Inhalt: "The following article makes a contribution to the study of opportunities and difficulties of female East German political mandate holders, and justifies the use of an analytical biography approach. The article is empirically based on the results of my dissertation project East German women in politics. A qualitative analysis. In this present paper I discuss the reasons why exactly the biography-analytical approach is suitable to explore topics of the intertwining of 'outer' life course and 'inner' sedimentation of biographical experiences. The key results of my study are outlined. It is shown that especially the rapid political and socio-cultural change within the former GDR in 1989/1990 offered unique participation opportunities for politically ambitious East German women to pursue a career as parliamentarians after a radically new political scene had been set up. The article also focuses on the paradoxes that the contemporary female mandate holders tend to be confronted with; these paradoxes are exacerbated by the ascribed genderized roles of female politicians. On the empirical base of my (finished) research project, this paper attempts to generate analytical categories and to discuss with their help the work and life situation of women socialized in East Germany within political arenas. The analysis will be pursued in a biography-theoretical perspective, and some ofthe particular features of the field of research of East German women in politics will be formulated." Qualitative comparative analysis as a method for innovation research: analysing legal innovations in OECD countries
Titelübersetzung:Qualitative Comparative Analysis als Methode für die Innovationsforschung: eine Analyse rechtlicher Neuerungen in OECD-Staaten
Autor/in:
Laux, Thomas
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 40 (2015) 3, S 79-108
Inhalt: "The article presents Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) as a method for innovation research. Based on set-theory, a key feature of QCA is the possibility to examine the necessary and the sufficient conditions for the institutionalisation of innovations. QCA aims to identify equifinal explanations for a social phenomenon, which consist of a combination of several conditions. This approach distinguishes QCA from qualitative and quantitative methods. Furthermore, QCA combines a comparative and a case-oriented approach, which is especially interesting for the analysis of innovations as context-sensitive and contingent phenomena. QCA as a research approach and method is outlined briefly, with special regard to the tasks of innovation research. Its application is presented in a study of the conditions for equal pay regulations in OECD countries. The analysis shows that the relevant actors for the institutionalisation of equal pay regulations are either women's movements or unions but that neither are solely sufficient for this legal innovation. Instead QCA also captures the context conditions for their impact on the enactment of equal pay regulations." (author's abstract)
The issue of fuzzy concepts in test construction and possible remedies
Autor/in:
Ziegler, Matthias; Kemper, Christoph J.; Lenzner, Timo
Quelle: European Journal of Psychological Assessment, 31 (2015) 1, S 1-4
Inhalt: Many test constructions show a lack of awareness concerning the comprehensibility of items, specifically in personality tests. However, this lack of awareness can have implications for psychometric quality. Frequently, it is simply assumed that respondents’ understanding of a test item matches the meaning implied by the test developer. It is, however, rarely ever tested whether all respondents of the targeted population actually understand the test items correctly and in a similar way. As pointed out in the last editorial (Ziegler, 2014), item content should be precisely tuned to the needs of every potential respondent in a population targeted by a newly developed test. More specifically, person variables such as age, gender, and education (Rammstedt & Kemper, 2011) have to be taken into account when constructing test items in order to assure that each potential respondent fully understands the meaning and may respond accordingly. If these person variables are neglected in the process of test construction, the psychometric quality of a test may be substantially affected by fuzzy concepts. The goal of this editorial is to raise awareness for the detrimental effects fuzzy concepts can have in test development and possible remedies. (author's abstract)

Autor/in:
Reinisch, Dieter
"We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are": questioning the "outsider" in Polish migration research

Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 16 (2015) 2, 17 S
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: This article offers a reflexive account of conducting research on Polish migration to Scotland from the perspective of the "outsider". The contribution argues for a revision to the insider/outsider dichotomy viewing it as inadequately nuanced in relation to the multiple intersectionalities performed through the research encounter. It is based on data collected from biographical-narrative interviews with Polish young people living in Edinburgh, Scotland. The article explores the interview encounter between an English researcher and Polish young people about the experience of EU mobility and argues that as migration narratives unfold the distinctions between the "researcher" and the "researched" blur. In particular, I focus on the intersections of gender, class and nationality to show how different positionalities are negotiated and confronted through reflexivity. The interview is a creative process involving co-construction of narratives through dialogue, embodied performances and non-cognitive associations that draw out the multiple intersectionalities of both parties. Through this process the binary of insider/outsider is called into question and this article examines the usefulness of this dichotomy as a framework for understanding the research relationship.(author's abstract)
"Inside" and "outside" of what or where? Researching migration through multi-positionalities
Titelübersetzung:Inside oder outside von was? Erforschung von Migration aus multiplen Positionalitäten

Ryan, Louise
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 16 (2015) 2, 17 S
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: Drawing upon my long experience of qualitative migration research, this article uses the concept of "multiple positionalities", to challenge the fixity of positionality underpinning constructions of "insiders" versus "outsiders" in the research process. While "insider" status is usually associated with shared ethnicity/ nationality, migration studies have been urged to go beyond the ethnic lens (Amelina & Faist, 2012; Glick Schiller & Çaglar, 2009). I argue that migrants cannot be neatly contained within fixed "insider" ethnic categories; instead it is more illuminating to consider how identities are re-constructed through migration. In this contribution I use moments from a range of research studies with migrant women in London. In comparing and contrasting my encounters with these migrants, who come from Ireland and Poland, I critically reflect upon how empathy and rapport were negotiated through dynamic rhythms of positionalities-gender, age, professional and parental status and migratory experience, as well as nationality. In so doing, I consider the challenges but also the opportunities of researching within as well as across migrant populations and how this may inform an attempt to go beyond the ethnic lens. Intergenerational transmissions in transnational families and national affiliations

Inhalt: "This article explains and illustrates the method of family histories, reconstructed from crossed biographical interviews of different members of the same family. This methodology allows for the collection of fine and precious data in order to try to understand the complexity of the dynamics of intergenerational transmissions and the construction of national affiliations of immigrants' descendants. It shows how continuously shifting family relationships underlie creativity in parenting strategies. In addition, this approach can circumvent some specific barriers to the study of immigrant families, who often speak uneasily with researchers. This methodology helps us to avoid reification of static identities." (author's abstract)
Intergenerational transmission of trajectories of suffering in precarious environments: researching the younger generations' strategies of reinterpretation
Autor/in:
Chaieb, Sarra; Schwarz, Christoph H.
Quelle: Zeitschrift für Qualitative Forschung, 15 (2014) 1-2, S 57-77
Inhalt: "This article discusses some pivotal questions regarding processes of the intergenerational transmission of trajectories of suffering in precarious places: to what extent can such processes provide resources that foster agency, and to what extent do they rather constitute barriers to living one's own life? How much do intergenerational relations allow for certain reinterpretations while discouraging or inhibiting others? Which reinterpretations of the older generations' experiences appear legitimate in certain contexts, and which are rebuked by one's social environment? In order to pursue these questions we present analyses of two very different cases that are based on two forms of data material - the life story of Emma, a woman in her 50s, and ethno-analytic group interviews with adolescents aged 14 to 20. Both cases are embedded in very different regional and political contexts: the former, in the French system of fostering institutions, and the latter a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank. Both constitute, however, cases of intergenerational transmission of trajectories of suffering. One objective of this article is to illustrate how the contrasting of such cases across different kinds of data and contexts can be heuristically useful for methodologically gauging the spectrum of the ubiquitous and sometimes paradoxical phenomena of intergenerational transmission, in order to further develop its conceptualization." The effectiveness of the item count technique in eliciting valid answers to sensitive questions: an evaluation in the context of self-reported delinquency

Inhalt: "Surveys often contain sensitive questions, that is, questions about private, illegal, or socially undesirable behavior. When asked directly in standard survey modes, respondents tend to underreport these behaviors, yielding biased results. One method that promises more valid estimates than direct questioning (DQ) is the item count technique (ICT). In this paper, methodological benefits and disadvantages of the ICT, as compared to DQ, are empirically evaluated with regard to questions on self-reported delinquency. We present findings from a face-to-face survey of 552 respondents who had been convicted under criminal law prior to the survey. The results show that, first, subjective measures of survey quality such as trust in anonymity or willingness to respond are not affected positively by the ICT with the exception that interviewers feel less uncomfortable asking sensitive questions in ICT mode than in DQ mode. Second, all prevalence estimates of self-reported delinquent behaviors are significantly higher in ICT than in DQ mode. Third, a regression model on determinants of response behavior indicates that the effect of the ICT on response validity varies by gender. All in all, our results are in favor of the ICT. This technique is a promising alternative to other special questioning techniques such as the much more complicated randomized response technique (RRT)." (author's abstract)
Age and sex effects in anchoring vignette studies: methodological and empirical contributions
Autor/in:
Grol-Prokopczyk, Hanna
Quelle: Survey Research Methods, 8 (2014) 1, S 1-17
Inhalt: "Anchoring vignettes are an increasingly popular tool for identifying and correcting for group differences in use of subjective ordered response categories. However, existing techniques to maximize response consistency (use of the same standards for self-ratings as for vignette-ratings), which center on matching vignette characters' demographic characteristics to respondents' own characteristics, appear at times to be ineffective or to pose interpretive difficulties. Specifically, respondents often appear to neglect instructions to treat vignette characters as age peers. Furthermore, when vignette characters' sex is matched to respondents' sex, interpretation of sex differences in rating style is rendered problematic. This study applies two experimental manipulations to a national American sample (n=1,765) to clarify best practices for enhancing response consistency. First, an analysis of two methods of highlighting vignette characters' age suggests that both yield better response consistency than previous, less prominent means. Second, a comparison of ratings of same- and opposite-sex vignette characters suggests that, with avoidable exceptions, the sex of the respondent rather than of the vignette character drives observed sex differences in rating style. Implications for interpretation and design of anchoring vignette studies are discussed. Findings also show significant sex, educational, and racial/ethnic differences in styles of rating health, and racial/ethnic differences in styles of rating political efficacy. These findings underscore the incomparability of unadjusted subjective self-ratings across demographic groups." (publisher's description)
