Inhalt: "Persisting differences between women's and men's experiences in science make this question as relevant today as it ever was. This book sets out to answer this question, and to propose solutions for the future. Based on extensive research, it emphasizes that science is an intensely social activity. Despite the scientific ethos of universalism and inclusion, scientists and their insitutions are not immune to the prejudices of society as a whole. By presenting women's experiences at all key career stages - from childhood to retirement - the authors reveal the hidden barriers, subtle exclusions and unwritten rules of the scientific workplace, and the effects, both professional and personal, that these have on the female scientist. Based on hundreds of interviews and supported by quantitative analysis, contains vivid personal accounts of sacrifices made and adaptive strategies developed, explains how career success and research discoveries depend on `social capital' the relationships and networks that scientists rely on for access to new ideas and professional support." Inhalt: "Women and Scientific Employment combines rich empirical data and theoretical discussion on the 'problem' of women's representation in scientific education and employment. Making a plea forthe different scientific disciplines to be examined separately, it contributes to public policy debates on the sciences and to sociological knowledge on women's professional employment. A major conclusion is that a science can contain either a few or many women but they are equally likely to be concentrated in low level positions. There is little evidence from Britain, USA or France - the three countries focused on - that high levels of 'getting in' (quantitative feminization) lead to correspondingly high levels of 'getting on' (vertical feminization). Clear general implications for research, policy and data-gathering on women's employment follow from this conclusion: there needs to be a renewed emphasis on the examination of vertical segregation within particular occupations. Encouraging women to enter the sciences has only a weak connection with their retention and advancement." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: A study investigated the experiences of a purposive sample of 12 women who have taken technological career paths and who have excelled in their respective fields. The study began with one question: "What internal and/or external factors influenced, supported, and/or encouraged these women to become competent at a very high level in nontraditional, technologically related professions?" By "nontraditional," the researcher meant these fields that are nontraditional for women: mathematics, science, and technology (MST). The study used a qualitative design that included in-depth interviews, observations, and document analyses. The study's conclusions reinforced prior research that indicated that role models, scaffolding, and collaborative or reality-based assignments facilitate girls' interest in MST. New findings revealed that fathers, male peers, and male siblings played a strong part in motivating the participants to engage in tinkering activities and provided scaffolding. Other findings indicated that girls need to be encouraged to ask questions and to take risks, even if they are only moderate ones, if they are to enter MST fields. From the data, it appeared the infusion of play activities in MST environments also needs to be encouraged. (Contains 81 references.)

Inhalt: "This research examines the effects of gender and a number of family experiences on young people's chances of going into postsecondary science training and science occupations in the years immediately following high school. Data came from the nationally representative, longitudinal High School and Beyond survey. Results show that gender plays a significant role in choices involving early science training and occupations-especially training. Amongst young men and women with comparable resources and qualifications, young women are less likely to make the science choice. The family experiences and expectations examined here are not a major factor in understanding gender differences in access to science training and occupations. Although much of the literature describes the domains of science and of family as being at odds, results from this research suggest that family experiences play a rather minimal role in predicting who will enter science training or occupations in the early post-high school years. When family variables do have an effect, they are not always negative and the nature of the effect varies by the time in the life cycle that the family variable is measured, by type of family experience (orientation vs. procreation), by outcome (science major vs. science occupation), and by gender." (ICA)

Inhalt: "Researchers in the area of women in science are trying to understand how the participation of women in science can be increased and also what prevents women from developing scientific careers. Past influential work supports the importance of taking the perspective of women's education and career paths as a whole, emphasizing the importance of structural and social factors in career progress. This paper reports some outcomes from an interview study with women PhD physicists working in a variety of science-related careers. Our aim is to explore and document the career experience of women scientists and to identify barriers and constraints to women's participation in science careers and to investigate ways in which educational experiences contribute to career progress."
