Leuphana University of Lüneburg has created a portal on its website called “Infoportal: Against sexual harassment”, designed by the university's Equal Opportunities Office. It provides information for people affected by sexual discrimination and violence and for their supporters. The portal has been available in two languages since April 2020 (German/English: “Sexual Harassment: Information and Support”). It features an accessible design and is also available to the general public.

Examples of content include an information video, an interactive exercise and self-assessment quizzes to test your knowledge and evaluation of certain situations. It also provides information on what actually constitutes sexual discrimination and violence, the possible actions available to those affected and how to support individuals facing this situation. Another key area is the compilation of resource lists for teaching staff and other managerial positions, including links to websites and documents at other institutions.

The cross-faculty “Agathe Lasch Coaching plus various” at the University of Hamburg provides an opportunity to reflect on issues in everyday working life and career positioning through one-to-one coaching. The programme is aimed at female junior professors, postdoctoral researchers and those in the habilitation phase as well as persons in these categories of either gender with a longer-term physical or mental impairment or illness, or a disability.

Solution-oriented advice is tailored towards individual needs, goals and interests and guarantees a protected and discreet framework through cooperation with external coaches.

Topics covered might include experience with the individual's own leadership skills in day-to-day research, coping with barriers and stereotypes, and issues relating to career planning and work-life balance.

Coachees can benefit from a maximum of 5 free individual coaching sessions per year, each lasting 60 minutes. Coaches are selected by the University of Hamburg. Networking events with input are also offered.

For coachees who are not German speakers, coaching can be offered in English.

Support is primarily offered to doctoral researchers, postdoctoral researchers, staff preparing for habilitation and junior professors who are single parents, on parental leave, on partial parental leave or responsible for at least half of the care of their children.

Applicants may request an allowance of up to €250 per child for actual travel expenses for conferences or childcare costs if travelling with children and, if applicable, a partner or babysitter to look after the children, or if the conference attendee’s absence results in additional childcare costs at home. Evidence must be provided of the necessity to take the children on the trip.

For female early career researchers and for male early career researchers who are single parents or on parental leave, who have a leadership role (e.g. postdocs with an independent junior research group, fellows in a Zukunftskolleg or habilitated scholars), special funding is available for research visits (such as scientific retreats, mentorships and cooperation meetings) and international conferences lasting more than one week (at least five working days). With the support of the relevant institution (a copy of the approved funding proposal for the trip), individuals can apply for larger allowances for air fares, rent etc. For trips lasting more than four weeks, allowances are also available for other expenses such as school costs. The amount of the allowance is decided on a case-by-case basis by the Equal Opportunity Council.

The BWLternzeitmodell parental leave model is based on a faculty-level parental leave pool which allows the faculty to respond flexibly to parental leave taken by research employees while also offering attractive positions to parental leave replacements. When research employees (according to § 28 paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG)) take parental leave, a position corresponding to the previous employment percentage is created in the parental leave pool. The roles of research employees who take parental leave are transferred here until a suitable research position becomes available from state funding for the previous professorship. The role of supervisor (in a management and academic sense) remains with the professorship.

Transfer to the parental leave pool frees up capacity at the level of the professorship. The replacement can therefore be offered the same employment percentage and a contract period according to the Code of Conduct “Prekäre Beschäftigungsverhältnisse in der Wissenschaft” (precarious employment relationships in research), thus avoiding staff shortages for the professorship. Applications must be submitted to make use of the BWLternzeitmodell parental leave model and a maximum of one position for each professorship can be substituted or replaced through the model.
