There have been lots of discussions about the impact of online intermediaries such as Facebook, Google, etc. on democracy. With novel measurements combining web browsing histories and surveys of study participants in six countries, the article contributes to these debates by showing that intermediaries are important gateways to news. Across several analyses, daily use of intermediaries increases political and non-political news use as well as the diversity of news sources. The findings provide important empirical insights into the functioning of high-choice digital media environments in modern democracies.
