Inhalt: Sexual harassment represents aggressive behavior that is often enacted instrumentally, in response to a threatened sense of masculinity and male identity. To date, however, theoretical attention to the social cognitive processes that regulate workplace harassment is scant. This article presents the development and preliminary validation of the Moral Disengagement in Sexual Harassment Scale (MDiSH); a self-report measure of moral disengagement in the context of hostile work environment harassment. Three studies (total n = 797) document the excellent psychometric properties of this new scale. Male U.K. university students (Study 1: n = 322) and U.S. working males (Studies 2 and 3: n = 475) completed the MDiSH and an array of measures for construct validation. The MDiSH exhibited positive correlations with sexual harassment myth acceptance, male gender identification, and hostile sexism. In Study 3, participants were exposed to a fictitious case of hostile work environment harassment. The MDiSH attenuated moral judgment, negative emotions (guilt, shame, and anger), sympathy, and endorsement of prosocial behavioral intentions (support for restitution) associated with the harassment case. Conversely, the MDiSH increased positive affect (happiness) about the harassment and attribution of blame to the female complainant. Implications for practice and future research avenues are discussed.

International variation in ageing and economic dependency: a cohort perspective

Inhalt: "Within this analysis of demographic and economic dependency ratios for 45 countries around the world, we reiterate the importance of age- and gender-specific employment levels as well as their determinants when discussing the economic challenges associated with population ageing. Building upon existing research on economic dependency, we portray and discuss cohort variation in employment and its possible effect on the challenges of population ageing, focusing on the implications of high youth unemployment, the role of changes in female employment and the evolution of retirement patterns across cohorts. The insights from our analysis reaffirm findings elsewhere that younger populations may not be as well off in the light of demographic change as an analysis of their demographic structure alone would suggest and stress the importance of considering the cohort dimension of employment in this discussion." Queering intersectionality: encountering the transnational

Shephard, Nicole
Quelle: GENDER - Zeitschrift für Geschlecht, Kultur und Gesellschaft, 8 (2016) 2, S 31-45
Details
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article is a conceptual exploration of the queering potential that emerges from a productive dialogue between the literatures on intersectionality in gender theory, on the notion of queering in queer theory, and on transnationalism in migration studies. It argues that the queering of intersectionality provides ways of thinking beyond the normativities residing in both intersectional and transnational research agendas. Queering thus not only engages intersectional theory and its subject matter, but equally its status as a research paradigm that has given rise to its own normative modes of knowledge production. Taking its cue from a range of related critical interventions, this article proposes that, read through one another as a queer intersectional lens, they have the potential to mitigate against heteronormative assumptions underlying transnational research as well as the tethering of intersectionality to particularly marked bodies." "Making Art, Making Media, Making Change!?"

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "How can social and cultural regimes that structure society be addressed when working with young people? How can power structures and hegemonic constructions be called into question? The scientific communication project presented in this article addresses these questions. In collaboration with young people, the project opens up possible interventions in hegemonic interpretations through young people's active cultural productions. The theoretical outline is shaped by queer theories - in particular the queering perspective - linked to approaches in critical art and cultural education. Based on visual material developed within the research project (image cards that question heteronormativity and gender binary) we discuss a way to critically reflect dominant regimes of the gaze and hegemonic images. We suggest that queering can open a space of agency for young people in which societal and social norms can be deconstructed and new meanings developed and envisioned." (author's abstract)

Migrant Adolescent Girls in Urban Slums India:
Aspirations, Opportunities and Challenges

Agarwal, Siddharth; Jones, Eleri; Verma, Shabnam

Details
Inhalt: Migrant adolescent girls in India’s fast-growing urban-slum population face multiple intersecting vulnerabilities,
including gender, poverty and migrant-status.
The study aims to understand the opportunities and challenges for migrant adolescent girls in low-income urban
slum settings.
Qualitative data were collected through interviews with girls aged 12-19 who migrated during the past two years
and non-migrant adolescent girls for comparison to explore their experiences in fast-growing Indore. A groupinterview with slum women’s group members discussedways to address challenges.
Push/pull factors linked with different employment/educational opportunities between rural and urban areas
motivated families of unmarried girls to migrate. Recently married girls joined city-based families or accompanied
husbands who were labor migrants. Neither married nor unmarried girls played decision-making roles in
migration.
Married migrant adolescent girls faced challenges in accessing education, employment, social opportunities and
services owing to restrictions on freedom of movement, weak social networks, and little awareness of
opportunities and services. Childbearing migrant girls faced particular risks. Contact with their natal families being
limited, the quality of relationship with husbands and marital families was crucial for married girls’well-being.
Unmarried girls attending schools were positive about the migration experience, perceiving the city to offer
greater educational opportunities. Through school, they accessed opportunities for new relationships and social
activities. Not all unmarried adolescent-girls wereable to access opportunities owing to family restrictions and
economic circumstances. These girls’ worlds remained small despite moving to a large city.
Where girls’ economic and/or family and social circumstances allowed, migration entailed a positive change that
enhanced their opportunities. Specific challenges of this population segment need focus in policies and programs,
prioritizing three particularly vulnerable groups: girls who are neither in education nor employment, pregnant
girls or new mothers, and those with difficult relationships in marital homes. Proactive outreach to raise awareness about opportunities and services and fostering social networks through front-line workers and slum women’s groups are recommended.

Liebe zum Schicksal? Symbolische Gewalt im Übergang von der Paarbeziehung zur Elternschaft
Titelübersetzung:Tryst with destiny? Symbolic violence in the transition to parenthood Gender inequality as a crucial part of the social order is inevitably effective when couples start a family

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This is because the partners have to dissolve the contradiction between family life and economic constraints in their everyday practices. Love has a key role to play as a driving force in this dilemma, not only as love between men and women, but also as amor fati. Bourdieu calls this the embodied penchant to realize a certain identity, which is also a gendered identity. Embodying an identity means incorporating a social order, i.e. a gender order, which is, concurrently, an act of symbolic violence. In this article I argue that parents, by holding up the ideal of equal opportunities in their relationship after their first child is born, cannot refrain from negating this structural power and, at the same time, making it more effective. Since the organization of work and work organizations as such reproduce gendered dichotomies, and since these dichotomies are still structurally powerful in identity work, this leads to a 'tryst with (a gendered) destiny' rather than to more equality in couples."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In debates on early childhood education gender is often thematized as the differences between boys and girls. A perspective on gender differences can, for example, be found in empirical studies and elementary school curricula. Supposed differences thus build the foundation for the normative settings on how to discuss gender, without questioning the underlying presumptions. The relevance the actors in child day care facilities themselves attach to gender has so far hardly been investigated. This article presents a reconstructive study on doing gender in a child day care facility in which professionals, children and parents were surveyed by means of ethnographic participant observation. Based on empirical results on gender constructions of children and professionals who supposedly act in a gender-neutral manner, the gaps in early educational debates are discussed." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In addition to providing information, picture books have a great influence on language learning and the development of cognitive skills. They thus make an important contribution to children's culturalization process, and as a conduit of social discourses they transport ideas of gender and men's and women's (a)typical behaviour. Using data from 6,117 characters in 133 picture books which are currently being read in child day care facilities, the article examines the following questions: What is the binary gender distribution in picture books? Are gender stereotypes reproduced or are they softened? Do picture books add to the heteronormative dualism of men and women?" (author's abstract)
