The EU project UniSAFE has published materials and methodology descriptions of the soon-to-be-available dataset of the UniSAFE survey to support secondary use of the dataset, including the method report, codebook, and 13 language versions of the questionnaire. The UniSAFE dataset for secondary use will be available after 29 February 2024 due to embargo.

The aim of the UniSAFE survey was to deliver evidence on the prevalence of gender-based violence, including sexual harassment, in research performing organizations. The survey also enquires into contextual factors, determinants, and consequences of gender-based violence. With over 45,000 respondents, it is the largest cross-cultural survey on gender-based violence in the research sector.

The method report of the UniSAFE survey consists of methodological specifications on the development of the survey questionnaire and its measurements, including the implementation of the survey field phase. The report details the methods and quality standards GESIS, and other project partners applied during the development and testing of the questionnaire, the questionnaire translation process, and the final implementation of the survey. It also covers the data curation and weighting processes applied to the survey data.

The codebook explicates the survey dataset’s layout, all included variables, and what the codes in the dataset mean. It includes a complete list of each variable’s name and label, as well as value labels that the variable takes and how it is operationalized. Information on the operationalization covers the programming instructions, filter commands, and question text. The variables are ordered by dimension, following the order as presented in the UniSAFE questionnaire: filter questions, socio-demographics, prevalence of gender-based violence, consequences, determinants, and contextual factors.

The source questionnaire of the UniSAFE survey has been translated into 13 target languages to facilitate the roll out of the UniSAFE survey in each of the national languages in addition to English. Overall, the UniSAFE survey was rolled out in 14 languages: Dutch, Czech, Finnish, Swedish, French, German, Icelandic, English, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Serbian, Spanish, and Turkish. The language versions of the questionnaire are now published to contribute to future research on gender-based violence in higher education.
