Inhalt: "Intergenerational relationships within family and kinship have become a salient issue in scientific research. Major reasons were intense demographic changes in the 20th century, such as the increased life expectancy in combination with decreased fertility, and its implications for major institutions of the social welfare state. This has resulted in the realization of several larger studies, which may serve for the analysis of the situation of old aged people, such as the German Socio-economic Panel, the Generations and Gender Survey, the Family Survey, the German Aging Survey, the Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, and the Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics. However, an overarching theoretical and research perspective on intergenerational relationships from their creation (fertility) over parenting to the most long-lasting relationship between adults of different generations is still missing. In order to overcome this deficiency, the paper recommends for future data structures to obtain information on intergenerational relationships (1) simultaneously and complete, (2) in a lifespan perspective, (3) from a panel design, and (4) a multi-actor design. Studies should (5) account for cultural variability of intergenerational relationships and (6) for institutional settings in cross-national comparisons." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collects information on both dietary intake and health conditions from a complex sample of individuals in the US. Instrumental-variable regression can be used to model an individual's health-related attribute as a linear function of explanatory variables including the average daily intake of dietary components. This overcomes the apparent limitation of the NHANES collecting dietary intake data on only two days per sampled individual because the averages of two days per individual exhibit considerable intra-individual variability. Readily available software routines can perform survey-sensitive instrumental-variable regression with data like that collected by the NHANES, but the relevant quantitative literature is not clear about what parameters these routines are actually estimating. The authors fit the long-term (usual) serum beta-carotene level of a population of women aged 20-64 to a linear function of each woman's long-term average (usual) daily beta-carotene intake from food and other explanatory variables using survey-sensitive instrumental regression and provide two interpretations of the results." Impact of mixed survey modes on physical activity and fruit/ vegetable consumption: a longitudinal study

Inhalt: "It is recommended that researchers who use mixed modal methods for data collection compare their impact on outcome measures. The purpose of this study was to examine the physical activity and fruit/ vegetable consumption behaviors of a multiethnic sample of adults, comparing participants who continued a telephone survey and those who transitioned from a telephone to a web-based survey for a follow-up data collection point. This longitudinal study used a random sample of 700 Hawaii residents (63.3% Female; Mean age=47, SD=17.1). At baseline, participants completed a computer-assisted telephone interview assessing the stage, behavior, and decisional balance of both physical activity and fruit/ vegetable consumption. For the three-month follow-up survey, participants were given the option of completing the survey either on the web or by phone. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was computed for related physical activity scales and fruit/ vegetable consumption variables to compare the change in response across time between a web group and phone group. For both physical activity and fruit/ vegetable consumption, all mode-by-time interactions were significant). The participants who preferred the telephone survey maintained their levels, whereas those who preferred the web survey reported a decrease in each variable. These results suggest that changing the mode of a survey may introduce a systematic bias in data and that researchers should proceed with caution when using mixed modes of data collection." Differential response rates in postal and web-based surveys in older respondents

Inhalt: "Response rates were compared across a postal and a web-based survey containing the same questions about preferences for future for the design of future nursing homes which were sent to a random sample of 10.000 individuals aged 50-75 years. The 10.000 individuals were randomly allocated to receive a postal questionnaire or a letter with a web link to an online version of the same questionnaire. The web-based survey gave a significantly lower response rate than the postal survey. The web-based version improved the sample representativeness with respect to gender but worsened the representativeness with respect to age. Respondents' characteristics in the web-based survey differed significantly from those of respondents in the postal survey with respect to income, education, civil status and health status. The web-based version improved data quality by significantly lowering the number of item non-response and 'don't know' answers. Respondents found it easier to answer the web-based survey. The cost per response was significantly higher for the web-based survey because of the significantly lower response rate compared to the postal survey." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Football likely presents itself as a modern subsystem of society which provides 'unifying power' and values like 'fairplay, cooperation, care, sympathy, broad-mindedness and solidarity' (bundesliga-stiftung.de). In contrast it can be considered as one of the most unprogressive bastions in modern Western societies due to everyday violence, the latent racism and discrimination of women and homosexuals. This ambivalence makes football a fascinating domain of empirical social research. For that purpose our research project Fußball intersektional carried out since 2007, has focused on the interaction of different inequality structures in the football microcosm. We conducted nine group discussions where we used visual stimuli in the form of a poster instead of key questions. This article shows that in qualitative social research, the use of visual media is not only appropriate when discussing difficult and sensitive topics but also an efficient means of counteracting the problem of reification, which means the introduction of preliminary considerations and personal attitudes." Variance estimation for complex indicators of poverty and inequality using linearization techniques
Autor/in:
Osier, Guillaume
Quelle: Survey Research Methods, 3 (2009) 3, S 167-195
Inhalt: "The paper presents the Eurostat experience in calculating measures of precision, including standard errors, confidence intervals and design effect coefficients - the ratio of the variance of a statistic with the actual sample design to the variance of that statistic with a simple random sample of same size - for the 'Laeken' indicators, that is, a set of complex indicators of poverty and inequality which had been set out in the framework of the EU-SILC project (European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions). The Taylor linearization method (Tepping, 1968; Woodru, 1971; Wolter, 1985; Tillé, 2000) is actually a well-established method to obtain variance estimators for nonlinear statistics such as ratios, correlation or regression coefficients. It consists of approximating a nonlinear statistic with a linear function of the observations by using first-order Taylor Series expansions. Then, an easily found variance estimator of the linear approximation is used as an estimator of the variance of the nonlinear statistic. Although the Taylor linearization method handles all the nonlinear statistics which can be expressed as a smooth function of estimated totals, the approach fails to encompass the 'Laeken' indicators since the latter are having more complex mathematical expressions. Consequently, a generalized linearization method (Deville, 1999), which relies on the concept of influence function (Hampel, Ronchetti, Rousseeuw and Stahel, 1986), has been implemented. After presenting the EU-SILC instrument and the main target indicators for which variance estimates are needed, the paper elaborates on the main features of the linearization approach based on influence functions. Ultimately, estimated standard errors, confidence intervals and design effect coefficients obtained from this approach are presented and discussed." (author's abstract)

Who had an occupation? Changing boundaries in historical U.S. census data
Autor/in:
Meyer, Peter B.
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 34 (2009) 3, S 149-167
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The original official purpose of the U.S. Census was to gather information to design political districts of approximately the same size. Increasingly Census data has been used for descriptive and social scientific purposes. This paper examines how the category of 'occupation' has changed and looks at several issues which arise in comparing the present day workforce with the workforce in past decades. Changes in concepts, practices, and historical context have greatly affected how many persons were recorded as having occupations, especially for married women, American Indians, teenagers, and people who have ceased paid work.' A simultaneous approach to the estimation of risk aversion and the subjective time discount rate
Autor/in:
Booij, Adam S.; Praag, Bernard M.S. van
Quelle: Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 70 (2009) 1-2, S 374-388
Inhalt: "In this paper we analyze a sample of 1,832 individuals who responded to six randomly generated lottery questions that differ with respect to chance, prize and the timing of the draw. Using a model that explicitly allows for consumption smoothing, we obtain an estimate of relative risk aversion of 82. Instead, assuming consumption to be immediate gives an estimate of 2, close to what is traditionally reported, while a model of full asset integration gives estimates higher by several orders of magnitude. Our results show that estimated risk aversion is sensitive to the assumptions made with respect to the consumption profile and that it is possible to determine the level of asset integration endogenously. The average subjective time discount rate, which includes a preference for the present, equals 6% per month. It is found that both parameters vary strongly over individuals and that the variation can be explained by income, age, gender, and entrepreneurship, consistent with the majority of previous evidence."
Titelübersetzung:Talks of desire: sex/ gender related articulations in interviews with heterosexual male clients of female sex workers
Autor/in:
Grenz, Sabine
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article is concerned with the following question: How does the sex/ gender of a researcher influence the behaviour of hetero-sexual clients of prostitutes participating in interviews? In other words: How do interviewees make use of heteronormative imaginations of sex/gender and, thus, establish masculinity through the structure of their story? In this article the author undertakes an experiment by comparing my own research results (Grenz 2007) with results published by another researcher (Gerheim 2007). In this comparison, one can see that interviewees structure their story of commercial sexuality according to the imaginations of the complementary male and female sexualities. As a consequence, the interviewee integrates the interviewer differently according to heteronormative assumptions of sexuality. While a male interviewer is integrated according to assumptions of sameness, a female interviewer is integrated on the basis of difference." (author's abstract)

Cottier, Michelle; Wrase, Michael
