[Autorenreferat]
Inhalt: "The life courses and employment histories of East Germans have changed since the fall of the Wall
in 1989. Summarizing the research findings in four theses, the authors show that the degree of stability and discontinuity in the life courses of East Germans varies between birth cohorts, gender, and the overt political loyalty to the GDR. Among other things, we see that loyalty to the GDR did not increase the risks of unemployment or downward mobility after 1989, because the majority of the former members of the upper service class hold university degrees."

Inhalt: Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of primary family caregivers in comparison to the reference values of the average population. Subjects and methods: Data collection took place in the Werra-Meißner district in 2009 with a response rate of 102 primary family caregivers of frail elderly people. The health-related quality of life was measured with the Short Form 36 health survey (SF 36) and compared with the German reference values. Results: Compared to the health values of the normative sample, primary caregivers show significantly lower rates in all dimensions of health-related quality of life. In particular, caregivers between the ages of 53 to 61 report extremely low health values. Caregiving women compared to non-caregiving women have highly significant differences in all subscales of the SF 36. Caregiving men also report highly significant differences to non-caregiving men in all dimensions of the SF 36 except for Physical Functioning and General Health (p < 0.01). Caregivers in general and especially caregiving women aged 53 to 61 (midlife) were identified as at-risk groups for poor health. The latter report lower vitality and well-being, which may be a consequence of both social isolation and social impacts from multiple role demands. Conclusion: The identified high-risk groups of family caregivers, caregivers in midlife and especially caregiving women in midlife, should be supported by social measures, e.g., training courses for family caregivers, particularly in their home setting, and various types of respite care in order to sustain their health.

Geschlecht - die überschätzte Dimension sozialer Ungleichheit: zentrale Herausforderungen liegen anderswo
Titelübersetzung:Gender - the overestimated dimension of social inequality: main challenges lie elsewhere

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Industrial societies were predominantly male societies which blocked women from access to privileged positions. Present-day post-industrial service economies increasingly become female societies in which gender-specific inequalities lose salience, having undergone more profound changes since the 1960s than in the hundred previous years. Contemporary policy discourses do not yet adequately reflect this silent revolution and should focus more on two central challenges to social integration, i.e. class-related inequalities and the integration of immigrant children into our systems of higher learning."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Despite great progress, there still remains a gap between the sexes regarding the opportunities in one's lifetime. Employment rates for women have increased but huge gender differences remain: within the same profession women are often positioned lower than men in the hierarchy, women take breaks from working more often and for longer periods of time and work part-time more often than their male colleagues. It is not a question of freedom of choice for women since existing structures still do not give them a real choice - for women, full-time employment and having children are often an either/ or situation." Gendering insiders and outsiders: labour market status and preferences for job security
Autor/in:
Emmenegger, Patrick
Quelle: University of Edinburgh, Publication and Dissemination Centre (PUDISCwowe); Edinburgh (Working Papers on the Reconciliation of Work and Welfare in Europe, REC-WP 02/2010), 2010. 36 S
Inhalt: This paper examines the role of gender in the relationship between labour market status and preferences for job security. We hypothesize that the insider/ outsider theory of employment and unemployment suffers from a gender bias. It neither takes the possibility of family-related labour market transitions nor the role of the household situation (division of labour, presence of children, dual-earner households etc.) into account. We adapt the insider/ outsider theory of employment and unemployment by incorporating the, on average, higher number of labour market transitions experienced by women into the model using interaction effects and by conceptualising the household situation as mobility and responsibility effects. Contrary to our expectations, we find no significant effect of gender on preferences for job security, neither in interaction with labour market status nor as an independent effect. In contrast, we observe that individuals living together with their partners and main contributors to the household income consider job security to be particularly important.
