Within the Spanish Presidency of the European Council of the EU, the Spanish Ministry of Universities is organizing the conference on “Ending gender-based violence in academia”, October 23-24 in Bilbao. The conference will draw on results from the EU project UniSAFE.
The CEWS researchers Dr. Anke Lipinsky und Claudia Schredl have been invited to speak in two sessions:
Monday, October 23, 2023, 3 pm: Session 1 “How gender-based violence affects people and universities” with a presentation by Anke Lipinsky: “Evidence on the size, scope, and consequences of gender-based violence in universities and research organisations”
The first thematic session of the conference focusses on the research findings of the UniSAFE project on the size and scope of the problem of staff and students experiencing gender-based violence in universities and research organizations. It will highlight prevalence and consequences, as well as the reasons for limited disclosure of incidents of gender-based violence and how this effects personal and professional lives.

Monday, October 23, 2023, 5.15 pm: Session 2 “How universities and research centres respond to gender-based violence”, with a presentation by Claudia Schredl: “Survey results on institutional responses”
The second UniSAFE thematic session of the conference focusses on the research findings of the UniSAFE project on institutional responses to gender-based violence, including sexual and sexist harassment in universities and research centres. It will present the mapping done by UniSAFE of the legal and policy frameworks in 27 EU Members States and 3 associated countries at the macro level, and the strategic mapping of the institutional responses at the 45 universities and research centres that have been part of the UniSAFE sample in 15 countries.

The conference is designed to be a continuation of the one held in Prague in November 2022 within the Czech presidency which launched the Call for action. It aims to draw the attention of the multiple forms of gender-based violence that take place in academia, understanding the phenomenon, the scope of the problem and its causes, determinants, and consequences, as well as showing solutions and institutional responses, its limitations and potentialities, and presenting recommendations to tackle the problem.
The main target audience are higher education institutions, research organizations, and university organizations, including rectors’ conferences.
