   The "Chancengleich!" portal at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is a central, comprehensive source of information about equal opportunity activities at RUB. It presents different levels and aspects of equal opportunity under a number of headings: Equal Opportunity in Focus, Implementing Equal Opportunity, Women in Science, Service and Equal Opportunity Office.

   As well as information about the organisation and structure of equal opportunity activities at the university and key resources such as reports and equal opportunity concepts, there is also practical advice on implementing equal opportunity for students and researchers, at the workplace or with the family and as to what measures are offered in the different areas by the university. There are also 15 personal profiles of women professors. Their different career paths and the professional opportunities in the world of research are intended to both motivate and inspire female students.

2. "Die Humbolde" Daycare Centre  ?

   Description of the measure

   "Die Humbolde" is a daycare centre run by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) for the children of students on the Mitte campus, offering an extra childcare option in addition to municipal daycare centres. Up to 15 children aged 1 to nursery school age are looked after by four childcare workers who are themselves students (two women and two men). The daycare centre was set up in 1995 on the initiative of students with children to enable them to attend lectures, language classes, etc., outside normal daycare hours. It is open during class hours, from Monday to Friday, 9am - 8:30pm. Childcare costs are ?5 for one session or ?10 per month plus ?1.50 for dinner or lunch.

   The long opening hours and flexible service enables as many parents as possible to use the facility. The children's project and the daycare centre are administered by the ReferentInnenRat, the student representative body at HU Berlin. The children's project is funded almost exclusively by HU Berlin with small parental contributions.

   Universität Hamburg helps its staff balance work and family by fostering continued workplace ties ("loyalty management") when they take leave after the birth of a child, in order to provide nursing care, or for other family reasons.

   Loyalty management includes:

   • actively nurturing strong ties to the University
   • carefully planning their return.

   Description of the measure

   The peer mentoring programme "Einblick!" at the University of Paderborn gives female students who are about to complete their studies and are interested in doing a doctorate the opportunity, over a period of five months, to meet other women in the same situation to talk about becoming a doctoral researcher and prepare for moving to this level. They are mentored by a female doctoral researcher who provides information about support for early career researchers and shares tips and strategies from her own experience. The peer mentoring programme is structured as follows:

   1. Small group meetings with female doctoral researcher as mentor:

   Groups of four to six students meet on a regular basis to discuss topics agreed at the start of the programme with their mentor. The group members themselves decide how frequent the meetings should be and what format they take.

   2. Opportunity to meet women in research, industry and public life who have received their doctorates:

   During the programme, students have regular opportunities to meet women with doctoral degrees and learn about their individual career paths and areas of work in the form of panel discussions on specific issues or smaller group meetings.

   3. Workshops:

   The peer mentoring programme begins with a 1.5-day workshop in which participants can get to know each other, laying the foundations for working together in small groups. In addition to this foundation workshop, which gives participants an important opportunity for reflection, they are made aware of offerings of other universities and a short workshop on choosing a topic is also organised in partnership with the academic writing support unit (Kompetenzzentrum Schreiben).

   4. Framework programme:

   The framework programme, which includes a kick-off event and final event, supports the participants' development during the peer mentoring programme and encourages communication within the entire group. At the final event the mentees' personal decisions are discussed and strategies are developed as to how the network and/or contact with the university can be maintained.

   Since 2006, the Senate Equal Opportunity Commission and the rector's office have awarded the title of "Family-Friendly Institution at the University of Greifswald". This award goes to institutes, departments, research projects, etc. which actively work to help people balance career or studies and family responsibilities, which promote an open, family-friendly atmosphere, and which design concepts to further improve family-friendliness. Staff and students of the university can nominate institutions and rate various aspects of family-friendliness at the institution in question in an anonymous online survey.

   The coordinating post of Gender Equality in STEM at Saarland University was set up in response to the fact that there is still too little interest among women in studying STEM subjects. This post liaises between the Equal Opportunity Office and a cluster of excellence in computer science and is the point of contact for all gender equality issues relating to STEM. The coordinator will analyse why women are still under-represented in these disciplines as students, doctoral researchers and professors. Using the most up-to-date data available, proposals will be developed to improve the situation. Another task of this role is to make young women aware of the advantages of studying these subjects and of the location of Saarland University.

   The project "I Will Be a Professor! - Girls' Introduction to An Academic Career Path" at Bergische Universität Wuppertal offers two-week practical placements at the university for exceptionally talented, high-performing and motivated girls in senior years of secondary school. This measure is designed to provide career orientation, raise awareness of the job of university professor as an attractive career option and present this choice as an attainable career goal.

   The university offers girls a first encounter with an unusual career choice, an insight into research and teaching in different fields, the chance to sit in on lectures, seminars, practical exercises, experiments, excursions, etc., direct contact with professors (both women and men), the opportunity to talk to university staff and students, qualified advice on courses of study and career paths, important information about a job profile and goal-oriented future planning.

   Practical experience places are directly attached to the chairs of professors in various departments, with a focus on science and engineering subjects. The requirements for participation are a strong interest in the academic profession and preferably also an interest in the natural sciences and engineering. Placements are only available during class hours. Placements last for one to three weeks.

   To help them prepare for a placement, the selected participants are given an orientation guide and form for their school. On the first day of the placement they are welcomed by the project team and introduced to the topic. They receive a folder containing relevant information about the university, studying and academic careers. In the final week of the placement there is a final get-together where participants can discuss their experiences. For quality assurance purposes, a short written feedback survey is carried out.

   Applications must be sent to the Equal Opportunity Officer at least six weeks before the preferred start of the placement.
