Whitely, William; Dougherty, Thomas W.; Dreher, George F.
Quelle: Journal of occupational behaviour, Vol. 13 (1992) No. 2, S. 141-154
(IAB)
Inhalt: "This study exeamines several different kinds of correlates of career-oriented mentoring experiences among early career managers and professionals. Survey data were collected from 416 respondents employed in a wide variety of jobs, organizations, and industries. The respondents averaged 30 years of age, and 28 per cent were women. Results indicated that younger, more work-inolved respondents from higher socioeconomic origins received more career-oriented mentoring. In addition, managers received more mentoring than professionals, as did those who were higher in the organization hierarchy. While gender of the protege was unrelated to the amount of career mentoring received, reasons are offered for this result. Various boundary conditions likely to affect mentoring processes are discussed and several directions are recommended for future research on mentoring." (author's abstract)

Work-family conflict : a comparison of dual-career and traditional-career men
Autor/in:
Higgins, Christopher A.; Duxbury, Linda E.
Quelle: Journal of occupational behaviour, Vol. 13 (1992) No. 4, S. 389-411
(IAB)
Inhalt: "This research examines differences in the antecedents and consequences of work-family conflict - a form of interrole conflict that occurs when the demands of work and family are mutually incompatible in some respect - for two groups of career-oriented men: those with a homemaker wife (called traditional-career men) and those with a spouse in a career-oriented job (labelled dual-career men). Using a model built on the work of Kopelman, Greenhaus and Connolly (1983), the responses from 136 dual-career man and 137 traditional-career men were compared. The primary conclusion of this reserach is that maternal career employment has a significant effect on the antecedents of work-familiy conflict. Dual-career man appear to experience a significant negative spillover from their work domain. We suggest that this spillover is due to a lack of structural flexibility in the workplace, outdated organizational policies that operate on the 'myth of separate worlds' and a lack of social support for the male dual-career role which contradicts societal norms."
Titelübersetzung:Career opportunities and compatibility between family and occupation in the USA : an empirical study on women in university administration in Maryland
Autor/in:
Kriszio, Marianne
Career plans and expectations of young women and men : the earnings gap and labor force participation
Titelübersetzung:Karrierepläne und Erwartungen von jungen Frauen und Männern - Der Einkommensunterschied und die Erwerbsbeteiligung
Autor/in:
Blau, Francine D.; Ferber, Marianne A.
Quelle: Journal of human resources, Vol. 26 (1991) No. 4, S. 581-607
(IAB)
Inhalt: "Using detailed information on the career plans and earnings expectations of college business school seniors, we test the hypothesis that women who plan to work intermittently choose jobs with lower rewards to work experience in return for lower penalties for labor force interruptions. We find that while men and women expect similar starting salaries, women anticipate considerably lower earnings in subsequent years, even under the assumption of continuous employment after leaving school. While it is also true that women in the sample plan to work fewer years than men, these differences do not explain the observed gender differences in expected earnings profiles. We also find no evidence that gender differences in expected earnings have any effect on the number of years these women plan to be in the labor market." (author's abstract)

Soziale Bewegungen, Gegenbewegungen und Staat: der Abtreibungskonflikt in den USA, Frankreich und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland
Titelübersetzung:Social movements, countermovements and the state: the abortion conflict in the USA, France and the Federal Republic of Germany
Autor/in:
Rucht, Dieter
Quelle: Forschungsjournal Neue Soziale Bewegungen, 4 (1991) 2, S 31-42

Inhalt: "The sociology of science has clearly established the presence of sex differences in scientific productivity and position. This article examines the processes leading to the lower productivity of female scientists at the completion of their doctoral training. Collaboration with the mentor is found to be the most important factor affecting productivity. For females, opportunities for collaboration are significantly decreased by having young children. As a consequence, the presence of young children has an adverse, indirect effect on the productivity of female scientists during graduate study. This effect does not exist for males. In addition to differences in the process of collaboration, many small differences that disadvantage women and advantage men are found in the levels of resources affecting productivity and in the mechanisms by which resources are translated into productivity. The concentration of small disadvantages provides a further explanation of sex differences in productivity at the start of the career. Since early advantages and disadvantages have been found to accumulate, this article provides an essential first step in understanding sex differences in scientific productivity and position that emerge during the career." Are women and blacks closing the gap? : salary discrimination in American science during the 1970s and 1980s
Autor/in:
Haberfeld, Yitchak; Shenhav, Yehouda
Quelle: Industrial and labor relations review, Vol. 44 (1990) No. 1, S. 68-82
Inhalt: "The authors use two longitudinal surveys of American scientists conducted by the
Census Bureau, one for the years 1972-76 and one for the years 1982-86, to estimate
salary discrimination against black scientists and female scientists. In counterpoint
to the results of some other studies, which have suggested that race- and gender-based
salary discrimination has been either declining or stable in many occupations, this
analysis provides evidence that salary discrimination against black scientists and
female scientists worsened between the 1970s and the 1980s. Female scientists earned
about 12% less than similarly qualified male scientists in 1972, but 14% less in 1982;
and black scientists earned about the same amount as white scientists in 1972, but
6% less in 1982." (author's abstract)|
