Each year the University of Freiburg awards the Bertha Ottenstein Prize to students or staff who have excelled through special initiatives or projects relating to gender equality and/or gender studies. The prize fund of €5,000 is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements in the following areas:

• Academic achievements in women’s and gender studies
• Classes or training events focusing on gender equality
• Initiatives for organised networking in relation to gender issues
• Outstanding commitment in the implementation of the gender equality plan
• Recruitment and staff development measures to counter the under-representation of women
• Establishment of innovative measures to make it easier to balance family and studies/employment at the university
