und Erlösung: drei christlichtheologische Variationen über Geschlecht
Titelübersetzung:Between creation and salvation: three Christian-theological variations on sexuality
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Based on three exemplarily selected models of theological anthropology, the article investigates the normative production of sex/gender in Christian traditions. The approaches of Pope Benedict XVI., feminist theologian Catharina Halkes, and Church Father Gregory of Nyssa are analyzed in how they conceptualize human sexuality in its quality and stability, particularly with regard to the different aspects of 'salvific history' ('creation', 'sin', 'reconciliation', 'salvation'). Finally, the article argues for a systematic consideration of theological imaginations by gender research, in order to understand more accurately the frequently assumed connection between sex/ gender and (Christian) religion, as well as for a strategic proliferation of inner theological discourses." Titelübersetzung:Hindu traditions and women's emancipation
Autor/in:
Heller, Birgit
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In the course of the 20th century women of different religious affiliations have developed a feminist consciousness and have called into question the normative gender roles of their traditions. With the intention of discovering critical reflection approaches to traditional concepts of femininity, and the potential for women's emancipation in modern Hinduism, the status, images, roles, and self-understanding of women in two modern Hindu movements are analyzed. The dominant Brahmanical conception of femininity and the perspectives of the Indian women's movement serve an interpretative reference frame." (author's abstract)
Religion Revisited: Women's Rights and the Political
Instrumentalisation of Religion ; Tagung vom 5.–6. Juni 2009 in Berlin
Autor/in:
Birnbaum, Maria
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "How are religion and politics intertwined and
what results from this relationship? At what
point is religion a danger to equality and democracy?
These questions opened up the
“Religion Revisited” conference of the Böllfoundation
and the United Nations Research
Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) in
Berlin in June 2009. The conference focused
on identifying the voices that speak in the
name of religion, which create and guard its
borders and fundamental norms. Do women
have access to these arenas? If not, how is
change possible? Dismissing the instrument
of pure external force, the trust in solely internal
change underestimates the power of
custom and traditions. In order to qualify the
absolute character of the present, critical arguments,
new readings of texts etc. should
be made available. The need for a de-naturalization
of traditional customs was emphasized,
without, however, debasement." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: In European public debates, Islam is often described as an impediment to gender equality. By using data from surveys conducted in Germany, we analyze the role of high levels of individual religiosity in explaining Turks' and Germans' approval of gender equality and the way Turkish and German couples share household tasks. Results suggest that for both groups, individuals with strong religious commitments are less likely than secular ones to hold egalitarian gender role attitudes. At the behavioral level, this correlation between religiosity and gender egalitarianism only holds true for Turkish respondents. Furthermore, strong religious commitments contribute to generational stability in attitudinal and behavioral gender-traditionalism among Turks. However, when explaining Germans' more egalitarian gender-related attitudes and behaviors, religiosity turns out to be just one factor among others – and not a particularly important one. Further research is needed to disentangle the different cultural and religious aspects of Muslim migrants’ attitudes and behaviors.
Religious socialisation and fertility: transition to third birth in the Netherlands
Autor/in:
Berghammer, Caroline
Quelle: European Journal of Population / Revue européenne de Démographie, 25 (2009) 3, S 297-324
Inhalt: Although previous studies have demonstrated that religious people in Europe have larger families, the role played by religious socialisation in the context of contemporary fertility behaviour has not yet been analysed in detail. This contribution specifically looks at the interrelation between religious socialisation and current religiosity and their impact on the transition to the third child for Dutch women. It is based on data of the first wave of the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (2002–2004) and uses event history analysis. The transitions to first, second and third birth are modelled jointly with a control for unobserved heterogeneity. The findings provide evidence for an impact of women’s current church attendance as well as religious socialisation measured by their fathers’ religious affiliation, when they were teenagers. A religious family background remains influential even when a woman has stopped attending church. The effects of religious indicators strengthen over cohorts. Moreover, the combined religious make-up of the respondent’s parents also significantly determines the progression to the third child.

Inhalt: European societies have experienced a decrease in the social importance of religious issues. Values and attitudes towards gender roles have also changed in the last decades. In European countries, people have become more egalitarian with respect to the position of women in society. The author tries to identify the relationship between secularization and changes in gender values. As a result of secularization, the individual value system has become fragmented and religious values have lost their coordinating role. The investigation employs cross-national and longitudinal analysis of European Values Survey data (1990, 1999), most of the European countries being included in the study. The results indicate the decreasing impact of traditional religious belief on values related to gender roles during the 1990s in Europe and a common pattern of relationships between gender values and religiosity in most European societies.
Titelübersetzung:Feminisms in the postcolonial republic: debates on the law banning the veil in France
Autor/in:
Bauhardt, Christine
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The French debate on the law banning the Muslim veil in public space shows that, feminist activists refer to the principles of republican universalism despite their controversial political attitudes. Republician laicism offers the challenge of being understood as a really neutral space, where religions can express themselves as voices of civil society, and where nonetheless the right to not be religious is also recognized." Integration im Spannungsfeld kultureller Differenzen: Islam und Geschlecht in der Marktgemeinde Telfs in Tirol
Titelübersetzung:Integration between the poles of cultural difference: Islam and Gender in the Tyrolian municipality of Telfs
Autor/in:
Hollomey, Christina
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The aim of this paper is to show an example of a local integration project in the Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. How does a multicultural discourse contribute to the exclusion of women in the process of negotiating integration? Local municipalities, in trying to find new ways of ´living together liaise with migrant associations in order to get into contact with the local immigrant population. However, both actors often employ an essentialistview of culture that tends to naturalizehegemonic constructions of identity and finally leads to the reproduction of asymmetric structures of participation. Thus, integration projects may fail to address basic structural inequalities between social majorities and minorities. The focus of this paper is on women engaged in two Turkish Islamic associations in the Austrian Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. Discussing the example of a locally implemented integration project, it analyses how a multicultural discourse can serve to legitimate asymmetric participation structures within associations, as well as to reproduce them in the cooperation between migrant organizations and local municipalities.'
