(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: Based on conceptual considerations, this article deals with the prevalence and patterns of domestic violence and abuse against older women. Results of a representative survey from 2010 will be reported, where a total number of 2,880 home-dwelling older women (60+) from five European countries were interviewed about their perception and experiences of violence and abuse within the past 12 months. 3 out of 10 of the older women (30.1 percent) were affected by incidents of domestic violence and abuse, differing in form and extent, but also with consequences for their actions and feelings. Violence and abuse against older women has many faces and occurs in subtle forms. Because the problem is (co-) determined by individual, social and cultural (risk-) factors, -preventative measures must take into account the societal structures, in which violence and abuse are embedded, as well as the cultural practices, to which they are linked back. Inhalt: Objective: To investigate the sociodemographic profile of family caregivers of elderly at home and the level of overload resulted by care activity. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted with 29 family caregivers of elderly individuals enrolled in a Family Health Strategy. There were collected data on functional independence, demographic data and level of caregiver overload. A study approved by the Research Ethics Committee, under Opinion No. 128,580/2012. Results: It was found that 79% of the elderly had functional dependence. The profile of caregivers showed that the majority are women, married, with advanced age, level of education and low income. It was also found that the time devoted to the care is long, justifying the overload observed, mainly in caregivers of dependent elderly. Conclusion: The results point out the need for more social support and health care to family caregivers, which could contribute to reducing the overload related to caring.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Recent social gerontology and sociological research suggest that not only personal factors but also the socio-spatial context is assumed to be a factor in explaining quality of life. Together they make up the objective action context for subjective perceptions and evaluations of an individual, which are relevant for behavior. Using survey data from 2010 with 593 older women living at home (60+), the social and spatial aspects are considered as explanatory variables for the subjective quality of life. The analysis shows: subjective life quality of older women depends largely on the perception of safety, social embeddedness and their health status. While quality of life can mainly be explained by socio-spatial aspects of the community or neighborhood, feelings of insecurity depend on the size of the community, the extent of social activities (participation) and are also common among vulnerable groups of older people with low education and health." Inhalt: In the face of persistent health inequalities in later life, the objective of the study is to examine whether distinct forms of health lifestyles and individual or collective social capital predict the probability of health resilience among a cohort of men and women aged 65 and older from lower social classes. A longitudinal study design based on four waves of the German Socio-Economic Panel (2002 to 2008) was employed. The study cohort included 2,075 participants. Analyses were performed using hierarchical-linear models, cluster analyses and binary logistic regressions. The main outcome measures were health-related quality of life, based on a modified SF12, and a dichotomised measure for health resilience based on the SF12 scores. A social gradient was observed for the physical health of men and for the mental health of women, respectively, with participants from lower social classes reporting lesser scores of health-related quality of life compared to participants with higher socioeconomic status. Regarding the physical resilience of elderly men, a moderate health conscious lifestyle was the most pronounced predictor (OR=9.5, p<0.1%). Social capital did not elevate the probability of physical resilience among men. Mental resilience of women was strongly associated with a health conscious lifestyle as well as a moderate health risky lifestyle (OR=4.2, p<0.1% in each case). Quantitative aspects of social capital, like an above average number of friends and close relatives, were positively associated with mental resilience of elderly women (OR=1.9, p<0.1% and OR=1.3, p<5%, respectively). The data provides evidence that health conscious as well as moderate health risky lifestyles and quantitative aspects of individual social capital serve as protective factors for health resilience among older men and women with low socioeconomic status. The findings could be used as guidelines to promote health resilience among the elderly in lower social classes and thus to reduce health inequalities in later life.

Inhalt: "The paper examines the combination of the German Aging Survey (Deutscher Alterssurvey - DEAS) with the Sample of Active Pension Accounts (Versicherungskontenstichprobe - VSKT), as an example of how survey results may be linked together with administrative data using statistical matching. Statistical matching is a technique increasingly being applied in order to combine information from different data sources where no linkage can be made between records based on any unique identifier. This might be due to confidentiality restrictions or attempts to avoid the high attrition rates connected with informed consent requirements. The aim of this matching is to provide a combined dataset that contains more information than the data sources would on their own. In their paper, the authors detail some preparatory steps for making this match, such as the definition and adjustment of matching variables. The steps they describe may well be worth challenging on the basis of the divergent characteristics of the two sets of data. The authors also outline the procedure they used to combine the data sources, based on the Mahalanobis distance vector. Finally, the authors assess the quality of the matching by comparing the individual pension amounts that they can extract from each of the two matching sources as our external criterion."
Inhalt: Empirical evidence of the effects of age on depressive symptoms is mixed, ranging from positive to zero to negative effects, depending on the modelling of the age-depression profile. This paper uses internationally comparative data to analyse the association between age and the prevalence of symptoms of depression, controlling for well-known determinants of mental health. Based on the first wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), depressive symptoms of 28,538 persons aged 50 to 89 from eleven European countries and Israel are analysed using a negative binomial regression model. The results indicate that the number of depressive symptoms measured by EURO-D scores increase with age and are higher among women than among men. When including socio-demographic characteristics, health conditions and economic strains, the association between depressive symptoms and age vanishes for men, and even reverses for women. Thus, the association between age and mental health is mediated by the health and living conditions of older persons; age by itself has no explanatory power.
