INstitutional Transformation for Effecting Gender Equality in Research

Project duration: 01.03.2011 - 30.06.2015

Principal investigator: Dr. Anke Lipinsky

Project team: Dr. Andrea Löther; Maria Schäfer; Gesine Ahlzweig; Verena Eickhoff

The goal of the INTEGER project was to advance gender equality in higher education and research institutions and improve the career progression of women researchers through sustainable institutional transformation. The consortium was comprised of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in France, Šiauliai University in Lithuania and Trinity College Dublin in Ireland.  The Center of Excellence Women and Science (CEWS) at GESIS brought its substantial experience in the evaluation of gender equality measures to bear in acting as external evaluator of the actions for transformational change.
Over the course of four years GESIS’ three partners developed and implemented tailor-made Transformational Gender Action Plans (TGAPs) for two local units and the organization as a whole, taking into account the specific local, institutional and national circumstances. The measures targeted four levels: Engagement of decision-makers, organizational structure, career progression and work life balance.
INTEGER followed a well thought-out management approach involving institutional and local management teams, senior management, a partnership group and an external group of experts. Regular meetings and reporting fostered direct and productive communication and cooperation between the different institutional levels, ensured the partners’ commitment to INTEGER's objectives and guaranteed an outstanding implementation of the TGAPs. Exchange of experience, mutual learning and capacity-building was advanced by seminars, close collaboration of the partners and the formative and summative evaluation carried out by GESIS/CEWS.
Based on the INTEGER experience the INTEGER consortium developed a toolbox that provides guidelines, tools and good practice examples for setting up, implementing and evaluating institutional transformation towards gender equality in higher education and research institutions.
