Inhalt: "The restructuring of the public rector in the OECD countries, due to the introduction of New Public Management tools, has also reached the universities and academic site. These processes have far-reaching consequences for the Organisation of the university, and yet it is unclear how and to what extent the organisational changes affect the gender arrangements an which the universities were founded in the past. By looking closer at the university reforms in Austria and Germany, the article examines standards of academic excellence, academic ways of life and career systems. Focusing an disciplinary contexts and new job profiles, the article shows how gender arrangements could be changed, restructured or newly formed within the current change processes." The effect of priming gender roles on women's implicit gender beliefs and career aspirations
Autor/in:
Rudman, Laurie A.; Phelan, Julie E.
Quelle: Social psychology, Vol. 41 (2010) No. 3, S. 192-202
Inhalt: "The authors investigated the effect of priming gender roles on women's implicit gender stereotypes, implicit leadership self-concept, and interest in masculine and feminine careers. Women primed with traditional gender roles (e.g., a male surgeon and a female nurse) showed increased automatic gender stereotypes relative to controls; this effect mediated their reduced interest in masculine occupations. By contrast, exposure to nontraditional roles (e.g., a female surgeon and a male nurse) decreased women's leadership self-concept and lowered their interest in masculine occupations, suggesting that female vanguards (i.e., successful women in male-dominated careers) can provoke upward comparison threat, rather than inspire self-empowerment. Thus, priming either traditional or nontraditional gender roles can threaten progress toward gender equality, albeit through different mechanisms (stereotypes or self-concept, respectively)." Soziale Homogentiät und kulturelle Hegemonie : Ausschließung und Organisation aus Bourdieuscher Perspektive
Titelübersetzung:Social homogeneity and cultural hegemony : exclusion and organization from a Bourdieusian perspective
Autor/in:
Hofbauer, Johanna
Quelle: Feministische Studien : Zeitschrift für interdisziplinäre Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung, Jg. 28 (2010) Nr. 1, S. 25-39
Inhalt: "Scholars in the fields of Feminist studies and diversity research have argued that social homogeneity of top management (majority of upper class white men), is an important cause for, not only a consequence of, social exclusion in modern organization. The article takes up on the argument of social homogeneity accounting for cultural hegemony in institutions, with an attempt to Show the use of Pierre Bourdieu's approaches to social inequality and symbolic domination. Bourdieu has only recently been 'discovered' by organization studies, explaining for the range of open theoretical questions as well as the lack of comprehensive empirical research. This said, the article still attempts to demonstrate how Bourdieusian concepts such as social distinction, organization field, capital, habitus and symbolic violence already now add to our understanding of exclusion in modern organization." Work-life-balance : Individualisierungsprozesse und Reproduktion von Geschlechterdifferenzen
Titelübersetzung:Work-life-balance : individualization and reproduction of gender inequalities
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Despite the heavily debated individualization of social structures, gender inequalities are steadily reproduced. Up to now, applied researches show the period of starting a family as a particularly critical moment in the reproduction and persistence of social structures. It is considered as revealing of the ambivalent relationship between tradition binding structures and processes of modernization regarding genders. Yet it remains often unclear how such reproductions take place. This research examines how five (married) couples organize their everyday life and why certain social structures cannot be transferred into individual patterns of action. These individual processes are analyzed on the basis of the work-life-balance concept and the theory of individualization (by Beck 1986). Through an 'apparent' individualization, social and political issues are forced on to the private sphere. Even if equal opportunities are generally assumed and considered as an accepted norm in Switzerland, it shows that individualization is greatly 'gendered'. The modernized respectively traditional civic models turn out to be the (seemingly) most pragmatic ones regarding the division between paid employment and family and domestic work. Thus, the male is still assumed to be the bread-earner. Genuineindividualized solutions are still in spare number. The apparent variety of options and space of action may therefore be considered as a remote ideal for most people." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Based on insights from more than 30 years of women and gender research, the authors first delineate structural aspects of horizontal and vertical gender-based division of labor in the sciences and, furthermore, examine the various risks for women according to academic disciplines. Based on two examples: the distribution of research funding and the recently introduced bachelor and master programs, they discuss to what extent the current reforms in Europe, among other things triggered by the Bologna Process, might entail a shifting of gender boundaries and gendered work risks in the sciences. Since it is not clear what kind of logic will dominate the field of science in the future, either the self-created traditional competition of reputation or the logic of markets as evoked in the ongoing discourse on 'marketisation', the authors plead for a more accurate historical contextualization of the debate about current changes in research and higher education." Transparency in Academic Recruitment : A Problematic Tool for Gender Equality?
Autor/in:
van den Brink, Marieke; Benschop, Yvonne; Jansen, Willy
Quelle: Organization Studies, 31 (2010) 11, S 1459–1483
Inhalt: Gender research has made a call for more transparency and accountability in academic recruitment and selection in order to overcome the inequality practices that have led to an underrepresentation of women among full professors. This paper provides insight into the multiple ways in which the notions of transparency and accountability are put into practice in academic recruitment and selection, and how this has enhanced – or hindered – gender equality. The methods employed consist of a qualitative content analysis of seven recruit-ment and selection protocols, interviews with 64 committee members, and an analysis of 971 appointment reports of full professors in the Netherlands. Our analysis contributes to the study of organizations in three respects. First, it shows that recruitment and selection processes are characterized by bounded transparency and limited accountability at best. Second, it explains that the protocols that should ensure transparency and accountability remain paper tigresses, because of the micropolitics and gender practices that are part and parcel of recruitment and selection. Third, it contributes to gender equality theory in organization theory by showing how a myriad of gender practices simultaneously increases and counteracts gender equality measures in academia.
