Funding for Leibniz Labs - GESIS involved in two Leibniz Labs

Categories: GESIS-News

From a total of five applications submitted, the Leibniz Senate has decided to establish three Leibniz Labs for the first time from April 2024. GESIS is involved in the two labs "Systemic Sustainability" and "Upheavals and Transformations". The aim of the Leibniz Labs is to make the best possible use of the Leibniz Association's interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary experience, expertise and potential in order to make a strong contribution to solving pressing social issues. Leibniz Labs primarily rely on the integration of the diverse existing knowledge of all Leibniz institutions. Leibniz Labs cross disciplinary boundaries and incorporate knowledge and perspectives from politics, business and society to develop products that support stakeholders in solving problems.

The following Leibniz Labs will be funded for a total of three million euros each over a period of three years from April 1, 2024:

  • Systemische Nachhaltigkeit (Systemic Sustainability) – Biodiversität, Klima, Landwirtschaft und Ernährung innerhalb planetarer Grenzen“ (with GESIS participation)

The rapid loss of biodiversity and ongoing climate change are also the result of intensive agriculture. At the same time, they jeopardize agriculture and food security. The Leibniz Lab "Systemic Sustainability" brings together relevant knowledge in science and society on this fundamental challenge in order to promote the development and implementation of systemic solutions. By pooling the expertise of 41 research institutions and 11 research clusters of the Leibniz Association, a central knowledge and consulting hub on issues of biodiversity, climate, agriculture and nutrition is being created.

The world is currently changing rapidly due to numerous overlapping crises. The Leibniz Lab "Upheavals and Transformations" shows how politics and society have reacted to fundamental challenges in the recent past. In this way, the Lab generates knowledge for action in the future. It pools the expertise of 28 Leibniz institutions.
